Chapter Four
As night fell in the jungle, we found ourselves around a makeshift campfire while Heidi set up tents for everyone.
Klaus whittled away at a small chunk of wood, taking quick looks up at Kali as she roasted a marshmallow.
Noel and I sat next to each other, looking over her map. "... If the base is where they say it is, that would put it thirty miles from the coast." She said.
"That's quite the trek, especially when you're carrying a billion dollars of gold." I replied.
"Maybe someone was waiting for them."
Suddenly, Klaus stood, making his way over to Kali.
I watched, reaching my hand behind my back, gripping my pistol.
Kali looked up as Klaus presented her with the piece of wood. "An angel. For you, my dear."
Kali took the carving in her hands. "Oh, thank you..."
Klaus nodded to her, smiling, before turning to the rest of us. "I am off to bed, we have an early day tomorrow."
He stepped into his tent, then, Heidi eyeing Kali before following him in.
The rest of us shared a look as I released my gun...
After a while, Kali headed off to her own tent, leaving Noel and I alone.
I held a stick over the fire, my mind racing. Why set up a base in the middle of the jungle? What were they planning? Why did they need so much money?
"Penny for your thoughts?" Noel said.
I turned to her, dropping the stick in the fire. "I'm just trying to figure out their motivations. It was clear the war was over. Their leader was dead. Their numbers were small, splintered all over the world. Did they really think they could have launched some kind of counter attack?"
Noel gazed into the fire. "Why not? They had the funding, government backing, ally's all over the world. Besides, I don't peg Nazi's as the graceful loser types."
We shared a laugh before growing quiet.
I broke the silence. "Can I ask you something?"
She turned to me. "Sure..."
"Do you remember our trip to Venice?"
She looked up wistfully. "Ah, yes, you still had an appetite after crawling around poorly preserved dead people in Rome. It was very romantic."
I chuckled, nudging her. "After dinner, I mean... We took that moonlit boat ride through the canals... Just the two of us."
A little smile pulled at her lips as she looked to me. "It seemed like we had the whole city to ourselves..."
I took her hand in mine. "I was gonna... I was gonna propose that night..."
A look of shock crossed her features, her hand tightening around mine. "You were..? Why didn't you..?"
I looked to the fire. "Honestly..? I was scared that you would say no..."
She rested her finger under my chin, turning my head to hers. "Natalie..."
Her palm moved to my cheek and my eyes closed. "I loved you so much... I just... I didn't want to lose you, I didn't want to scare you away..."
"I loved you to, Nat... Deep down, I still love you... And, if it makes you feel better... I wouldn't have said no..." She replied, running her thumb over my cheek.
I opened my eyes, looking deep into hers. "I still love you to, Noel..."
She smiled, a light blush forming on her cheeks. "Kiss me..."
My body froze, my heart beating faster in my chest. "Noel-"
"Just, do it." She cut off.
I hesitantly did so, the feeling of her lips on mine warming my whole body, my hand finding the crook of her neck.
Her hands tangled in my hair as our kiss grew more heated, more passionate.
I got down on my knees in front of her, running my hands up her thighs as I moved my lips to the top of her chest, a light moan escaping her lips.
"Nat..?"
I looked up into her eyes. "Yes..?"
"Let's go to my tent..."
I smiled, nodding my head. "You got it..."
The next morning, I awoke to the sounds of the jungle, Noel's perfume drifting through my nose.
Her head was on my chest, her fingers tracing light circles around my stomach. "Good morning..." I said.
She looked up, smiling. "Morning... How'd you sleep?"
I returned her smile. "Really well... Like ridiculously well."
She started to laugh, causing me to do the same.
Then, we heard Kali's voice. "Up and at 'em."
Noel and I shared a look before getting dressed, slowly stepping out of her tent.
Kali watched us with a smile. "Well, this is interesting... Get lonely in your own tent, Nat?"
I rolled my eyes. "No... I never made it to my tent."
We all shared a laugh, then, as Klaus and Heidi joined us...
We packed up our gear before setting off deeper into the jungle.
Heidi took point once again, Klaus and Kali walking in front of Noel and I.
Kali was laughing. Her movements were playful. She was smitten to say the least.
"He's quite the charmer." I whispered.
"It's the accent. Works like a charm on American girls." Noel replied.
"Speaking from experience?" I asked teasingly.
She bumped me with her hip. "No... Although, you seemed pretty charmed yourself when Heidi bumped into you."
My eyes wandered to Heidi, then. Something about her seemed off. The way she looked at Kali, the way she stepped up to me at the restaurant. I got the feeling she was here for her own reasons. That she was using Klaus. But, for what?
"She gives me a bad vibe... Be careful around her, ok?"
Noel nodded. "Yeah, no problem."
The group suddenly stopped, Heidi addressing us. "We're here."
Everyone walked past her into a large clearing. Giant military style buildings stood tall in front of us. They were old, weathered. Completely out of place out here in the middle of the jungle.
"Wow... How many buildings are there?" Kali asked.
"We counted five in total, a guards post down that way, and a few machine gun positions around the perimeter." Klaus said, pointing his finger.
"There was definitely something big going on here..." I said, taking in our surroundings...
