“You'll be the Prince and I'll be the Princess, it's a love story, baby just say yes.”

I sat in front of the mirror looking at my hair extensions at the moment and how stupid they looked on me. I was wearing one of those tight gowns and it felt like it was suffocating me. This wasn't me. I looked like an absolute clown. I was wearing a pearl white gown with my veil set on my head. My mother forced me to put on the hair extensions so that I "do not look like a jokster" and it was driving me insane. I felt really hot. How can girls even manage with long hair during the summers?
"Y/N! You ready?" My sister chimed in through the door. She was wearing a beautiful yellow dress with a golden broach and was one of my bridesmaids. She was older to me by 4 years and was already married. It was my turn to get married today. "I don't know... I feel so nervous... Prince Jeno looks just so intimidating..." I confess honestly and fiddle with my fingers.
She was about to say something when my mother walks in through the door and cuts in. "Y/N stop chickening out and being a failure like you've always been in your life. Look elegant and graceful okay? Prince Jeno needs to see your best behaviour, understood?" she said sternly making me frown and bite my lip. "But mother–" "No buts! Do you know you're so lucky that he is marrying you?? Thank god his mother and I are good friends that this is possible!" she said as a matter of a fact-ly.
"I don't even know him... I have just seen him for like... Two days?" I mutter to myself and clutch in to my gown tightly. I felt extremely nervous about this. The two days we met weren't pleasant at all. He stayed so calm and silent everytime and observed me like a demon, as if he could kill me with his stares. I could totally understand he doesn't like me at all.
"Only if you had long hair, and took better skin care you would've been beautiful..." my sister mumbled to me as she took my hand leading me out. "Excuse me?" I ask obviously getting offended. I was very happy the way I am. "Nothing Y/N. Oh! Look! Prince Jeno looks so charming!" she commented and I looked forward to see him standing by the priest in his white robes looking so breathtaking. I swear I forgot to breathe in that one moment and blushed really hard.
My dad took my arm and we walked quietly down the aisle. "Y/N, my girl, don't let them complain okay?" he whispered to me making me even more nervous. Why were my parents being like this? It was like they were pressuring me so much. And I know, if I say no to this, they will hate me forever. They just want to get rid of a tomboy like me. Like I don't matter to them.
When I stood opposite to him, we made eye contact as the priest started reading the scriptures and vows. He didn't even smile. He stood there like a robot and I averted my eyes. "Do you take Prince Jeno as your lawfully wedded husband?" the priest asked patiently. I took a deep breath and looked into his empty eyes. I have to do this. At least, I can do something to make my parents feel proud of me. "Y-Yes I do." I answer stumbling on my words a bit. The priest then turned to Jeno and asked him the same question for me. He clenched his jaws and his grip on my hands grew tighter at that moment, as if he was so reluctant to do this, but he ended up saying yes.
"You may kiss the bride." the priest said and I could feel my heart beating at full speed. This was gonna be my first kiss and that too in public. I was feeling extremely shy about this. But Jeno on the other hand was the same – expressionless. He quickly pecked my cheek and pulled away. I could even hear some "awws" of disappointment from the crowd. Does he not even like me a bit?
"Look Y/N, I don't care what you think about me but I don't think I can ever love you." and that sentence broke my heart to pieces. "I was forced to marry you because of my parents. Otherwise, I wouldn't have ever agreed to marry someone like you." he said with a sarcastic snicker as I tried hard to hold back my tears. "Why Jeno?" I dared to ask him. Well, it was the most stupid question ever.
"Oh! Don't you know? Isn't it obvious enough? Like look at you! Short hair, and no elegance. You have zero good in you." he shot at me which felt like piercing my heart a dozen times. I was speechless. I did not know how to react to that. So my husband even feels like I'm a piece of shit.
It has been 3 months to that day. We have been married for already 3 months now and still act like strangers. We never face each other while sleeping and make sure to have a proper divider between us. As much as I hate to admit it, I had started to fall in love with him. Of course it was probably not the same for him. I admired him when he used to practice his skills like swords and archery. I remember he was even amused himself to see me doing archery and horse riding which a normal Princess would never do. It's true, I couldn't cook that well, so the cooks did that work generally, but lately, Jeno hasn't been as rude to me as before.
I had never had the opportunity of leading fencing. It always looked so attractive from afar but my parents restricted me from doing it. They said "I should be like a lady" so it wasn't the sport for me. I was currently admiring the swords as I picked one up and randomly started mimicking the poses which I copied from looking at the warriors practicing. That is when I heard a chuckle.
I turned around to see that it was Jeno, looking at me with his arms crossed. "What are you trying to do? You'll just injure yourself if you play around with that." he said laughing a bit, as his eyes creased. He looked so adorable.
"I... Nothing." I said keeping the sword down. "I'll leave." I said keeping in mind that how much he hates to see me. I was about to go out when he held my wrist stopping me. "Stay." was all he said. My eyes widened at what he just said. He might have noticed it too so he blushed a bit and said, "I meant, if you want to learn fencing, I can teach you."
"Wait really?" I asked fully turning to him, getting excited about it. He chuckled and nodded guiding me to where the equipments were. Wow, what happened to the cold Jeno? Actually, now that I think of it, he wasn't so cold past this month.
"...And we'll start with the basics." he continued explaining. He picked a wooden sword handing it to me. He went behind me, coming incredibly close making me blush hard. Our bodies were almost touching as his arms went over mine, holding the sword over my hands. "And you hold it in this way and swing." he instructed but for some reason, I could only focus on how close we were and how good his voice sounded so close to my ears.
"Princess Y/N!" a maid came running in, panting and catching her breath. She just interrupted such a good training session.
"Your parents have come to see you and the Prince!" she informed.
"Okay. We'll be on our way." said Jeno, stepping away from me looking a bit embarrassed that the maid walked in when we were in such a close position. To anybody, it might give off wrong signals.
We walked out to see my parents waiting in the Great living room admiring a portrait of Jeno hung on the wall. He really did look amazing in that. I admire it every morning while having tea.
"Mother? Father?" I ask from behind and the moment they turn around, their smiling faces drop.
"Why do you look so hideous!" was the first thing my mom commented upon seeing me. "Where's your gown??" she said staring at my pants and shirt.
"I'm sorry mother... I was just leaving fencing." I say looking down.
"What! When we clearly told you to be like a lady!" my dad shrieked at me making me feel much worse. "And why didn't you grow the length of your hair yet!" my mom joined in with a horrified expression as if I committed a crime.
"I'm–"
"There's nothing to be sorry about." I was cut off by Jeno who just walked in from behind me.
"Oh Jeno dear, how are you?" my mother immediately asked upon seeing him. My dad also, became all smiles again on seeing Jeno. "We are so sorry that our daughter cannot please you, can she?" my father asked as I looked away in shame.
"She's perfect." I heard Jeno say with a frown on his face. My eyes widened as I whipped my head to look at him in disbelief. Did he just say that I am perfect?????
"That's so kind of you to say prince, but our daughter–"
"I said she's perfect Queen L/N." he said more sternly this time. "She doesn't need to grow her hair or wear gowns to look beautiful. She is beautiful in my eyes and that is all that matters. I love my wife the way she is." he concluded his small speech leaving everyone tongue tied and shocked. Especially me.
"Oh... Oh... We see.." was all my mother could utter. "Well great then! We just wanted to meet you two since we were coming back from some business in the next kingdom. Glad to see you happy." my father chimed in later. Said that, they scurried away soon bidding us goodbye.
I was still in a state of shock with everything Jeno said. Did he really mean it?
"Thank you for saving me..." I muttered to him when my parents left.
"Actually... I meant it." Jeno said blushing a bit and scratching the back of his neck. "Before you say anything, I want to apologise for acting so rudely towards you back then. I really did not know if I would fall for you... But, as I observed you, I started liking you more and more. You are so different and unique unlike the others. You are sporty and fun to be with. You are hardworking, and like a perfect companion. I'm really sorry Y/N.... I don't know when I fell for you, but I love you. When your parents degraded you like that, it really hurt me... So what I said, I meant each and every word of it." he confessed.
"I..." this was all so much to take in, I didn't know how to react to this.
"It's okay if you hate me. I understand." said Jeno and was about to leave when I hugged him from behind. "Don't go!" I exclaimed in a hurry. "I love you too Jeno." I mumble against his back, hiding my face on his back, as I felt my cheeks getting heated up. The guy who I thought I had no future with, was here confessing his love to me.
He turned around with his charming smile and and held me in his arms. "Thank you... Thank you for forgiving me." he said kissing the top of my head and I nodded, smiling at him for the first time. "You look gorgeous when you smile. Keep smiling like that." he said making me blush even more and pinched my cheeks. "Cute."
"Close your eyes." he said suddenly. "Why?" I asked furrowing my eyebrows. "Just do it!" he said rushing me off and I do. I was wondering what was going to happen, when I felt his soft pair of lips attached to mine. He held me by my waist gently and cradled me in his arms as he kissed me sweetly. I was surprised so I did not move my lips for a second but then I got the hang of it.
When we separated, I looked at him breathlessly and asked, "What was that for?"
To which he replied, "I take you as my lawfully wedded wife My Beautiful Princess Y/N." and gave his signature eye smile making my heart skip a beat.
