Chapter Twenty-Three
Two familiar voices drift across the black screen.
Sprinkles: *whispers* It's an elephant :o
Ravioli: *strangely proud* An African elephant, to be exact.
Margaret: Is it edible? I'd love some of those huge floppy ears. Hmm, elephant ears and mouse stew. I can really imagine that being one of the hottest dishes back in my hometown.
Ravioli: *disgusted* Your hometown must be full of rats like you.
Margaret: What, all six of them?
Sprinkles: Your hometown had six cats?
Margaret: Including me, yes.
Sprinkles and Ravioli: *slightly dumbstruck* You sure you aren't talking about your family?
Margaret: What? I lived in New Zealand. The population density is nonexistent.
Spook: CARRYING ON WITH THE DOCUMENTARY... Camera Cat?
The image of a magnificent grey creature, at least fifteen cats tall, comes into view.
Ravioli: *nods towards the screen* Thank you, Camera Cat. *clears throat* African elephants, also known as the savanna elephants, are the largest land mammals in the world. They're massive!
Margaret: That creature would last my town moons upon moons, dinner upon dinner to finish... We wouldn't go hungry again in a long, long time!
Sprinkles: *disgustedly* Get out.
Margaret: NOW DON'T TELL ME TO GET OUT YOU LITTLE PIECE OF —
Ravioli: They also have a long trunk with nostrils on the end. Its uses are countless; spraying water to clean itself, breaking off branches of trees, picking up food...
Margaret: Being my dinner...
Ravioli: *almost unnoticeable nose flare* It has tusks; one on each side of its mouth. Their skin is tough to protect them from predators. As you can guess, because of its formidable size, it does not have many predators. Elephants are the most vulnerable when they are babies because they haven't completely grown yet. Hyenas and lions will target them. It's adorable because at night the older elephants will create a circle around the calves in the middle.
Sprinkles: *blinks away a tear even though cats can't cry* The biggest threat to elephants are twolegs. Those cruel, heartless ruffians will —
Ravioli: — hunt the elephants for their tusks, which is ivory and can be fashioned into jewellery, instruments, electrical appliances and other twoleg devices. *glares at Sprinkles and mouths this is my show and you don't get to speak unless I tell you to so please go away and bring your poppycock with you, but since Sprinkles couldn't lip read she resorts to glaring back*
Elephants are herbivores and can live up to around seventy years —
Margaret: *chuckling under her breath* This one won't be alive once I'm done with it!
Ravioli: *feigns deafness* and are said to have a remarkable memory. They travel in groups, with the leader always being a female. Communication within the herd is done by producing sounds lower than a twoleg can hear.
Sprinkles: They are helpers to their surrounding and other animals that share their ecosystem. This is because, as part of their diet, they eat shrubs and trees which keep the savannah clear and allow grazers like gazelles to eat the grass that grows in place of the trees and shrubs.
Ravioli: *shoulders Sprinkles out of the way* And, today, there are around 150, 000 elephants left in the world.
Margaret: Heheheh, there won't be any left once I'm done with it!
Ravioli: STOP SAYING THAT! I'LL FIRE YOU!
Margaret: I'LL ROAST YOU AND EAT YOU.
Sprinkles: *slowly* Have you had breakfast yet, Margaret?
Margaret: *blinks* No... *eyes brighten* BUT I WILL HAVE SOON *charges towards elephant*
Ravioli: *watches in horror* WAIT WHAT NO COME BACKKKKKKKK
