Day Eight (June 8)

Last night was a night full of anxiety. I couldn't stop thinking about life in general. Recently we've been unable to go outside as much, it's been very reckless for our families. I guess I shouldn't complain, we should enjoy life not being sent to a concentration camp.

Suddenly, before I could even notice, someone entered my room.

Once again, it was Hanneli.

"I'm coming, I'm coming! Gosh." I mumbled, staring at the dusty wooden floor.

Hanneli turned her head and slid next to me, "I'm worried, Nannete." She sighed, "I've always thought that acting so tough all the time would remove my feelings of doom. But they're still here, tutoring me every night."

I noticed a single tear stream down her cheek. What she said surprised me. I thought that she was fearless, but I was ignorant, blind. Hanneli was just as fearful as the rest of us, she was still a child.

I reached out for a hug, "Hanneli, we're all worried. It's okay to express your feelings, not even the boldest wouldn't be afraid if they were in this situation." I sighed, "I feel you."

I noticed Hanneli try to force a smile, but deep inside the dispair we all share within us can never escape our hearts.

"Thank you." She mumbled, making her way out of my room. She certainly needed some alone time, I didn't interfere, I couldn't. Only Anne had that kind of power, the two were very close indeed.

A few minutes later, I had finished reflecting on what had happened. I decided it was time I'd make my own breakfast since most people were still tucked in bed, I just thought it would be great to take that initiative.  Unfortunately, I was unable to appreciate the sweet silence of the night. I met Bernard, laying on the dining table, no motion, no sound.

I gasped in terror, secretly hoping everything was alright. "Bernard? Stop playing games!" I began to massage his back, hoping it was just a cramp.

Bernard moaned in clear pain, "dumb exercises! How did they do it?"

"Oh great, why is Bernard so ignorant?" I thought while searching his body for any evidence, I found a bruise that was laying on his back. It was so huge that it looked like it belonged to a giants foot! I was terrified.

Next to Bernard was a magazine, it was one of those fake copies that claim to help young teenage boys ultimately get abs. The idea was so stupid I just had to cringe at such the wrong time. It was one of the copies that his old school friends used to trade, Bernard used to brag about how many of his friends had found girlfriends because of it. Of course, a real girl wouldn't find any of this attractive, is what I thought.

I chuckled, "It's so fake, dude! These exercises are for grown men, not boys." I had to look away seconds later because on the cover of the magazine was a shirtless man along with his child that looked around his age. Typical people!

Bernard screamed, passing echos throughout our home. "Shut up! I'm in pain okay? I think I broke my spine!"

As a result, our mom dashed out of her room in concern. "Please don't tell your sister to shut up and  remain calm." Her eye reached the magazine, "Bernard! Haven't I told you not to bring these home? These are disgusting, you're too young."

Bernard rolled his eyes, "Just help me, okay?"

Mom rolled up his shirt to reveal the big purple bruise plastered on his skin. Receiving an even worse reaction than I had: Mom screamed at the top of her lungs and ran into the room of the Frank couple for help.

Waking up, they returned with a white-like material to help bandage the bruise. Despite how traumatizing the bruise was, they remained calm. The Franks were naturals, especially in situations like these.

For the rest of the day people were very concerned, Bernard was treated like a prince. It's like they forgot about the whole world, he was the main focus. Sadly, only hours after could hew return back to his normal self, obnoxious and cocky.

I guess that's what I had to deal with for today.
