Arc 10, Chapter 6
The Objective
A wave of shock rippled through the team. Umbra narrowed his eyes, a bead of sweat on his brow. “Murdered?”
Infinity rubbed his temples, leaning forward. A desk drawer was tugged open by the pale aura of his telekinesis, a tablet computer dropping into his palm. A map was displayed on the screen, showing a desolate, mostly white-colored area. “His name was Arktos Elias. He was the leader of a guild called Raging Hail, centered in Alaska. Officially, he's considered a missing person...but by now, we believe it's just a matter of recovering his body and finding a suspect.”
Aunora squinted at the screen, tapping a small grey dot. “Is that it? I've never heard of Raging Hail.”
“I would be surprised if you had. It's not nearly as publicized as Alcorith Horizons is. Raging Hail is a small but vital research base in the Arctic Circle. Before Arktos’s disappearance, it had only three registered members. It's mainly used for gathering and processing scientific data. If Arktos was killed to get access to his research, this could be detrimental.”
Infinity placed the tablet on his desk, watching Victor with severe eyes. “If the boy can contact Arktos’s soul, we can confirm his death and find the circumstance surrounding it.”
Victor’s fingers snaked into Umbra’s lap, clenching his hand for support. Umbra pulled him closer.
Infinity’s voice lost its stern baritone. “Look, I know this is sudden, but I really need you to do this. Arktos was a close friend of mine. We worked together for years. I just...I just want to get him justice.”
There was a pregnant pause before Umbra spoke. “I'm afraid I'm going to have to sit out through this mission, Infinity. I'm a jungle fae- weather that cold will kill me, and I don't trust my luck if something goes wrong.”
“And-" Esper suddenly blurted, cheeks dark turquoise, “And, uh, Mr. Umbra, can I not go either, if that's okay? I'm not sure if I'm ready for another mission.”
Aunora grimaced, shrugging at Infinity. “Looks like we're three down. I don't think we can handle this. We're good, but not that good.”
“Actually,” Matthew interrupted, lifting his head, “Consider us only two down. I'm going.”
“Matt?” Umbra barked in confusion, “Are you serious?”
“Of course I'm serious,” he said, rubbing the stubble on his chin, “The team needs another combatant, and I don't want to leave Aunora alone, since she will be heading the mission.”
Aunora flinched. “I will?”
“I don't think I'm capable of it right now. Isn't that the order Umbra established? If both Umbra and I are out of commission, Aunora takes over?”
Umbra was frantically gesturing with his hands, exchanging glances with Aunora. “In my defense, I never thought it would happen!”
“I see no reason why Aunora can't be the leader. I trust her.”
“I don't trust me!”
Curt, Infinity cleared his throat, silencing them like children. “Due to the sensitive nature of this mission, I will be coming with you. We will be meeting with our clients as soon as possible. Report to the roof of this building at five o’clock sharp.”
