Arc 7, Chapter 25

The Gods

Coatl strode across the stone walkway, the soft rocks sending crackles of energy into his bare feet. A massive marble gazebo sat before him, and familiar faces stood at each pillar. Coatl grinned. He hadn't been to divine meeting in years.

A slender, waifish woman with dark skin and lavender hair met eyes with him- Titania, the fae goddess. Beside her, the demon god, Leviathan, had his arms behind his back, sickly pale flesh rippled with scars and muscle. Celeste met him with crossed arms, glowing eyes narrowed by her brow.

“I see you have returned, Coatl,” Titania observed, smiling.

Leviathan nodded. “It's good to see you back.”

“And it's nice to be back,” Coatl said cheerfully, waving his hand, “Of course, I would have liked a little help after those guys preformed a coup. That would have been nice.”

Celeste ignored his statement. “Coatl, have you felt the disturbances?”

Coatl’s expression grew dark. “I would have to be an idiot not to.”

Titania sighed, staring solemnly at the ground. “It's only gotten worse over the centuries.”

“Celeste, I believe you mentioned some kind of project one of your sisters cooked up? About restoring the balance? Did I miss that?”

Leviathan snorted, his harsh gaze falling on Celeste. Titania shook her head sadly.

Celeste looked sickened, cheeks hot. “It...It was a total failure.”

Coatl shifted his weight. “Well, I must have missed a fun meeting. Watching you eat your words must have been great,” he said playfully.

Coatl paused, his jovial air fading. “Did my absence cause the disharmony?”

Celeste grit her teeth. “Don't be so vain, Coatl. The universe has been heading for a slow death ever since…” she trailed off, turning her head to the largest pillar of the temple.

Carved into the stone were dragons, coiled around each other in three tiers. On the bottom tier, two dragons sat on a sundial, surrounded by stars. Above them, two more dragons sat on a scale, in perfect balance.

At the top of the pillar, the largest of the dragons stood back to back. The red-eyed beast was in pristine condition, but its companion was in shambles. Massive claw marks tore through the stone carving, the blue gem marking its eyes cracked.
