400 years ago, before the great calamity and the sealing of Satella, a man came to the Kingdom of Lugunica, by some unknown means. He claimed that he wasn't from the area and that he was something called a pirate, as well as being from the great waterfall.

He was a complete mystery, and he was strong enough to the point that he could handle the Seven Witches Of Sin as well as fighting the Sword Saint on equal grounds and actually defeating him. To the people, he was a hero, a kind man that would help anyone despite him being a pirate, an outlaw. But to the government, he was a threat due to how powerful he was, they wanted him to be under their control, they were afraid of him because of his mysterious powers and feared that if he really wanted to, he could put the kingdom into disarray.

When he found out about how they were planning to hunt him down, he decided to leave so that the people involved with him wouldn't be hunted and possibly executed. But before he left he said that he left some belongings of his across different parts of the world and took one book with him, claiming that one day, someone of his bloodline of the next generation would find them. After that, he left and never came back.

This man later on became a legend, as people would tell stories about the pirate and how he came from and made it across the great waterfall and lived to tell the tale, something no one has ever accomplished before, something that everyone thought was impossible. His name was...

400 years later

In the Land of Wano, the region of Kuri, in Okobore Town, we can a see 7-year old boy named Natsuki D. Subaru along with his mother Natsuki Naoko waiting for the arrival of Natsuki D. Kenichi, the father of Subaru and the husband of Naoko as well as a powerful pirate. You see today was Subaru's 7th birthday and the little boy was excited, he couldn't wait to see what gifts his father brought with him from the outside world.

"Mooooom, when is dad gonna get here?! I can't wait any longer!" complained the already excited Subaru.

Naoko looked at her son with a loving and caring smile as she replied. "I'm sure your father will be here Subaru, you know the rules that the country follows don't you?"

"Yeah..." said Subaru as he looked down as he remembered what his mother told him about the country's policy.

You see, Wano follows a strict policy of isolationism, meaning that contact with outsiders such as pirates and other countries is prohibited. Leaving the country's borders is also considered a crime and outsiders who enter the country are immediately attack on sight.

This policy was maintained as a result of the country's geography that makes an invasion very difficult, as well as it's powerful samurai warriors. But luckily, whenever Kenichi would come back after his voyages, it would always take him a awhile to make it back to Okobore Town because according to him, it wouldn't be fun without any action, so he would fight his attackers before seemingly disappearing into thin air, quickly getting out of that area.

And due to the poor environment of the town, Kenichi would go to the other regions and steal food from the wealthy people that didn't give a damn about the others who were poor but themselves, as well as stealing some money and bringing it back to the town, so that way them and his family wouldn't starve, and whenever food or money was stolen, he would already be gone without a trace, so they never knew who was stealing the food or money. To the town's residents and Subaru, Kenichi was the greatest, he was a hero in their eyes, and Subaru wanted to be just like him when he got older.

Right when Subaru was done reminiscing about the past, he heard a familiar voice, which caused him and Naoko to look towards it's direction, in the center of the town stood a man with a white buttoned up T-shirt, and an extremely long, black cape behind him.

"Hey! I heard it's someone's birthday today!"

"Dad!" exclaimed Subaru as he ran towards his father and embraced him in a hug.

"How's my birthday boy?" asked Kenichi as he held Subaru and greeted his lovely wife. After Kenichi gave the food and money to the villagers as well as keeping some for himself and his family, they made it back to their home where they celebrated the boy's birthday.

Once they ate their meal. They got straight to Subaru's presents. Kenichi handed Subaru his first gift which happened to be a sheathed sword. The sheath being a dark black with a golden pattern on it.

When he unsheathed the sword, it was revealed to be  a nodachi which means field sword.

"Whoah!" exclaimed Subaru as he examined the sword, if you looked closely you could see his eyes sparkling.

Kenichi smiling at his sons reaction began to explain what kind of sword it was.

"You see my amazing son, that sword is called the nodachi, it's a type of sword known for its reach. Its cutting capability and range exceed that of a katana, due to its longer length, weight, and size.

'So cool!' thought Subaru as he put the sword back into it's sheath.

Once Subaru received his first gift it was time for his second gift as Kenichi pulled out a small chest. As he opened the chest, what was inside confused Subaru and his mother. Before Kenichi was able to speak, he was interrupted by some noise outside the house so he closed the chest and told Subaru to stay inside the house while he and Naoko quickly left to see what was going on.

Despite his parents warning, the young boy still wanted to see what was going on outside but before he could make a run towards the door. He felt hungry, so him being the innocent kid he is went to the nearest place to get food which was the weird fruit he saw in the chest before his father ran out the house.

When he opened the chest, inside of it was a weird looking fruit. It was a black teardrop-shaped fruit that had darkish purple swirls on it was well, the fruit was indeed weird to Subaru but he didn't have time to complain, he was hungry so he took a bite out of it.

To say the fruit tasted bad was an understatement, the fruit tasted like absolute shit! It had a very rotten and bitter taste to it, but Subaru ate the whole thing, fighting the urge to spit it all out, he swallowed every last bit.

Once he was done, he quickly ran out the house and ran towards the crowd to see what was happening. To say he shocked was an understatement, he saw some bandits in the area.

"Alright! All of you give us your food and money and we'll spare you all!" shouted the leader of the bandits

Seeing that he wasn't getting answer, he began to threaten them saying that if they didn't come clean with everything they had then he would burn the village down.

Subaru hearing this was pissed off, so he walked to the front of the crowd and called out to the bandit, getting his attention.

"YOU STUPID BANDIT! THESE PEOPLE HERE HAVE BEEN STARVING! IT'S THEIR FOOD, LEAVE THEM ALONE AND FIND YOUR OWN OR I'LL MAKE YOU!"

"Huh? Who is this brat?" asked the one of the lackeys.

"I don't know, but he said he was gonna make us leave?"

At this the bandits started laughing, not taking Subaru seriously. So he charged at the group, only to be kicked by the leader.

"Get off of me you jerk!" said Subaru as he looked at the leader of the group just smiling at him with his foot on his face. All the witnesses were to scared to do anything, knowing that if they tried to save him, then they would end up dead or injured.

"Hehehe. Hey guys, forget about robbing these guys, I say we killed the kid!" said the bandit, as his lackeys started laughing. He unsheathed his blade and lifted it in the air and pointed it downwards towards Subaru, getting ready to stab him.

Right as he was about to thrust the blade down, he felt a sudden chill go down his spine as all of his lackeys were on the ground knocked unconscious, he was the only one standing. As he looked towards the source he saw an angry Kenichi walking towards him with Naoko behind him, she was just as angry.

When Kenichi got closer to the leader, he leader tried to grab Subaru and make a run for it but Kenichi was already in front of him in a matter of seconds and punched the guy straight in the face. The force of the punch sent him a good ten meters as he skidded to a stop. As he was about to get up, Kenichi placed his foot on his chest as he added some force.

"Ok let me tell you something pal, if you and your group of scumbags come near this town or this village again, or if you go anywhere near my son, I will kill you...do you understand?" said Kenichi as he spoke in a cold tone. Before the bandit could reply his body went limp as he was unconscious.

"Subaru...are you alright?" asked Kenichi as he turned towards his son who was hugging his mom while crying.

"Hey, Subaru. There's no need to cry the bad guys are gone now ok?" said Kenichi as he reached a hand out towards his son, but Subaru quickly went to hug Kenichi.

"Hey, come on! Don't cry, you're a man!"

"But...dad..." Subaru didn't finish his sentence as his cried his heart out with both of his parents comforting him. Subaru wasn't crying because of his near death experience. It was part of the reason but not the full one, at that age Subaru know knew the reason why his father never took him along whenever he would leave to go travel. He learned the harshness of the world, his powerlessness, and most importantly, the man named Kenichi's greatness.

He truly thought that he wanted to become a man like him someday.

After the whole incident was over and dealt with and Subaru calming down, they went back to their home where Kenichi picked up the box and opened it, only to be shocked to find nothing inside it.

"W-W-What?! Where is it?!"

"Huh what's wrong dad?"

"The fruit that was inside this box! It's gone!"

"Oh you mean that weird looking fruit? I ate it!"

Hearing this, Kenichi turned towards Subaru with a frantic look on his face.

"No...No you didn't! Don't tell me you ate the fruit that was inside that box!"

I-I did, I thought it was a gift for me for my birthday, and I was hungry."

"It was but you didn't let me explain it first!"

"I don't get it dear, what was so wrong with the fruit that Subaru ate?" asked Naoko.

"The thing is, Subaru ate the Yin-Yin Fruit! Part of a group called the devil fruits eating any of them takes your ability to swim for the rest of your life! But the one he ate made him into a shadow and darkness human, pretty much a yin-human!"

"Huh?"

It took a few seconds for the information to sink in until it clicked. If Subaru had waited until his father explained what the fruit was, then he would have decided against eating it.

"N-NO WAY, IT CAN'T BE!"

"YOU DUMBASS!"
