TAMPERED PLANS
When we were done with assembly, everyone walked back to their classrooms in groups but I walked alone. Actually, It didn't even bother me. Everything was going according to my plan.
~Stay clear of the brats path.
~Hide my status
~Graduate in flying colours.
Well, the Chijioke guy kind of tampered with the first rule but I had the feeling he wouldn't disturb me again.
"Hey," I heard someone say beside me. I was startled but I was able to comport myself.
"Hi Jessica," I greeted back, solely for the purpose of leaving out the introduction.
From afar she looked tall but she was actually the same height with me, maybe taller with a few inches.
"Nairobi right?" She asked like she didn't already know.
"Yes".
"Nice name. Congratulations on your scholarship," she said.
I nearly froze on the spot. How did she know?! Now she was tampering with my number two plan.
"Wait why do you think I'm here on scholarship?" I asked her.
"Well let's start with your dressing–"
I frowned. Brat spotted.
"Oh. That's funny. Just because I dress simply you assumed I'm a pauper."
"Relax, I didn't say that," she tried to explain.
"Just leave me alone," I said and left her behind. I knew I overreacted but I didn't bother going back. I couldn't help but study myself in one of the mirrors that lined the hallway as I hurried to class. Did I really scream scholarship student?
When I got to the class, the students were already talking and laughing in groups while some were resting exactly like I planned to.
I studied all of them.
They all wore expensive looking wristwatches, braids, weaves and shoes. Air max, Gucci, Adidas and Dior was the only products on their legs. I tried my best not to feel too self conscious. I was literally the only girl on low cut and plane black cheap sneakers.
I looked towards the back where my seat was and found someone sitting on it. I stomped towards the person ready for drama. The boy was resting so I decided to tap him before speaking. When I tapped him the first time, he didn't respond. I tapped him again and he still didn't respond. I got impatient and shook him violently.
"Oga get out of my seat!" I told him in anger. I made a mental note that the boys in the school were annoying.
"What the freaking hell is wrong with you?" He yelled in response before actually looking up at me. I noticed that the noise in the class had reduced to a zero decibel. All attention was on us now.
I hated attention more than the devil.
"Mumu you are on my seat," I replied him in the same tone he used. Another mental note: I hate or rather hated him.
"You just resumed today and you're already making noise," A girl hissed. I looked in the direction of the voice and it belonged to a dark skinned almost petite girl. She had a wavy weave on her head.
"I don't remember asking for your opinion so just shut it," I retorted as rudely as I could. I had vowed never to be intimidated and I was going to stick to that.
The girl seemed surprised by my response. She then muttered something about scholarship students feeling on top of the world. I wondered how they could tell. Did I really look poverty stricken?
"At least I have the brains that you seem to lack," I responded to her statement. The class chorused yee's, Damns and mad oh's. I turned my attention back to the impostor on my seat. He was resting his head again.
"Dude, get off my seat," I shook him again.
"I swear if you dare touch me again I'll slap sense into you and I don't care if you put me in jail," he said so dead calmly that for a moment I wanted to let it slide. But being the stubborn girl I was I pushed on.
"Where is my school bag? I'm sure I dropped it here," I continued pointing at my table.
"Leave me the hell alone! Are you so blind that you can't see your bag there?" He asked in the usual tone pointing to my bag two seats away. I wanted to reply but I heard a 'good morning class'.
We all turned forward and the class muttered a response. The woman who spoke looked like she was in her early thirties. I wondered how she'd be able to control a class of rude, annoying and bratty teens.
"What's up with the gathering?" She asked with some kind of accent.
"The new girl is up," the same dark skinned girl who had spoken earlier said pointing her thumb in my direction.
I gulped.
I couldn't believe I was going to get in trouble on my first day. Such a bad start, bad for my plans.
"Ma, I'm not at fault here. This boy took over my seat," I defended pointing at my new hatee.
"Vincent?" She asked then folded her arms. "He doesn't cause trouble unless pushed to the wall". Every one in the class was seated already. I was the only one standing.
"I tried to be polite but he just blew up," I explained using my hand for emphasis.
"It's true Ms. Daniels," I heard a Jessica say. The woman turned her attention to her.
"When I arrived at school this morning she was already on that seat. When we came back from the morning assembly, Vincent was sitting on it. She tried calling his attention gently but he wouldn't respond so she shook him. And that's how it all started," the girl narrated.
"Mrs. Newscaster," someone said and the class laughed. I found it disturbing that the girl was watching my every move but I was grateful for that.
"Vincent, is that true?" The woman asked him. He didn't respond immediately but sent glares towards Jessica who didn't spare him a glance.
"I didn't know it was her seat," he answered. I was ready to yell Are you kidding me! But the teacher interrupted me.
"Okay," was the only thing the woman said.
Okay?!
I was beyond infuriated. I was expecting him to be punished or something. To make matters worse the teacher told me to leave the seat for him. I had to sit two seats to the front. It was not how I wanted my first day to be. I was beginning to dislike this Ms. Daniels.
Ms. Daniels introduced herself as the form teacher and English teacher. Then she made me introduce myself to the class after which the class introduced themselves to me. I was surprised that I was the only new student in the class. I didn't even bother memorising anyone's name. After the whole thing, we settled for English class.
At about some minutes past eleven, the bell indicating break time rang. The geography teacher who was in class then gave us an assignment before leaving. The students in the class left the class gradually. I noticed Ms. Daniels speaking to Vincent at her corner of the classroom. Well that made me dislike her less.
"Naya," someone called taking me by surprise. Richard was the only that called me that. But alas it was Chijioke. I rolled my eyes as he walked towards me. I thought he wasn't going to speak to me again!
"You are not allowed to call me Naya," I told him immediately he got to me. "What do you want?"
He got comfortable on my desk. "So I need permission to give my friend a nickname?". He ignored my second question.
We are not friends, I wanted to say.
I scoffed and rolled my eyes again, "Just stick with my name," I said in a tone that suggested end of conversation.
"You eyes might fall off if you continue doing that," he chuckled. I deadpanned and he shut up immediately. "I love the way you handled Olamide today. That girl can be annoying sometimes," he said. I guessed he was talking about the dark girl.
"And Vincent, seriously? I can't believe you called him a moron," he laughed. "That was brave but I'll advise you try not to cross his path again. He has serious anger issues."
"That doesn't mean he should be stupid and rude," I said looking over to where he was having a conversation with Ms. Daniels.
"Damn, girl take it easy," he chuckled. I was expecting him to be mad at me or something but clearly he wasn't."Are you not going for the lunch break?"
"Nope. Now leave me".
"For now Naya," he winked before leaving. I rolled my eyes but within me I smiled. I had no Idea why.
Chijioke waited for Vincent who was still receiving his sermon. When Ms. Daniels was done with him, Chijioke threw an arm around the frowning boy –although Vincent was taller than him. Chijioke said something to him and he chuckled.
I watched the two walk out of the class. Maybe Chijioke wasn't bad after all.
