The next morning was bright and chaotic, with halls being filled with children trying to get to their classes after breakfast. Ron and Harry looked over at (y/n) who stood next to them as they avoided the mass scurry, the boys laughing at the new first years while the girl just stayed quiet. She had her walkman in, drowning out the noise and reverting back to her quiet days back in year one.
Harry and Ron get told off by McGonagall, sending them to potions and Harry grabs (y/n)'s arm to take her with them. He looked at how exhausted she looked, wondering if she got any sleep in her dorm but it was obvious she didn't. The whole night she was deciding whether or not to visit Draco, to try and speak to him and ask him what has been happening to him but she was too indecisive. Her mind tormented her the entire night as she leaned over her bed and stared at the ground that separated her from her love, making her skip breakfast.
"You can let me go. I'm not a child." (y/n) snaps, ripping her arm away from Harry as they stopped in front of the potions class.
"(y/n)-fine..." Harry sighs in defeat, walking into the class with Ron first.
The Hufflepuff soon follows in with them, Slughorn telling the three students off. "Harry my boy! I was beginning to worry! And I see we've brought some friends with us..."
"Ron Weasley Sir." Ron introduces himself, explaining how he was rubbish at potions and tried to get out of the class but Harry and Slughorn stop him from leaving.
Draco wasn't paying attention to the class, looking up through the window high up as he watched the clouds when his mind reels from the familiar floral scent that haunted him.
"(y/f/n) sir..." (y/n) whispers in embarrassment as she introduced herself next and the Slytherin quickly looks over at his love. It was the first year all over again, her quiet demeanour taking over her confidence as she held her books tightly to her chest. He saw the bags beneath her eyes and he grew worried, remembering that he didn't see her at breakfast.
Hermione looked over and saw the immediate love in Draco's eyes as his gaze followed (y/n) silently, never taking his eyes off her as Slughorn tells the students to get their books and stand with the rest of the students. His breath hitches as she stands next to him, in the middle with Hermione on her other side. He expected her to look up at him but she never gave him a glance and his heart wrenched at the fact that she was ignoring him now.
I guess I deserve it then...
"I didn't see you at breakfast. What happened?" Hermione asks her friend who shrugs.
"Overslept." the Slytherin and the Gryffindor both knew that was a fucking lie.
"Now, as I was saying, I've prepared a few concoctions this morning. Any ideas what these might be?" Hermione raises her arm quickly to answer. "Yes, Miss...?"
"Granger, sir." she was up to the cauldrons to answer what was in each of them. "That one there is Veritaserum. It's a truth-telling serum. And that would be Polyjuice Potion. It's terribly tricky to make. And-"
"-well done Miss Granger. How about we let another student answer." Hermione nods stiffly, stepping back as Slughorn looks at his students. "Anyone?" he looks over at a certain Hufflepuff and Slytherin who stood away from each other, picking on them next. "You two, come on over please." Draco and (y/n) both pale, looking at the professor before walking over towards him. "What do you think is in that last cauldron?"
"Amortentia sir. The most powerful love potion in the world." Draco answers softly. "It's rumoured to smell differently to each person, according to what attracts them."
"Good Mr Malfoy. What do you smell (l/n)?" (y/n) freezes on the spot from the question but leans in close to the cauldron, hit with the smell that was so familiar to her and made her feel at home.
"Crisp green apples..." (y/n) hums sweetly and Draco looks at her in surprise. "I smell... expensive cologne... parchment and metal..." she looks up at her love and he stares down at her with adoration.
"And you Mr Malfoy?"
"Honey... and flowers..." the Slytherin answers, leaning closer to the Hufflepuff as she draws him in. "Firewood like the warmth of home and green tea..." he whispers lovingly, eyes soft as he was stuck in a trance of his Puff.
She's so beautiful...
The two suddenly break away when the strong smell fades away, Slughorn putting a lid on the cauldron. "Correct students!" Draco and (y/n) step away from each other quickly with bright cheeks, still being able to smell the scent of the other even as they move away to join the rest of the students. "Now Amortentia doesn't create actual love, of course. That's impossible. But it does cause a powerful infatuation or obsession. For that reason, it is probably the most dangerous potion in this room."
The Hufflepuff and Slytherin listen to the rest of the lesson, Slughorn proposing a vial of liquid luck to the student who perfects a batch of Draught of the Living Death. This creates a buzz amongst the students, even Draco who perks up at the notion of hearing that all his endeavours might succeed if he won that vial. Slughorn sends the students off to race to brew the potion, (y/n) not interested in making the potion but simply watched Harry make it. She saw the notes in his ratty old textbook that he found in the cupboard, making the perfect potion while everyone else struggled.
The Half-Blood prince? Who's that?
In the end, it was Harry who had won the vial, everyone clapping enthusiastically. The Hufflepuff looked over at a certain Slytherin, seeing the angry scowl on his face like he needed that vial desperately. The class ends and she waits for everyone to leave first so she could speak to him but he was amongst them to leave quickly.
(y/n) quickly packs up her stuff, blinking at the pear that sat calmly on her desk and she picks it up with a small smile before running out of the classroom. "Draco!" she calls out, trying to get to him, trying to get him to talk to her.
Draco hesitates for a second, his heart screaming at him to turn around but he continues walking, leaving her behind.

"Is he still ignoring you?" Hermione and Ginny ask (y/n) as the girls sat together in the Great Hall having dinner.
"Yeah. It's been like this for weeks!" the Hufflepuff sulks, looking over at the Slytherin table to see him missing again. "I'm just worried for him." She had noticed him slowly start to put distance even from his friends, not interacting with them or talking to them. He wasn't seen with them often like he used to and even now, he started skipping meals.
"But he still cares." Ginny says and (y/n) knows that too. She knows it was Draco leaving her a pear every day when she misses breakfast, knows that it was him when he leaves a cup of tea for her in the kitchen those long nights she was awake.
"I just want to talk to him. To ask him what happened. He looks scared for his life... His smile is gone... Something bad happened, I know it..." the Hufflepuff wished the Slytherin would answer her letter, one she had dropped into his room nights ago asking if he needed help. The girls try to console their friend, taking her mind off things not realising that the boy they were talking about was skulking around the entrance of the Great Hall.
Draco sighs as he takes one last glance at (y/n), deciding to go to his bedroom to wait out the rest of the students until it was time for him to sneak out again. He sat down on his bed, looking over at the letter his Puff had left on his pillow.
Draco, I don't know what happened for all of this to happen but please, please don't go through it alone.
If there's something going on, something bad, let me help you.
I'm worried for you... I miss you.
You can always come to me if you need someone. You're not alone... you don't have to go through this alone...
So please, please talk to me. I just want to help.
~Puff
"I'm sorry (y/n)..." Draco tears up, a drop ruining the parchment as ink melds into the paper and he tries to fix it but gives up, setting the paper away. He couldn't let her near him again, couldn't risk her being targeted.
If they knew, if they used her against him...
The boy wiped his tears away, remembering his promise to protect the one that held his heart. He had to do this, for her, to keep her safe. He couldn't let her help a monster like him, he wouldn't dare tarnish her like that. She was his angel, an angel he had to give up
"I miss you too..." Draco whispers, clawing at his left arm with a sob.
