SIX. possible second chances and miscommunication
CHARLOTTE AND Austin can always agree that their dates have never been successful. I mean, it was successful for them. They got to one place and back without many injuries. Others may not see this as fun, but Charlotte and Austin had a good time and that's all that mattered.
Their first date on the other hand was an absolute mess.
She had to work that night, but Austin was determined to get this date in with her if it was the last thing he did.
Charlotte approached the entrance of the diner to lock the doors and as soon as she pulled out the keys, Austin ran towards the door, standing on the other side.
"I know you said you had to work, but I was not missing out on this date." Austin huffed.
"I'm about to get off if you don't mind the smell of hamburgers and grease."
"I have a better idea."
His better idea?
"We've made three milkshakes each, all with secret ingredients, and all we have to do is guess what the flavors are." Austin explained, "This is, mysterious milkshake madness!"
Charlotte smiled, "This was your better idea?"
"Better than missing out on this date I wanted to go on."
"That's fair. Give me a milkshake mystery man."
Austin slid the brownish-colored milkshake towards her and she gently lifted her straw up. The brown mush not blended all the way and a clump of mystery gunk fell from the straw.
That was the downfall of their date. She took a couple of sips and instantly threw it up.
Austin could've sworn that this would be his last date with her... and he was wrong.
After walking the girl home, she faced him, a lopsided smile on her face.
"I had fun."
"You threw up."
"I still had fun. You made an effort to get this date, so I appreciate you trying."
Austin nodded, a smile on his face. This first date wasn't successful and the following dates weren't any better, but they were together and that's all that mattered.
"CAN WE get a new waitress?" Austin asked.
Austin, Dez, and Ally had all gathered at the Melody Diner. Trish had been their current waitress and though she had started this job approximately a week ago, she wasn't doing that bad of a job for Austin to want a new waitress. Unless that new waitress was Charlotte Taylor.
Austin's crush on Charlotte had become very obvious to Trish when she caught him staring at her from across the mall. That day, Charlotte had Nelson in tow and they had been window shopping and all Austin could do was stare.
"Hey, Charlotte, can you come here for a second?" Trish called.
Charlotte pulled her attention away from her co-worker Cassidy and ventured her way towards their table.
"Can I help you?"
"You don't sing either?" Ally asked.
"No." Charlotte laughed, "I've worked here for months. Mindy isn't going to fire me for not singing. I helped get Trish this job."
"It's true and it only cost fifteen dollars." Trish smiled.
"You paid Charlotte for a job?" Dez asked, "If it was that easy I would've applied."
Charlotte smiled, "Mindy doesn't just hire whoever applies. I had to slip her the idea of Trish for her to be hired."
"Can you take their orders?" Trish asked, "I'll pretend to do work with Cassidy."
"She's taking orders at the bar right now."
"Perfect! I'll stand there and pretend I'm learning."
Trish held her smile as she walked off to join Cassidy's side.
"What can I get you guys started with? Oh, just don't order the chips and salsa." Charlotte said.
"Why? I want chips and salsa."
"Did somebody say salsa?" Mindy, the manager asked, "Salsa!"
"Come on, blondie." Charlotte called, pulling Austin from his seat and began to dance the salsa with him, "You that girl right there?"
Austin glanced back. Cassidy now dancing alongside Trish.
"Yeah... what about her?"
"Don't you think she's cute? Like, she's super pretty isn't she?"
"I mean, yeah, but I don't think I'm her type, you know?"
Austin spun Charlotte around and quickly caught her hand again.
"You're everyone type Austin." Charlotte smiled, "You're good-looking, caring, kind, funny, what girl wouldn't like that?"
"I don't know... I think I've got my eye on someone."
"Really? Well, I'm sure she knows how lucky she is."
Austin spun her around one last time before the music died down.
"I'll get your chip and salsa."
Charlotte walked into the back and Austin sat back down in the booth.
"Do you think they would hire me?" Austin asked.
"Why would you work here?" Dez questioned, "Mindy works here and I can't visit you every day if she's here?" He whispered.
"If I work here I can be around Charlotte more often! Maybe even butter her up some and boom! She's my girlfriend again." Austin smiled.
"Let's order first." Ally said, "You'll have a better chance on a full stomach."
So that's exactly what they did. They ate and Austin was hired on the spot.
Every little thing had distracted Austin. Charlotte walking by, Charlotte taking orders, Charlotte passing orders out. Everything she did, Austin became easily distracted.
Austin approached the bar that Charlotte stood at and rested his hands against the counter.
"Hey, Charlotte, Mindy wants you to train me."
Charlotte smiled, "It's not that hard. All you have to do is take orders, pass food out, and pick up your tip if they were nice enough."
She slid the plate of onion rings down the table and let Austin know she was headed towards the back to grab another plate.
"Austin, I need you." Charlotte called.
He sighed lovingly and stepped away from Ally, "I need you too. I mean- I mean, I need you to tell me why you need me."
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why?"
"Your hand is in hot Mac and Cheese."
Austin glanced down, "Hot. Just checking if it's hot enough and it is. Hot!"
Austin backed away from Charlotte and he and Ally dashed out.
Hours later the duo returned (separately, but returned nonetheless) and Austin sat down at the piano.
"Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention, please? I'd like to dedicate this song to the coolest girl in here- Charlotte."
Charlotte turned with a smile and joined Austin by the piano. Was it awkward that her ex-boyfriend was dedicating a whole song to her? Yes, it was. She could only smile and watch everything unfold.
As Austin sang, his lyrics seemed to not align with what he intended. Saying that she was like the butter to his pancake stack and that she was a rollercoaster ride and he felt like throwing up.
Charlotte awkwardly smiled and glanced around the room. She stepped away from the piano and gently waved Austin off before escaping towards the back.
This was definitely worse than their first date.
CHARLOTTE RESTED against the bar with Carter sitting on the other side.
"It wasn't too bad, but then he compared me to a rollercoaster and said he felt like throwing up." Charlotte sighed.
"I mean, you threw up on your first date. Maybe it was a sign."
"A sign of what?"
"That Austin still is head-over-heels for you. Why else would Austin take his time to try and write a seemingly horrible song for you?"
"Shut up." She chuckled, "That's not the case."
"Have any other ideas, Sherlock?"
No, she didn't have any other ideas. She didn't have any ideas in the first place. She chose not to question why Austin wrote a really bad song about her, but she couldn't deny that what Carter had said made sense.
Austin got a job at the diner and for what? Why did he want to work there all of a sudden? She also chose not to question it. She knew where her feelings for Austin stood, but if Austin liked her, even after "breaking his heart", she wouldn't know what to do.
"Hey, Charlotte." Austin sighed, "Sorry about that song."
"It's was a silly song Austin. No big deal."
"That song didn't say what I wanted it to, but this one does. Guys!"
Soon the music started and he began singing and dancing.
Charlotte could only watch in awe. Though Austin had always sung Charlotte's favorite songs and put his own twist on them, he had never written a song for her.
Once that was over, Austin sat on top of the bar, blocking Carter's view of the two.
"That was really sweet. Thank you, Austin." She smiled, "First song you've ever written for me."
"Not the first technically. It's the first that I've shown you. It came from my heart... and my mouth. So, what do you say? Will you go back out with me?" Austin asked.
"That's what that was? You were asking me out?"
"I told you." Carter muttered.
"Yeah, I think the song said it best. So..."
Charlotte let out a small breath. She didn't know what to say. She knew that she was going through several different scenarios in her head before she landed on what she thought was best.
"Meet me here before closing."
Austin held a bright smile and hopped off the counter to tell his friends the news.
"You're going on a date with Austin?" Carter asked.
"One friend date couldn't hurt."
"Austin just confessed that he still has feelings for you while you smell like grease and this is what you're giving him in return?"
"I don't know what to do right now, okay. The guy that I broke up with just did a big thing for me and rejecting him doesn't feel right. I'll figure it out when this friend date is over."
Carter picked up a fry and stared at Charlotte, "I think you've dug yourself back into Austin Moon's heart."
"Okay, what was I supposed to do?"
"Hello? Reject him."
"Okay, Mr. "I have a crush on-""
"Finish the sentence and you won't be able to make the date with Austin."
"Maybe that's what I need."
CHARLOTTE APPROACHED the entrance of the diner to lock the doors and as soon as she pulled out the keys, Austin ran towards the door, standing on the other side.
"Sorry, I'm late. I wanted everything to be great." His voice muffled through the door.
Charlotte allowed Austin inside before locking the front doors. She turned and faced him.
"So, what's supposed to make things great?"
"I know our first date wasn't... up to what I thought, but you said you had a great time so I thought I would do that date again. A refresher. Especially, when I got the chance to do it again."
Charlotte softly smiled. She broke up with Austin for a reason, but the fact that he went out of his way to get this second chance and even wrote a song for her meant a lot more than she thought.
She didn't know if it was the fact that Carter pointed out that Austin hadn't been over her or if she had come to this sudden realization, but maybe Charlotte Taylor was still smitten about Austin Moon.
