NINE. warning: a lot of stress is about to happen
AUSTIN MOON adored Charlotte Taylor. She was the sweetest, most kind-hearted person he had ever met and had the pleasure of dating... twice.
He could remember a lot about their first couple of dates... but his favorite date could never, ever be topped.
Before the big breakup that led to a spiral of "will they, won't they," Austin's favorite date with Charlotte was a simple as it could be.
Austin brushed the hair out of Charlotte's face as she rested her eyes shut against his pillow. She had been covered with a blanket that Austin had given her. Her white ankle socks peeking out from underneath.
Charlotte had dozed off not that long ago. At this point, Austin and Charlotte had been dating for about three or so months. Charlotte's parents were not used to her dating quite yet and Austin's parents were not used to him bringing a girl home.
Before the overnight internet sensation, before the record deals, before all the confusing love... pentagons. It had always been Austin and Charlotte.
Austin had never felt this way about a girl ever. Something about Charlotte just made him... flutter almost. She wwas kind, caring, never grew angry with him, and seemed to always understand a situation.
Charlotte shifted slightly as Austin brushed his hand across her face. He didn't want to wake her, but she soon took a deep breath in and fluttered her eyes open.
Austin held a small smile as he continued to caress her cheek, "Morning."
Charlotte muttered a response under her breath before sitting upright. Austin slowly followed her actions, watching as she brought her legs close to be body, her back pressed against the headboard of the bed, her cheek pressed agaisnt her knee.
"Tired?" Austin questioned.
She shook her head no. She turned her head sightly and sent him a small smile.
Charlotte was hardwokring. Once she had her mind on something, she would do anything to complete that task at any given time.
Charlotte always liked Austin. She liked how goofy he was, that he could make her laugh, he could teach her to play a simple tune on the piano.
She shifted her position. Now sitting in between Austin's leg. She smiled up at him, "Do you have a back up plan?"
"Back up plan?"
"Like, a career back up plan. I know that if being a doctor doesn't work out for me I would want to be...a teacher."
Austin smiled, "A teacher?"
"Yeah. I think it would be fun to basically babysit a bunch of snot-nosed kids for eight hours a day." Charlotte laughed, "What about you?"
"Being a rockstar has been the only thing I've ever seen myself doing... unless working at my parent mattress company means anything." The two of them shared a laugh and Austin continued, "You'll be a doctor. I have no doubt in that."
"Why?"
"Because you're Charlotte and I'm not letting you give up on your dreams. I know you wouldn't live down my dreams."
Charlotte smiled, shimming as close to her boyfriend as she could before resting her hands on the nape of his neck, her fingers gently caressing his jaw.
Austin could feel his face growing warm as the blush on his face deepened. He rested his hands on her hips, the small smile never leaving either of their faces.
"Are you okay?" Charlotte asked in a whisper.
"Just fine."
Charlotte felt Austin's cheeks heat up and watched as his eyes quickly glanced down at her lips before meeting her eyes again.
Austin and Charlotte have kissed before, but something about this moment was different.
She ran her thumbs over his jaw one last time before leaning forward; a gently kiss placed on his lips. Austin let out a somewhat sigh of relief as kissed her back.
Charlotte had always been soft with Austin. Her words, actions, even her smile had been soft with him.
It was definitely something knew and something he had to learn how to do himself, but, Charlotte made it seemed easy.
Charlotte rested her forehead against Austin's, "You are literally my best friend." She whispered, a smile on her face.
"You are mine."
"And Dez?"
Austin sighed, "Don't tell him."
Charlotte held a toothy smile.
CHARLOTTE SAT in the food court, her mind on the news of her and Austin's blossoming relationship. She almost felt like it was too much spotlight on her. She almost wished she would've kept it private for the most part.
Austin smiled once he caught glance of her. Something about Charlotte instantly put a smile on his face. She just radiated positive energy.
"Hello." Austin smiled.
Charlotte quickly shut her phone off, looking up at Austin with a small smile, "Hey." She kissed him quickly before he sat down across from her.
"Are you busy?"
"Right now?" She asked, "No?"
"Great. Come on."
Austin quickly stood from his seat and grabbed Charlotte's hand. She quickly pulled him to a stop.
"Where are we going?"
"I'm taking you get lunch. Our first official date as a couple... again."
Charlotte let out a soft sigh, glancing back and taking notice of the paparazzi taking pictures of her and Austin.
"Hey," Austin called, gently taking Charlotte's chin and making her face him, "you okay, Char?"
"Yeah... yeah. Um, let's go."
Charlotte picked her phone up from the table and quickly dragged Austin into an unknown direction.
THE DATE couldn't have been worse... well it wasn't bad. It was actually a solid date. If you want to exclude the people watching and the paparazzi lingering in the bushes.
It seemed after that Charlotte began to distance herself in public with Austin. It seemed to be easier for her to date him in the private eye for right now until she felt comfortable for strangers to take pictures of her in board daylight.
"Have you seen Charlotte? She's late for our date."
"Charlotte's home." Carter answered, "She said she had this huge work thing to study for and stayed home the majority of the day."
Austin sighed and left Carter's side. It had become nightfall before he went to Charlotte's. He wanted to give her enough time to study before hanging out with her.
Shockingly enough, her father allowed Austin upstairs and he gently knocked on her door.
It creaked open and once inside, he saw Charlotte's face buried into a blanket and textbooks laying across her floor.
Austin gently shut the door and sat down beside his sleeping girlfriend. He had spent most of the day with Ally trying to find the perfect song to pitch for this movie executive.
Charlotte was exhausted. She sat up slightly and checked the time.
She quickly stood, almost giving herself whiplash as she tried slipping some socks on.
She finally noticed Austin sitting near her previous spot, a small smile on his face.
"I'm sorry." She apologized, "I was just-"
"Studying." Austin stood, joining her side, "Carter told me. We can hang out now. I'm sure there's a movie we can catch."
"Austin, I- I wanna go out."
"What do you mean?"
"Being in the spotlight has always been your thing. Not mine." She explained, "I can't handle all the... people watching."
"Well, no one is going to watch you at the movies. They'll be looking at the movie."
"You know what I mean."
"Pretending I don't hurts a lot less." He chuckled.
Charlotte sat down on her bed. She was confused. This could go one of several ways and she only felt like the worst option was available.
"Are we breaking up?" Austin asked.
Charlotte glanced up, her eyes glossed over, "I don't want to. But those people, Austin... I don't know how you do that."
"Is that why you didn't want to go out earlier?"
Charlotte sighed, nodding as she did so.
Some of Charlotte's most intimate moments with Austin had been flagged over several magazines and websites and it didn't seem to die down whatsoever.
"Hey," Austin smiled, joining her side on the bed, "it's not easy. I know it's not. So, we'll figure this out... but do you want to figure it out without me or... without me?"
Charlotte shrugged, "Neither sounds fun." She sighed, facing him again. She didn't say anything as she wrapped her arms around him, "You're my best friend, you know?"
"What about Carter?"
"Don't tell him."
Austin held a small smile as he took a deep breath in. He wanted to protect Charlotte and if that meant letting her go to figure out the sudden spotlight, by all means he would hate it, but he would rather let her go than be worried about messing up for a simple thing in public.
Charlotte Taylor meant more to Austin Moon than anyone could imagine, explain, or draw out.
Austin wasn't letting her go fully, just enough for her to come back when she felt ready.... no matter how long it would take.
