Chapter Eight
I had to stop that truck. But, if I ran it off the road, Kali could get hurt.
Kali herself eyed me from the back of the truck, mouthing something to me.
It almost looked like she was telling me to ram the truck.
"If you say so..."
I shifted gears, pulling up next to the lead truck. "Here goes nothing..."
I cut the wheel hard, crashing into the side of the lead truck, sending it flying down into a small ravine next to the trail.
The lead truck hit hard, almost rolling onto its roof.
I hit the brakes, my truck screeching to a halt.
I quickly jumped out as Noel came to a stop behind me.
"What the hell did you do that for?" She asked.
"Kali told me to." I replied, running to the back of the lead truck.
Klaus laid on the floor, unconscious, a large cut above his eye.
Kali grabbed his gun, rubbing her head. "What the hell did you do that for?" She scolded now.
"I... I thought you told me to." I said.
She shook her head, jumping out of the truck. "I told you not to ram us."
I rubbed the back of my neck. "Oh... Sorry."
Klaus let out a groan as he climbed out of the truck.
I took the gun from Kali, pointing it at Klaus. "Don't move!"
He dropped his head with a sigh. "I should have killed you myself."
"Yeah, probably." I said.
Kali suddenly stepped past me, punching Klaus hard in the face.
He fell to the ground, knocked out again.
Kali spit on the ground. "Asshole."
Noel and I shared a look. "Well, that's one way to do it." I said.
Noel chuckled, wrapping me in her arms. "Thanks for not dying."
I captured her lips in a sweet kiss, pressing my forehead against hers. "I love you."
She smirked, kissing me again. "I know."
I rolled my eyes playfully. "Cute."
"Not to interrupt this... Nauseating display of affection, but what do we do now?" Kali asked.
Noel pulled out her phone. "I'm gonna try to get a hold of the police."
I turned to Kali. "And, we should get the rest of the team down here, we're gonna need some help..."
Kali pulled out her phone as I looked out over the road. The destruction and bodies left in our wake. "It's certainly one way to make a living..."
When the local authorities arrived, Klaus and the rest of his men were taken into custody. We were brought in for questioning as well, but the police decided not to charge us, considering the whole kidnapping thing.
My team was flown out the next day. We helped them recover the gold and led an expedition back into the mountain. Any remaining artifacts were documented and secured for transport to the local museum. They were very interested in preserving what was found in the base. I even got to speak at the opening of the exhibit.
And, as for the gold, considering it had no "definitive" country of origin... Well, it was all ours...
One Month Later...
Noel looked up as I entered the kitchen. She sat at the table, todays newspaper laid out in front of her. "Looks like our old friend Klaus is going to jail for a long time."
I sat down across from her. "Well, that's what he gets for trying to start World War Three."
Noel flashed me a humorous smile. "You're mentioned in the article to."
I raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
She nodded, reading from the page. "Famous archeologist, Natalie Raven, thwarts Nazi plot."
I chuckled. "Famous, huh?"
She shrugged. "Could be worse."
I looked around the giant mansion we recently acquired. "True..."
We met Kali for lunch later that day.
I sat at a table outside the restaurant, Noel joining me with drinks. "Tequila, your drink of choice if I remember correctly."
"It's barely noon." I said.
"So what? We're celebrating." Noel replied.
The loud rev of a car cut our conversation short.
We looked on as a bright orange, McLaren 750S pulled to a stop next to us. The door opened, a designer heel stepping out.
"Holy shit..." Noel said.
Kali got out, a little, black dress clinging tightly to her body. She handed her keys to the valet, giving him a wink and a tip before walking up to us.
"You certainly know how to make an entrance." I said as she sat down at our table, taking her sunglasses off.
"I try." She replied. "So, I hear that asshole is finally behind bars."
Noel nodded. "Twenty-five to life."
"He deserves much worse." I added.
"Maybe so, but I say this calls for a celebratory drink." Noel said, lifting her glass.
I clinked hers with mine before taking a sip.
"Thanks for ordering me one." Kali said.
We shared a laugh, Kali flagging down a server to order herself a drink.
I looked back at her car. "So, you went for the McLaren?"
She shrugged. "What's the point of being a millionaire if you don't spend it?"
"If you don't spend it, you stay a millionaire." I replied.
"That's no fun." Kali replied as the server returned with her drink.
She took a sip and I chuckled, shaking my head.
"Speaking of... I heard another story yesterday." Noel said.
Kali and I looked to her then, a sudden rush of excitement running through me. "What kind of story?" I asked.
Noel shrugged. "Nothing big... Just a disgraced, Egyptian priest buried with a cursed, diamond scarab... Not to mention upwards of twenty-million dollars worth of other treasures buried along side him."
"Isn't that grave robbing?" Kali asked.
"Only if you intend on keeping it for yourself." I replied.
"A local museum in Cairo would like to work with us on finding his tomb. They're willing to pay pretty well." Noel said.
I faced her, then. "I thought you were ready to settle down?"
She flashed me a wink. "Well, maybe one more adventure wouldn't hurt..."
The End
