You can't control the excitement bubbling inside you as you dial in your locker combination and open your locker. Last period just ended- the notes usually arrive during last period. You cross your fingers in anticipation and, as always, you aren't let down. A smile spreads across your face as you spot the envelope in your locker, taped to a bundle of roses, which you carefully detach from the note and hold in your left hand as you attempt to undo the envelope in your right hand.

"Y/N!" someone calls from down the hallway. You turn to see Wong Yukhei, better known as Lucas, your best friend since middle school. You wave to him happily as he jogs over to your locker, stopping to catch his breathe once he arrives.

"Did you get a note today?"

You nod, handing him the roses. "Hold these," you mumble as you unfold the note.

He inspects the flowers in his hands. "Roses today...do you like them?"

You shrug. "Yeah, it's really sweet of whoever's doing this to always bring me different types of flowers. Roses are nice."

"But you don't seem like them, do you?"

You shrug again. "I don't dislike them. They're pretty and they smell nice, they're just a little...cliché."

Lucas nods in agreement. "You're right. Too cliché."

Your eyes return to the note and a blush creeps onto your face as you read it.

"What does it say?" Lucas peeks over your shoulder and you giggle and push him away.

"None of your business," you tease him.

"Come on, you end up telling me every day, you might as well tell me right away instead of putting up a fight," Lucas argues.

He has a point. "It says that I look cute in my new sweater today," you smile as you glance down at your sweater. "He even noticed it was new."

"He's right," Lucas mumbles.

"Hmm?" You raise an eyebrow at him and he quickly shakes his head.

"Nothing, I'm just saying, your sweater does look nice."

You smile and poke his shoulder. "Thanks. I like your shirt, too! You only wear it, what, three times every week?"

"Shut up," he punches your arm playfully. "I have other shirts, this one is just my favorite."

You giggle as you take his hand and run out towards the parking lot. You both get into his car. "Who's house?" he asks, starting the car.

"Mine. I just cleaned my room, I want you to see it."

Lucas nods as he pulls out of the high school parking lot and starts driving towards your house. He memorized the way a long time ago, from when he used to bike over every day before he could drive. You knew the way to his house just as well.

After a ten-minute drive, you arrive at your house. You lead Lucas up the stairs to your room, opening the door and motioning your hands towards the inside as if you're presenting to him the inside of a mansion.

"Ta-da!"

"Woah," Lucas gapes at your room. "I can actually see the floor!" You smack his arm, laughing, as you walk past him into your room.

"Like your room is any better than mine was."

Lucas points an accusing finger at you. "Hey, at least my room has a path cleared out so people can walk. I throw my clothes to the edges of the room,"

"That doesn't do anything about the smell," you snicker as he walks in, shrugging.

"Guys' rooms are supposed to smell bad."

Lucas plops down on your bed, ruffling the covers in the process. "Lucaaas I just made my bed," you whine, trying to smooth out the covers.

"They're gonna get messed up when you sleep, anyway," he shrugs.

Twenty minutes later, you're both sprawled out on your queen-sized bed, a bowl of popcorn in between you, brainstorming over who could be leaving the letters.

"Taeyong has his eyes on you a lot, I've noticed," Lucas points out, tossing a piece of popcorn in the air and catching it in his mouth.

"Taeyong is a senior. He doesn't seem like the type to go after younger girls."

"But he's always staring at you,"

"Taeyong is, like, the hottest guy in school. Why would he be staring at me?"

"I think you're underestimating how pretty you are," Lucas chuckles, and you give him a funny look. "I mean, objectively speaking...you are pretty."

You look down to hide the blush on your face. Of course, Lucas is just saying this as a friend, but you can't control the butterflies in your stomach. You met Lucas in 6th grade when both of you were late to school and got locked out. Neither of you was tall enough to reach the buzzer to buzz you into the building, so you had to go on his back to press the button. Since then, the two of you have been practically inseparable. You started out with a very platonic relationship, but once Lucas hit puberty, the short, nerdy boy you knew in middle school turned into the tall, strong, attractive guy you know now. It would be a complete lie to say you haven't thought about Lucas in ways that go beyond the boundaries of "just friends." But you've been trying to push your feelings down for a while now. The last thing you want to do is risk ruining your excellent friendship with him.

"Thanks, but I don't think so," you say hesitantly.

"Well, whoever's writing these notes seems to think so."

"Do you think it's Doyoung?"

"Doyoung...?"

"Kim Doyoung. The junior. He seems like the romantic type."

"Yeah, but isn't he dating Somi?"

You think for a moment. "Ohh, yeah, you're right. I forgot they started dating, like, a month ago."

"Open," Lucas says absentmindedly and you open your mouth for him to toss a piece of popcorn into it. "It could be Jaehyun," Lucas suggests, and you nearly choke on the popcorn.

"Jung Jaehyun? The captain of the football team? Yeah right."

"You never know. They haven't left any hints, so it could pretty much be anyone."

"I don't think it's Jaehyun."

Lucas sighs dramatically. "Ugghh, this is so frustrating. We've been getting these notes for months, we've brainstormed and investigated almost every day, and we aren't getting anywhereee."

"You mean I've been getting these notes for months. Stop whining, I'm the one with the mysterious secret admirer. For all I know, it could be you," you laugh.

"Ha! You wish it was me."

"In your dreams, Xuxi," you smack his arm again. You would never admit, even to yourself, that you really did wish it was him.

~1 week later~

The notes haven't stopped coming and every day, you get a bit closer to discovering who it is. It's started to become easier to narrow down the suspects. At first, you think it's purely a coincidence that Lucas has a free period at the time you get the notes each day. But, as time passes, you start to pick up on small details that you overlooked at first.

Like how Lucas is so observant of which flowers you seem to prefer. He asks if you like them every day. When you say no, those flowers never show up again (you haven't' gotten any more "cliché" roses since that day last week.) And how he always seems to "objectively" agree with what is said in the notes. And how whenever the two of you are narrowing down suspects, he always seems to point you away from the signs that also apply to him.

For example, a few days ago you figured out that the person who writes the notes would have to have study hall last period, just like him. You asked if he could subtly watch your locker last period, and he quickly told you that wasn't a good way to eliminate suspects because the admirer could have a class last period but get someone else to put it in your locker for him. If he has nothing to hide, why not watch your locker for you?

Your suspicions of the admirer being Lucas are slowly growing, but the final piece of the puzzle is set into place when Lucas's schedule changes to study hall second period every other day. The notes show up during last period on the days when Lucas has study hall last period, but on the days he has study hall second period, the notes show up second period.

Feeling fairly confident in your evidence matching up, you decide to confront Lucas. But when you tell him about the odd coincidence of the changes in the times the notes show up fitting perfectly with the change in his schedule, his quickly shoots down what you're suggesting.

"My schedule shifted because my study hall monitor last period is on maternity leave and they couldn't find a sub. That means the entire class's study hall was switched to period 2. It's probably someone in my class. I'll keep a closer eye on everyone."

Then he walks off. Without even addressing the fact that the two of you have already eliminated nearly everyone else in his study hall as suspects.

Of course, being the easily excitable person you are, you get your hopes up. Is it possible that your best friend, your crush since eighth grade, is your secret admirer?

~the next day~

You ask Lucas if he wants to hang out after school like the two of you do every day, but, surprisingly, Lucas says no. And not in a particularly nice way, either.

"Sorry, I can't today, I have plans."

You try not to let your disappointment show on your face. "Oh, that's okay! What're you doing?"

"Does it matter? I'm just kinda busy."

You put your hands up defensively. "Sorry, I was just curious."

"It's fine. See you later," he waves before walking off to first period. You tell yourself not to worry about it. You need a break from trying to figure out who's leaving the letters in your locker, anyways. You decide to go to the mall instead to buy some new clothes.

The school day goes by fairly quickly. You park your car at the mall and walk inside, looking around at all the stores. You've been saving up babysitting money to buy some new clothes for the summer, and you're really excited. You've been so preoccupied with the notes that you haven't had any time for yourself. You're almost glad that Lucas was busy today.

Almost.

Until you see him at the mall. You aren't sure it's him at first but as you walk closer to get a better look, you realize it's definitely him. That's funny, you think, he ditched hanging out with me to go to the mall...where I was planning to go! You almost laugh at the situation. Was he embarrassed to go to the mall or something? You walk closer to him to say hi, but suddenly you stop in your tracks.

He's not alone. He's with a girl...your friend, in fact. You furrow your eyebrows, watching as Doyeon walks out of the store behind him with a few shopping bags in her arms. Is he...buying clothes for her? She says something to him and he laughs his sweet, heartwarming laugh, then wraps an arm around her. They barely know each other.

It feels like your heart is being crushed. Apparently, it takes seeing Lucas laughing and being touchy with another girl for you to realize how strong your feelings towards him are. You quickly turn around, bolting towards the exit of the mall. You get into your car and drive straight home, having to constantly wipe your eyes so your tears don't blur your view of the road. You're annoyed with yourself for letting yourself fall for him.

Of course he doesn't like you back, he's your best friend, you idiot. You're probably like a sister to him. It was silly of you to get your hopes up.

As you lay in bed that night, trying to calm your crying enough to fall asleep, at least you know one thing. The love notes can't be from Lucas.

~the next day~

School drags on forever today. You are more eager than ever to get to your locker and read the note; you could really use an ego boost today. After what feels like an eternity, the bell rings, indicating the end of the school day. You rush out of the science room and to your locker. You open it and what you see inside takes you by surprise.

The note is there, and it's attached to flowers, as always, but today it's attached to your favorite flowers. Daisies. You remove the note from your locker, closing your eyes and inhaling the sweet scent of the daisies. You find yourself waiting a minute for Lucas to come and open the note with you like he does every day. Five minutes pass and he doesn't show up.

Wait, why am I waiting for Lucas, anyways? He ditched me yesterday to flirt with my friend at the mall. There's nothing wrong with opening my note without him.

You roll your eyes and unfold the note, gasping quietly upon reading the words and almost dropping it on the floor. You blink a couple times before reading it again.

~

I got you daisies today. Found out they're your favorite.

I understand why you like them so much - they're almost as beautiful as you.

Come to the park at 3:00 if you want to finally meet me.

~

There's no way. Your secret admirer finally wants to meet you. And...he somehow knows your favorite type of flowers? You check your watch - it's 2:45. Although the note didn't specify which park, the author clearly goes to your school and there's only one park in your town, which is about a ten-minute walk from the school.

Your heart beats fast as you step out into the fresh spring air, tucking the note into the pocket of your jeans and setting off towards the park. Your steps speed up as you get closer, your anticipation growing.

Finally, you reach the park. It's 2:58...the person should be here by now. The note never mentioned where they would be standing, so you slowly begin to walk around the exterior of the park. It's especially gorgeous today - it's late April, the leaves are green, the grass is healthy and the flowers are in full bloom. About halfway around the park, you stop walking, taken aback by the person standing in front of you, about ten feet away.

It's Lucas. What's he doing here? Probably meeting up with Doyeon or something. You're about to turn back around and head the other direction when something catches your eye. He's holding something in his hands...are those...daisies?

You take a step closer to him and notice he's shuffling his feet awkwardly and fiddling with the stem of one of the white flowers in his hands. You want to walk away, still upset about yesterday, but something in you is pulling you towards him. He looks up at you and you realize his face is red, as well. For some reason, it's only then that you put two and two together.

The writer of the note said to meet him in the park...Lucas is in the park. The note came with daisies...Lucas is holding daisies. You look at him questioningly, and he smiles shyly.

"Surprise," he holds the daisies out towards you. Still in slight shock, your hands don't move.

"L-Lucas? It was you the whole time?"

Lucas nods and looks at the ground. "I know it went on for a long time, I-I was going to tell you sooner, I just couldn't build up the courage to do it. I mean, I didn't want to ruin our friendship or anything..."

You hesitantly reach out and take the flowers from him, shaking your head in disbelief. "But I don't understand...you ditched me yesterday to go to the mall and flirt with Doyeon." Your anger is clearly voiced in the last few words of your sentence.

Lucas's eyes widen and you nod, your lips pressed into a tight line. "Yeah, I saw that. I saw you buying clothes for her, and laughing with her, and putting your arm around her. You ditched me for Doyeon."

Lucas shakes his head frantically, his lips breaking into a slight smile. "No, no, it seriously wasn't what it looked like, Y/N. I wasn't flirting with Doyeon, I was with her because I know she's your friend. I needed advice about whether or not it would be smart for me to confess today...and I needed to know what your favorite flowers were. I was laughing and smiling because we were talking about you, and how amazing you are...I had my arm around her because I was thanking her for her help."

It feels like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, but at the same time, it's replaced by the weight of guilt. You got upset with Lucas for nothing. You open your mouth to speak, but no words come out. Because you haven't spoken, Lucas continues instead to fill the silence. "Please say something. I'm sorry if I made you upset by leading you in the wrong direction...I-I guess I kinda liked keeping it a secret. I didn't have to risk losing my best friend, but I could tell you all the things I wanted to say to you every day but was too shy to say. I loved watching your face light up each time you read the notes,..."

Lucas's face grows more and more red as he babbles on nervously, and you almost laugh with joy. You can tell he's panicking because you haven't spoken since your accusation. You still don't know what to say to shut him up so, instead of talking, you stand on your tip-toes slightly and press your lips against his.

His eyes widen and it takes a moment for them to drift closed as he kisses you back. You drop the daisies to the ground, wrapping your arms around his neck, and he wraps his arms around your waist. The kiss lasts for probably a full minute before you both pull away, panting and staring into each other's eyes.

"So...does this mean you like me back?" Lucas asks and you giggle.

"No, I just kissed you for absolutely no reason."

You wish you could take a picture of the momentary shock that washes over Lucas's face. You laugh and smack his arm.

"I'm kidding, dummy. How could I not like you back?"

"Oh, thank god," Lucas laughs with you, pressing his forehead against yours. "Y/N, will you be my girlfriend?"

You giggle again as you pretend to think. "Hmm...nope."

He smirks and picks you up, and you squeal slightly and wrap your legs around his waist. "Not falling for your sarcasm this time. You are now officially my girlfriend, whether you like it or not."

You smile and kiss his soft lips again. "Good thing I like it."
