Chapter Twenty

"Are you sure about this (Y/N)? I think the plan could work of course but... I just don't want it to ruin anything between you and Kakashi. And I would like to remind you that Neji's feelings here are at stake..." Hinata's voice sounds as you're on your  way out of the school. You were both walking towards your car, your hand tightening around the keys. You nod, feeling some guilt creep up in you.

Your eyes find Hinata's as you give a small shrug. "I don't know what else to do. Neji did ask me out this morning and I feel guilty leaving him like that. But something has to be done. At least until December. I'll just try my best to let him down easy. But please don't mention anything to him, please." You beg Hinata, holding her hand tightly in yours. She gives you her innocent smile along with a nod. Of course she'd support you. Even if it meant breaking her cousin's heart. You weren't sure whether that made her a good person or not though. But it doesn't matter.

"So when are you going to talk to him?"

"Well asking him out today would be a bit weird, wouldn't it? Or should I just abruptly tell him that I change my mind?"

"Maybe you should tell him that you had the day to think about it and give him a reply once we arrive." Hinata says as her hand lands on the car door's handle. You nod at her words, feeling a bit uneasy about it all.

The queasiness in your stomach made you uncomfortable. The look Kakashi had when you mentioned the idea startled you. Thinking that he was probably gonna end your relationship in that instant. But he knew well that something was needed as a coverup. Maybe have Neji go to the school someday with you. Holding your hand on the way to your class or even giving a kiss if necessary. Kakashi had mentioned that he was an adult and knew the risk of what you both pursued and if you want to hold on to that attachment then something drastic was bound to happen.

But nothing goes beyond kisses. That's the line I will cross.

His words ring in your head at the memory.

"By the way... Kiba came up," you look at Hinata in the eye as you buckled your seatbelt anxiously. "He saw Kakashi and I holding hands. Not only saw, but observed. And I could tell by the look of his face how suspicious he was. Should I tell him? Also about everything with Neji? He is also my best friend." You breathe out, taking a deep breath for speaking a bit too quickly. Hinata's mouth lifted up to one side as if saying Well...

Your eyes fall down onto your lap in distaste of this all. Everything has fallen apart for you. Events behind events that you just can't seem to shake off. Hinata's soft and smooth hand lands on your hand. Her pale skin brushing against yours. "Everything is going to be fine (Y/N). High school will be over before you'll realize it and you'll be happy with Kakashi." She gives you a little squeeze as if saying I believe in you. "But my advice for Kiba is only do it if necessary. He won't take this news lightly. It's one thing be suspicious of it and another for the person to confirm it."

Once again you nod silently. Revving up the engine and quickly turning on the air conditioner. The minutes passed by in a flash during the drive. Passing by the usual happy Sakura, Naruto and Sasuke. No one would ever expect Naruto to be the third wheel. But you guessed that he barely is one since they've been friends for so long already. Before Sakura and Sasuke ever did become something else. It's become a custom to wave at them once you pass by, receiving a fellow wave from them as well.

You shift your focus on the road as you begin to make turns toward Hinata's house. The minutes were ticking by, and each one brought more of your nerves on edge. How will you even start the conversation with Neji?

Hey I take back what I said. Let's go out someday and forget the fact that I was a bitch.

     No.

     Alright.

This was your only chance to be able to stay with Kakashi. So a plan if you get rejected hasn't been set up. Taking no is not an option. Not now at least.

As much as you trust Kakashi, you really prefer him to not be in this position instead. He'd have to date a coworker from school for the news to spread around much more easily. It would definitely eat you up, especially with all of the insecurities you have. Hopefully Kakashi's maturity will keep him fine with the "relationship" you'll develop with Neji.

You come to a stop at Hinata's home and turn off the engine of the car. Glancing at Hinata nervously, you tug onto your long sleeved shirt that was covering up all of the bruises on your body as possible.

Dating after such an incident. I don't even know if I can say Challenge Accepted.

Hinata's eyes reach up to yours as she pulls her outstretched hand from the door back onto her lap. Stuttering, you say, "What? Do I enter your house? Do I lean on the car? Do I wait in front of the door for you to bring him to me? What should I do?" You bomb her with questions, realizing that you have no idea what you were doing. And that maybe this is a bad idea in general.

Your best friend gives you a nonchalant look as if saying, You're hopeless. "I'll bring him to the door. Now calm down. I'm not going to stay that he'll raise suspicion because no one would ever think something like this was going on while being asked out on a date. Now come along." Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath and exhale. Blowing away the (H/C) hair from your face. After many deep breaths, your stomach began to feel a bit better so you exit the vehicle and make your way towards the home.

Passing through the drive way felt like an eternity. It was a straight line until an abrupt curve, forming a circle with a bronze fountain in the center. The white house had many windows thanks to it being a three-story construction. There were white fences on each side of the home and from this point, you could see a stable house that you assumed was for horses. Your eyebrows shoot up a bit in surprise of how wealthy her family is but you try your best to keep your expression hidden.

Once you arrive at the door, Hinata brings out her house keys and sticks them into two keyholes. The only thing was sounding was the jingling of them and birds tweeting in the sky. Soon after, the click of the lock joined the gentle noises of the day. And the door was brought open.

Before Hinata could say anything else, her eyes widen a bit in surprise at the sight in front of her. Standing in front of you both was Neji himself and a man you don't recognize. Extremely familiar to both Neji and Hinata. The man had a stern look on his face as he stepped out of the house, barely even giving your best friend a look of a greet. Neji on the other hand gave a short bow to Hinata and soon after a brief moment of surprise at you. He had mixed emotions on his face at the sight of you but whatever he could be feeling at the moment was unclear on his face. Before he could follow the tall man's footsteps, you call out his name gently.

He quickly faces you at the sound of his name and you have the chance to study him. His hair was as it usually was but his clothes seemed very comfortable. As if he were going to practice something that required plenty of flexible movement. It was a light grey outfit that had the taste of a bit old fashion traditional clothing. Your clear your throat as you realize the staring and ignore the increasing heart beat in your chest. "Hey. I was wondering if we could speak alone for a moment?" You quickly add toward, who you were beginning to assume, Neji's father, "I promise it won't be long!"

Neji gave you an eager nod before walking to the side of the house. Before doing so, Hinata sends you a silent goodbye as she entered her home and giving you both some privacy. You could feel the stern man's look at the back of your head. Burning. "What do you need (Y/N)?" He asks sweetly. As if nothing occurred this morning.

You look into his white peculiar eyes and smile, soon looking down at the bright green grass. "I was wondering if you could ignore the response I gave you this morning and give me another shot?" You ask, not daring to look into those hypnotizing eyes again. Missing out the pleasant look of surprise on his face. The cold breeze was blowing your hair as the sun shined upon you both. Letting it's warmth comfort you.

"It's a bit difficult to ignore the reaction honestly. What changed your mind?"

"Well... it's been a hard weekend. I've been pushing away many people to not burden them with my difficulties I guess. But I don't want," you pause. Feeling your stomach tremble at the lie you were about to say. "I don't want a bad day to ruin what could possibly be having a great time. With you I mean, of course. It's alright of you don't accept, I was very rude and I apologize for my attitude--"

"Don't worry about it. I hope I can make your upcoming days much better. I promise I'll give you my one-hundred percent." His calm voice interrupts you. And guilt was slowing creeping up into your stomach at the though of possibly ruining this man simply for your own benefit. You look up to his face and see his soft smile, being very contagious to you.

Crossing your arms, you give a small glance behind you and heave a breath at the sight of the man being in the exact same position with the exact same eyes glaring at you. "He doesn't like me, does he?"

"Uncle doesn't like anyone. Don't take it personal." Neji says, causing you to turn to him. His hand lands into his pocket and he brings out a cellphone. "It wouldn't be inappropriate to ask for your number, would it?" You shake your head at his silly words and begin to tell him what he desired.

After closing his phone with a satisfied smile, you say, "So where exactly was that date going to be? And at what time?" You ask, averting your eyes away from his sweet look.

"I was hoping we could go to the annual Turkey Festival in downtown. It's not canceled since the typhoon wasn't devastating, thankfully." You suck your lips into your mouth at the thought of going to the event. Feeling a bit uneasy about it. "You can wear anything you'd like. I'm sure you'd look great in anything." Your heart warms at the compliment and you give him a quiet snicker, receiving a bigger smile from him.

"I can definitely rock any outfit. Alright. You can text me the details soon since I think your uncle is waiting for you, impatiently, if I might add. Who, by the way, I thought was your father." You mention but realize instantly that it was a mistake. His sweetness in his eyes melts away the at your words as he tried to keep his smile unwavering. But failed.

"No my father... it's quite a long story. Maybe for another time. I'll see you soon, (Y/N). Thank you for accepting." And he walks away from you. Leaving the words I'm sorry hanging in your lips.

"Bye..." you say silently. Seeing him disappear in the mist with his uncle. You bite your tongue, scolding yourself for stumbling upon a mine. Turning to your car, you begin to think that maybe this won't be bad.

But the thought washes away from your mind instantly. Of course it will be bad. Dating two great men. One for possibly love and the other for convenience.

     Forgive me, mom, dad.
