FOUR. the messy tale of four lovestruck teens

CARTER MONTANA wasn't a quitter by any means. He was shy at the beginning, but came out of his shell as he was a fighter and did whatever he could for himself and the people he cared about.

"I've given up on my love life with, Dez."

"What?"

"I said-"

"No, I heard what you said. I just don't know who I'm talking to." Charlotte scoffed, "What are you talking about?"

"Look, I really, really, really like Dez, but I can't keep walking around waiting. He's really supposed to be waiting for me not the other way around."

"Have you even told Dez that you like him?"

"No, that's like scraping the barrel for me. You asked Austin out and look how that went."

"Excuse me, but I think Austin and I had a great relationship before we broke up."

"The first time or the second time?" Carter asked. Charlotte held her mouth agape, "I'm joking. I love you and Austin together. I don't care how often you two break up and get back together and I would love to have a relationship like you and Austin have, but Dez... is Dez."

"And you like Dez. So, what's the problem?"

"Why hasn't he noticed?"

"This is Dez we're talking about." Charlotte said, "Maybe you just to need to push yourself forward and figure out what you need to do to tell him how you feel."

"What pushed you to ask Austin out?"

Charlotte shut her locker and and leaned back on it, "He was cute and I wanted a chance."

"So, his attractiveness pulled you in?"

She laughed, "Not just that. He just seemed like a great person to be around and he was... he is."

"You still like him."

"This isn't about me. This is about you and Dez." Charlotte paused, grabbed the flyer off the nearby locker, "Call Dr. Cupid. I'm sure he could help."

"Yes, getting advice from a faceless man works so many wonders."

Dr. Cupid was the school's love advice column. How it got approved was a different story. No one knew who Dr. Cupid was. He was a anonymous guy who apparently gave good advice.

"I'm just trying to help, okay?"

"I know... I'll do it if you do it."

"Why?"

"Because you still like Austin and something is in the way from you pushing yourself forward again."

Charlotte sighed, "Fine... you do it, I'll do it."

Carter smiled pulling out his phone to prepare his message for Dr. Cupid, "Hello, Dr. Cupid... should I say my actual name? What if it's someone we know?"

"I doubt it. Do you know anyone that could give out love advice?"

Carter shrugged his shoulders and continued with his message. Charlotte sat down on the ground, her legs crossed in front of her as Carter soon joined her side.

"Read it."

Charlotte took the phone from his hands and cleared her throat, "Hello, Dr. Cupid, CM here and I'm here to talk about my romantic issues that shouldn't be happening right now."

"Okay," Carter smiled, "keep going."

"There's a guy who've I known for awhile now, and with every passing glance, nothing seems to catch his attention and I don't want to be the runner... I wanna be the one whose caught. What can I do to further catch this guys attention because I really like him." Charlotte read, "Thanks for the help... or not depends on the results, Dr. Cupid. Sincerely, CM."

"Does that sound good?"

"Definitely sounds Carter Montana."

"Good." He smiled, "Your turn."

"Do I have to?"

"Okay, let's discuss." Carter turned towards her, "Austin Moon has been the love of your life-"

"Love of my life?"

"You're telling me you didn't love Austin when you two we're together?"

"I don't know? Maybe?"

"My case stands. Anyways, love of your life. Then he continues to date and you... you linger."

"Linger? What do you mean?"

"You may have moved on from Austin at some point, but you haven't romantically moved on." Carter explained, "Austin has dated Brooke and Kira. You... dated Austin twice."

"And that's a bad thing?"

"No, silly. I'm just saying... I'm asking, did you ever really move on from Austin when you two broke up?"

She sighed, "I tried. I tried to do a lot of things. I tried to talking to him after and... he avoided me at all cost. Why did he avoid me?"

"Guys are weird. Why do you think I hang out with you so often?" He laughed.

Charlotte didn't though. She hadn't put much thought into it before, but now thinking about it, why did Austin avoided her so heavily? She allowed herself to easily step back into his life and all he did after they broke up was avoid her at all cost.

Charlotte grabbed her bag from the floor and stood, "I have Chemistry."

"Charlotte." Carter called, "Don't think about the negative of it, okay? Maybe he was just nervous around you when y'all broke up. It's not a big deal is it?"

"I hope not."

THE NEXT Day, Carter and Charlotte ventured their way towards Sonic Boom. He had been apologizing every minute for making Charlotte feel (what he assumed) like Austin wanted nothing to do with her after they broke up.

"How many times do I have to say sorry? I never meant- Oh my, God!"

Charlotte felt herself jerk back as Carter gripped her shoulders.

"If you release me, I'll forgive you."

"Look."

Charlotte glanced into Sonic Boom, her eyes growing wide as Dez, Trish, and Ally walked out. Dez wearing a Dr. Cupid coat.

"Did you guys know that Dez was Dr. Cupid?" Ally smiled, "He helped Trish with her date last night!"

"It actually worked! I'm going to help him get noticed."

"Yay." The two smiled.

"Come on, we're going down to the beach club." Trish smiled.

The three of them walked off leaving the two of them alone.

"This is revenge isn't it?" Carter asked, "I shouldn't have mentioned you and Austin because some higher up was going to work their magical spell to make you two happy and because I ruined it, this is my karma."

"Maybe Dez doesn't know it's you. He probably gets hundreds of messages about Dr. Cupid." Charlotte reassured.

"Maybe Dez doesn't know what?"

The two of them turned and saw Austin standing in front of them.

"That-"

"That Charlotte sent a message to Dr. Cupid."

"What?" Charlotte and Austin exclaimed.

"Yeah, she needed some... advice and I hope she got it. Gotta go." He smiled, "I'm sorry." He whispered and ran off with the others.

"You do know that Dez is Dr. Cupid, right?" Austin asked.

"I do." She falsely smiled, "So I don't know why I would go to my ex-boyfriend best friend for love advice like that."

"So, you were asking about me?"

"Um..." She sighed, blowing a raspberry as she did so, "Yeah? It's just, um, a lot of... dating stuff? Who knew Dez gave good advice."

"Charlotte-"

"Hey, look, we're going to missed Dez on the radio let's go."

THE GROUP finally made it to the beach club. Dez sat with DJ Sonny Smooth as they prepared to go live on the radio.

"Okay, we've got a bunch of love questions from our listeners."

"Happy to answer them."

As the questions rolled out, the audience and DJ Sonny Smooth seemed to love Dez and what he had to say.

"Wow. You know a lot about love. And goats. I bet you're quite the ladies' man." DJ Sonny Smooth smiled.

"Oh, I've never actually been in love. I haven't even dated anyone. In fact, I've never been on a date."

"Wait, so, if you've never been on a date, how can you call yourself a love expert?"

"Because I have this doctor cost that says Dr. Cupid? And this thing, and this thing."

"So, what I'm hearing is you are completely unqualified to give advice on love."

"I guess I am unqualified."

"You heard it here first, pretty babies. Dr. Cupid is a huge fraud."

That couldn't have gone any worse.

With Dez labeled as a fraud and being upset with himself, he decided right then and there he would retire Dr. Cupid as a whole.

The next day was a whirlwind for Carter Montana and Dez Wade has the redheaded teen dragged Carter everywhere as he tried to find his perfect match.

As for Charlotte... she honestly didn't know what to do with herself. She hadn't spoken to Austin and it was only because she had always brought herself back to the "why did Austin avoid me" conversation with Carter.

"You've been avoiding me." Charlotte looked up from her textbook as Austin took a seat next to her.

"I'm not. Talking to you know. If I was avoiding you I would probably stick my head in a locker."

"Is that what this is about?" Austin asked, "When we broke up?"

"Why did you avoid me? I always tried to be friends with you after we broke up and you avoided me at all cost. Why?"

Austin sighed, "Do you like Luke?"

"What? This has nothing to do with him."

"It has everything to do with him."

Charlotte sat back in her seat, crossing her arms, "I never talked to Dr. Cupid."

"What?"

"I was going to and then Carter asked me why I asked you out... then I remember how you chose to avoid me and how I let myself walk back into your life so easily." She explained, "And I sat and thought about why I let myself do that. It was because I knew I wanted you in my life. Whether we were friends or dating, it didn't matter. I missed having you around and you... didn't."

"I did!"

"You had a great way of showing it." Charlotte stood from her seat, grabbing her book, "I've gotta go."

"Charlotte, wait." Austin called, grabbing her forearm, "I was scared of change. I thought it would be easier seeing you move on without me in your life, but I think it would've been hard under any circumstance."

Charlotte sighed, "I appreciate you being honest with me, but I have every right to like who I want to whenever I want to."

"I know."

"We're friend Austin. I'm not ignoring you. I just... need to figure out what I really want."

EVERYONE SEEMED to be in a happy-go-round mood. Carter had finally spilled his guts out to Dez after the redhead dragged him all over town to find someone he may like. Dez, in return, reciprocated those feelings, went on a date with Carter, went back to being Dr. Cupid, and got Carter a goat as a sign of a new, blossoming relationship.

Trish was going to try and do long distance with her new beau and it seemed to be going just as well.

Ally... was still the same.

As for Austin and Charlotte? Well, Charlotte meant what she said, no matter what, she wanted to be friends with Austin. She stood by that and she meant it with her whole heart, but it did stop how she felt ignored... she was ignored. She was ignored by a guy she wanted to be with.

"Hey, you okay?" Carter asked.

Charlotte nodded, "Yeah, I'm fine."

"You sure?"

"Mmhmm."

"Okay... well, like I was saying, Dez then-"

She was far from fine. Of course the past was in the past, but he ignored her for something she thought was completely stupid.

Charlotte Taylor wanted to be with Austin Moon... she just didn't know if the time was right anymore.
