Facts: Hair Myths

All right so at the beginning of this thing called "The Natural Hair Movement" there were so many rules and regulations.  (No sulfates, deep condition, only natural products, silk only!)  But after a while of caring for your hair you learn what works for you and you learn that most of this stuff is complete BS.

Myth 1: NO SULFATE SHAMPOOS!

I use sulfate shampoos, but then again I shampoo no more than once a month.  The reason why I use sulfate shampoos is because I like my scalp to be super clean so that I can get the best results when styling and my follicles aren't clogged.

Myth 2: Your Hair Grows Best With Protective Styling

Many people SWEAR by protective style meaning weaves, wigs, braids, etc.  I, too, loved them because when I took out my weave, I'd be looking like Rapunzel.  Many people who believe this myth live with the idea that once my hair gets this length I'll stop protective styling.

"I just big chopped.  I'm just waiting till I get to waist length, girl.  Until then Imma be looking Blexican."

Girl, you finna wait four years?

Your hair grows with protective styling and without it, so long as you take care of it.  The reason why it seems that protective styling helps it grow faster is because you don't bother with you hair for a month or so then you see the results after taking out the style.  That's why during school I protective style because I can't be bothered with it at 5 am in the morning and as soon as we get a break, I'm natural.

Myth 3: Cotton is AWFUL for your hair

While it is true that cotton is a great absorber (hence why we use it after the shower to dry our hair) it only poses a danger to your hair if your hair is DRY.  I sleep with a silk pillowcase but most of my clothes is cotton.  You encounter cotton everyday.  Your hair in general encounters material that may dry it out, but so long as your hair is moisturized and has slip, cotton can't harm it.

Myth 4: Deep Condition Overnight

I did that once.  Never again.  I don't want conditioner dripping down my neck when I sleep!  I don't want to not lay on my back because the conditioner will be pressed against my scalp making it feel cold and wet.  Besides, there's a maximum amount of hydration you're getting people.  A few hours of deep conditioning is pretty much equivalent to overnight conditioning.  You just doing the most.

Myth 5: Coconut is BAD for you

Did you think that before or after Naptural85 said she stopped using it?  My point is that lots of people stopped using coconut oil because people around them did.  Coconut oil in moderation is still very beneficial.  Some of y'all were just being greedy.

Myth 6: Moisturize with Oil

If you're goal is dry, greasy hair, go ahead.  Remember WATER=moisture.  I believed this myth once, but now I know better.  Moisturize by using water then sealing with an oil.  If your hair is fine, use a light oil like argan or jojoba.  If it's thick, use castor or coconut.

Myth 7: Wash & Go's Are Quick

They're anything but quick, sis.

Myth 8: 4C Hair Has No Curl

Lies.  All natural hair has a curl pattern.  4C hair just happens to have a very small curl.

Myth 9: You prepoo with conditioner

To prepoo is to add oil to your hair before shampooing so you don't strip your hair of it's natural oils.  What da hell conditioner gon' do?

Myth 10: Trim Your Hair Every 6-8 weeks

You do not have to do this AT ALL.  More likely than not, you'll be cutting off perfectly healthy hair and I'm not 'bout that.  We are trying to retain and grow our hair not cut off the hair we grow every six weeks.  Unnecessary.  Cut when you see damage.

Do you guys have any other myths that have you like..

~
