Arc 10, Chapter 10

The Investigators

“Welcome to Raging Hail,” a woman murmured, extending a hand, “My name is Sedna. I have been watching over the guild in Arktos’s absence.”

Sedna was short but built around the torso, obviously fit under the thick coat she wore. Her eyes were grey and piercing, burning against her dull blue skin tone. Curly, dark hair was collected in a tight bun on the top of her head. Aunora knew enough about spirits to immediately clock her as a water spirit.

Aunora narrowed her eyes, shaking the woman’s hand with calloused hands. Sedna watched with her chin tilted up, a subtle show of a pompous nature that Aunora hated.

There was a young boy at Sedna’s side, standing silent and sullen, the sleeves of his parka limp, as if they were empty.

“Selkie is Arktos’s ward. He cannot see or speak.” Sedna wrinkled her nose, “And yes, he has no arms either. There is no reason to stare.”

Aunora shamefully averted her eyes.

Infinity adjusted his glasses, cocking his head at the other woman standing behind Sedna. “I didn't know you had gotten another member.”

The woman smiled, taking a step forward. She was slim and almost dainty, a stark white coat blending into the snowy landscape around her. Her hair was pale and loose at her shoulders, framing her heart-shaped face and delicate features.

“Ah, I'm not affiliated with Raging Hail. I'm simply a private mercenary that was hired to work on the case. You can call me Lilith.”

Victor tugged at his collar, clutching at Matthew’s coat as a wave of nausea suddenly washed over him. Lilith’s eyes were bright pink, holding Victor’s own gaze in a toxic stand-still. Matthew was motionless, barely acknowledging Victor’s presence.

“Oh! There you are!” a voice cried out, the door of the guild being thrown open. A man rushed out, wrapping a scarf around his neck. He grabbed Lilith by the waist, pulling her hip to his and grinning. “Sorry I was late, baby!”

Lilith scowled, reacting with a startled sneer. Sedna raised her eyebrows. “Wait...who were you again?”

He winked, almost looking at Victor directly.  He was taller than Lilith, with dark skin and lazily cut facial hair. “Name’s John. John Titor. Lilith and I are private investigators, of course. We're in love.”

John pressed his lips to Lilith’s, holding her close as he planted a passionate kiss. Lilith shoved him off, rolling her eyes.

Sedna sighed. “Follow me inside. I will show you your quarters.”

Inside, Raging Hail was less modern and inviting than Alcorith Horizons, with low ceilings and steel plates lining the walls. There was little to nothing beyond the bare necessities- a table and a few chairs, a few photos of various mercenaries, and a rack that contained various pieces of equipment.

Sedna placed her coat on the rack, Silver Moon, Infinity, John, and Lilith falling into line behind her. She jerked her thumb towards a hallway in front of her.

“Mr. Infinity, you and your team will be sleeping in the barracks to your left. Lilith, John, to the right. Showers are at the end of the hall.”

Sedna pressed her hands together. “Now...who is the necromancer of the group?”

“That will be Victor,” Seraph said, taking Victor by the hand and pulling him forward. Victor kept his head down, lip trembling.

“I will need you to begin the séance immediately.”
