NapoWriMo 2016 Day Twenty One: Mr Smee
And now, for our prompt (optional as always!) Just as Rosa Jamila's poems often sound like they come out of a myth or fairy tale (and not always one with a happy ending), today I challenge you to write a poem in the voice of minor character from a fairy tale or myth. Instead of writing from the point of view of Cinderella, write from the point of view of the mouse who got turned into a coachman. Instead of writing from the point of view of Orpheus or Eurydice, write from the point of view of one of the shades in Hades who watched Eurydice leave and then come back. Happy writing!
Mr Smee
I know that I'm a portly man
With a bulbous red nose, from one or two dram
"He's not too clever" I've often heard them quip
But I know my way around the sea and especially this ship
Hook wouldn't have gotten here, if it wasn't for me
His faithful bo'sun, Mr Smee
The Jolly Roger, Hook's ship, but mine to steer
All through the Northern, or Southern Hemisphere
Searching for treasures, anything shiny and new
They're the kinds of things that I usually pursue
I watch this gem Wendy, walking the plank
She'll end up at the bottom where everything has sank
So I make her an offer from one human to another
I will save you from this fate if you will be my mother
The girl point blank refused
And a ferocious battle ensued
Hook trying to cut, Peter Pan's throat
I hid behind some crates that were stored on the boat
While I drank more booze
The situation did diffuse
When Hook went overboard, his life he did lose
So I'm sitting here reminiscing in my souvenir shop
I've thrown away my sword, my spy glass, and my worn out mop
I've had it with smuggling, everyone's contraband
Now I sell all the treasures that I found in Neverland
