THREE. christmas failures and mistletoe scams
IT JUST so happen to be Christmas in Miami. No snow, hot weather, and Charlotte working during the holiday.
Not that she minded. She loves working at the children's facility and it was a dream come true, but ever since she had been promoted, she had been put on stricter task and obligations. Such as running a Christmas party for the kids.
She thought it was a wonderful idea. Not many kids could go home during this time and she really wanted to make Christmas special for them and their families.
Not only had Charlotte thought it was a great idea, but so did Austin and Trish.
Austin wanted to give back. It was a special time of year and with his newest Austin Moon doll coming out, he couldn't wait to pass them out to the kids at the party.
As for Trish, she really wanted a promotion at work after the luau situation.
All three of them were determined to have the best Christmas for these kids (well) and nothing was going to get in the way of that.
"BAM!" AUSTIN smiled, showing off the prototype doll to Charlotte.
"This is amazing! Looks just like you." She praised, "The kids are gonna love this."
Charlotte spun her chair around and grabbed a sheet of paper from her bag.
As she dug around for a pen, Austin glanced up at the wall.
Not a lot had changed in Charlotte's room. Her walls the same color, the space posters covered the walls, and the pictures that hung around her dresser.
But something stuck out. Austin stood from his seat and grabbed the painting he had made her from her bedside table.
He thought she would've gotten rid of it. He had been over countless times and hadn't noticed it, but this time... it stuck out.
Why would she keep his stupid little stick figure painting with the letters ILY written so small he almost couldn't find it?
"I've always liked it."
Austin looked back over his shoulder. Charlotte sat with her legs crossed as she held the Austin doll and pen in her hand.
"Really?" Austin asked.
"Yeah," She smiled, "I wish you could've seen your face when you were painting it for me. You were so focused on getting it right. You almost seemed nervous to give it to me. So, I always kept it."
"Why?"
Charlotte stood, "Do you want it back?"
"No, no." Austin turned, holding the painting in his hands, "I left a message for you in it."
"Oh, really."
"Yeah, but it's not a big deal... anymore." Austin sat the painting back down and returned to his seat, "So, these are the kids attending the party?"
It took Charlotte a moment to answer before she joined his side again. Her mind on the stupid little painting she kept close by, wondering what message Austin left inside.
TRISH HAD successfully managed to have the party he held at the beach club and so far everything.
Charlotte had been crouched down by one of the kids from the facility as she adjusted his shirt for him. The boy quickly ran off to play with the others and she stood to her feet.
Her dainty Santa Claus dress stopped at her knees and her hair had been straightened for the first time out what seemed to be forever as a Santa hat rested on top of her head.
She stood and turned, Austin standing close behind.
"I really appreciate everything, Austin."
He smiled, "No worries. The kids love them and we worked all night fixing them."
"Fixing them?"
"Yeah... we had a mishap with the doll's hairstyle, but no more worries. It's all been fixed."
"Just hair?" Charlotte pressed, "Well, okay just the hair."
"Long princess hair." Austin laughed, passing a new and improved Austin Moon doll. "Hey, kids." Austin called, "Those don't just look cool. For a real surprise, press the button."
As everyone pressed the button on the doll... the least and most unexpected thing happened. The Austin doll cried and "peed" on everyone who held in their hands.
"Did this thing just pee on me?" Charlotte asked.
"That's not what they're supposed to do."
"This isn't a real Austin doll." A little girl approached, "You ruined Christmas."
"I can't believe I ruined Christmas." Austin sighed.
"You didn't know." Charlotte reassured, "Beside... it could be worse... it might get worse."
Charlotte sitting down on the steps; Austin joining her side.
"What do you mean?"
"It was my job to have this Christmas party be successful and I completely failed and ruined these kids Christmas."
Charlotte wasn't a perfectionist and she knew that, but when it came to something she was passionate about, she put a ton of pressure on herself for that to be perfect.
"Charlotte, I'm so sorry." Austin apologize.
"It's fine." She sniffled, standing to feet and Austin joining her side, "I mean, the pretty set could've been destroyed."
"No, I'm the real Santa!" Dez shouted.
Everyone has backed away as Chuck and Dez pushed one another. Chuck has pushed Dez into the large Christmas tree and everyone watched the tree, decorations, and table all collapse.
"On the bright side, no one's paying attention to the dolls anymore." Ally smiled.
"Charlotte, I-"
Austin watched as Charlotte puffed her cheeks out. Something she did often to prevent herself from crying, but this time it didn't seem to register as the corner of her eyes began to water ever so slightly.
"Look, I can fix this." Trish said, "Austin and Ally get ready to perform. Dez, clean this up."
And somehow Trish was able to get the place cleaned up and fixed in the minutes flat.
Austin and Ally performed their song "I Love Christmas" and with that jazzy musical performance... it seemed that every child had forgotten that the Austin Moon doll and peed on them.
"I really appreciate everything you've done, Austin." Charlotte smiled, "I can't thank you or Trish enough."
"No worries." Austin smiled, pulling a small, wrapped gift box out, "Merry Christmas."
"You didn't have to get me anything."
"I wanted to."
She opened the box and the smile that rested on her face slowly disappeared as she pulled the small paper from the box.
"A receipt?"
"No, silly. I bought you a star."
"You're joking. Like, a star in the sky?"
Austin laughed, "I don't know any other stars. It's named after you and you'll forever have it."
Charlotte smiled as she wrapped her arms around Austin, "Thank you."
Once they pulled apart, Austin hair grazed the mistletoe above.
"Look, we're under the mistletoe." He smiled, "I don't make the rules."
Charlotte playful rolled her eyes.
The cards were in her hands. Would she kiss him or would she just let it go?
She knew how she felt about Austin and she knew what she wanted to do.
As she took a step forward, a shout from Dez caused the two to quickly step apart as he flew backwards.
Austin sighed. Charlotte squeezed his cheeks with her hand, turning it to the side, and gently kissed his cheek.
"Merry Christmas, Austin."
