Chapter Thirty-six: Housemates
The hours seemed to drone as (y/n) wandered, no destination in mind. She was getting acquainted with her new habitat. Perhaps it was best to do so, especially since she had nothing else to do. She listened to her own footsteps as she walked. A smell caught her attention. It smelled very good. She followed the smell to a doorway. Light spilled from the doorway into the dark hall that the cold bodied woman had been walking down. Warmth radiated from that room. She heard the sounds of sizzling and bubbling. Tapping of metal on metal. Her floral pink and iceberg blue eyes peeked into the doorway. It was a large kitchen that was lavishly furnished with the best and most modern appliances. Clean refrigerators, shining countertops, glistening pots and pans, large ovens and an expansive stovetop.
Heat poured from the room as the icy woman looked in, movement caught her eye and she looked to see one of the twins cooking. Mei was preparing dinner by washing and chopping vegetables. His rhythmic chopping with the shining and sharp blade was masterful. It was hypnotic to watch Mei work. But, Ido was nowhere to be found. The pale skinned young woman looked around the kitchen, looking for Ido. She did not see him from where she stood in the door. However, she felt a warmth of a human near her. Looking behind her, she came face to face with the wine eyes of the maid dress wearing man.
"What are you doing here?," Ido asked as he carried bags of ingredients into the kitchen after the young woman stepped aside.
Mei looked up from his chopping to see his brother and the audience he had, he went back to working but with a more annoyed expression.
"Curious. Just wandering around.," the young woman answered honestly with a dull tone.
The young woman began to turn and walk away before she was stopped by Ido's voice, "You cannot eat food that is above a certain temperature, correct?"
"That is correct.," the young woman spoke, "If I do, my core temperature will rise."
The wine haired man nodded and went back to work. Neither Ido nor Mei acknowledged her after that, but she could tell Mei was fully aware of her being there, he had positioned himself to keep (y/n) in the corner of his eye as he worked. The blue and pink haired young woman continued down the dark hallway that she wandered into. Mindlessly, she wandered further and further into the large building. She had no idea where she was or what the rooms were for.
The walls and carpets had changed drastically, instead of being a cozy home style, it was sterile, cold, empty. (Y/n) had a feeling that was not supposed to be down that way and turned back. There was something in the back of her mind telling her that it was dangerous there, that she had been there before and needed to get away quickly. Turning back, she walked back down the hall to the light of the kitchen. Her eyes looked back into the kitchen to see Ido and Mei still at work. The twins were skilled with their cooking techniques as much as their fighting techniques. It was beautiful in the way they moved.
(Y/n) hid in the doorway and watched them work. Smooth rhythmic movements and skillful techniques drew in her attention to them. She felt a bit of pain from being so close to heat, yet it was not as painful as before. The icy woman was still scared of the two, yet her fear was pushed back a little by the pure elegance of their techniques. She could almost forget that they were hired hit men and killers with a high body count. A feeling in her chest reminded her of something she felt a long time ago and what she had been feeling at Nanba prison. The thought if that feeling was pushed aside as she continued to watch the twins. She saw Mei turn to her, his movement caught by Ido and both looked at her.
"If you are going to be there, at least be somewhat useful.," Mei said in a sharp tone, "Chill that bowl of water over there so I can blanch this."
The icy woman stepped into the hot kitchen and walked to the bowl that Mei motioned to. She felt the water was warmer than needed and touched the side of the bowl, the water cooled to almost freezing after she touched the bowl. Mei had her move aside and he dropped the vegetables he had been cooking in the water. (Y/n) was looking at the water as Mei went back to work. The vegetables looked beautiful. Perfectly cooked and vibrant in their colors.
"Yuki, blanch these for me once they are finished cooking.," Ido spoke to her.
The young woman got another bowl and filled it with water that she chilled with her power. She did not argue with them using her nickname. It felt a bit dangerous to argue with them about that.
The young woman scrubbed her hands at the sink in the corner of the kitchen and dried them off before holding something that Ido handed her.
"Keep this cool for a minute.," the wine haired man ordered. His boots tapped on the floor as he went back to his station and finished his prep.
He waved the young woman over, "bring it here." (Y/n) obeyed and handed Ido the cooled food item.
He did not tell her to go away as he sliced and peeled the item with precision, making a beautiful flower. He plated the edible flower decoration on the plate with the rest of the elaborate dish. It looked so good.
'Wow, they are really good at this. This looks delicious. Rock would love this.,' the young woman thought as she looked at the food.
She felt a rumbling in her gut as her stomach growled, she had not eaten at all. She was hungry still.
"Dinner will be done in a few minutes. Please go to the dining room.," Ido spoke. His request felt more like a veiled order.
(Y/n) turned to him, a little embarrassed that her stomach growled, "Dining room?"
"Down the hall as you go back to the main room. Second door on the left.," Ido replied, "Unless you want to skip dinner again."
"Just go already, you dumb bitch.," Mei snapped.
The angrier brother's outburst scared the young woman a bit and she left quickly. The device on her back whirred loudly as it compensated for the heat she was near, cooling her body back to a safer temperature.
She walked quickly down the hall, 'I don't like this place. Why Did you want me back here, Shiro?'
She remembered what Isou told her, her threatening him. Serious threats. Did they think they could use her for dangerous missions or as a killer for them? She shivered after thinking of those horrible possibilities. Her pace slowed as she saw one of the others in the house walking towards her, the tall tan man, Fourth. He was wearing a nice suit still and his dark brown hair was tied back in a long ponytail. He saw the icy woman before him and slowed down as well, stopping in front of the dining room door.
"Please, go ahead.," He spoke politely and motioned for (y/n) to walk in with his hand. The blue and pink haired young woman nodded nervously and cautiously walked by him, her device still whirring. In the room was a large table, set for the inhabitants of the building. The Blond young man with the spider legs growing from his head was already in there with the teenager with choppy bangs.
(Y/n) looked at the different seats, wondering if it was okay to choose one or if there were arraignments.
"Your boyfriend sits on the end over there.," the indigo haired teen said and pointed to the seat, "you can take his spot or the one next to it."
The blue and pink haired young woman gave a silent nod and sat in the seat next to Kojiro's. She folded her hands in front of her and laid them on the table. Her blue and pink eyes stared at her fingers and listened to the hum of her device. She heard the clanking and scraping of a metal object against the floor, she did not look up. The sound got closer and closer, a large blue object came into her peripheral vision and the seat beside her was moved.
"Ah Yuki, Ikkaku usually sits there. But, I guess you can sit between us tonight.," the cheery voice of her old friend greeted her, "Where did you wander off to? I was worried."
"I was exploring.," the icy woman replied and looked to her friend as he sat down in his seat.
The friendly smile gave her some comfort when looking at her friend's face. A face so different, yet so the same from when she saw him during their torment.
"Kojiro, there is also the issue of where she is going to stay. Her room has not yet been prepared.," the dark haired gentleman spoke and sat down in his own chair.
Fourth seemed to be waiting for someone, probably that woman that he was with before. Wasn't her name Kujaku? The cold bodied therapist sighed a bit and leaned back in her chair, looking to the bare ceiling. Just two days ago, she was at Nanba. She was with those silly inmates that she had grown so fond of. (Y/n) remembered how much she loved those young men, this inmates who made her life that much more rich. Her eyes closed as she thought about them. How were they? How was cell 13? The building five inmates and guards?
"There is no issue, she can stay with me.," (y/n) heard Kojiro speak back to Fourth as he put his arm around her.
His warmth still did not burn her. She felt a bit comforted by her old friend's presence. (Y/n) felt a bit happy to be by him again. The cold bodied woman opened her eyes and looked over to the young man beside her. He was smiling widely as he was talking to the other ones sitting at the dinner table.
She felt warm in such a scary place. She heard the chair on her other side be moved and looked over to see Ikkaku sit down. He was covered in bandages. His pink eyes looked over to the pink and blue eyes of the icy woman beside him.
His handsome face had a blank expression before he finally spoke in the quieted room, "I'm sorry, for electrocuting you."
(Y/n) looked at the man beside her before giving him a smile, "I forgave you already. I blame the uppers for making you and the others fight."
"I told you, Ikkaku, Yuki does not blame you. Now we can all be friends!," the excited shark like man beside the cold woman cheered and raised his cup of alcohol to the blond man. Ikkaku raised his own sake cup to his friend with a small smile. Both drank from their cups.
"Alcoholics, the both of you.," sighed and covered her ears from the loud laughter coming Kojiro.
"We're handsome alcoholics!," The blue haired man laughed and leaned his head against the cold woman's.
"Get a room.," the indigo haired teen grumbled.
The shark like man ignored the ornery teen and nuzzled his old friend's head. His nose brushed against her soft hair and his hot breath warmed her scalp. (Y/n) felt her cheeks warm a bit. It was like they were kids again. Those moments she wished she could go back to, Where neither of them had to worry about the hell that they went through. The same hell that now captured them.
Her eyes cut over to Ikkaku, who was watching the two intently. The blond man sipped his alcohol and looked away from the two beside him with the small smile on his lips being hidden behind his cup.
Mei and Ido brought the food in. A beautiful selection that was expertly made for the people at the table. Everyone seemed to be delighted at the craftsmanship that the two had in the cut and positions vegetables and meats.
Ikkaku silently scoffed, "No alligator meat again."
"What are you bitching about this time, punk?!," Mei shouted.
The volume of Mei's voice made the icy young woman cling to Kojiro, who did the same in turn. The arguments and banter continued into dinner and into the night. (Y/n) ate calmly and carefully, answering questions that were sent to her with as much reservations as possible. Most of the questions came from Kujaku, trying to learn about her and asking about clothing preferences.
Kojiro laughed and joked with those who felt like it. Ikkaku kept drinking and began to loosen up a bit to talk. It felt like eating with the inmates in nanbaka again. She could almost feel the others with her. But she only saw these people who worked with Elf. Her heart hurt from knowing that she would probably never see anyone from nanbaka again.
She finished her meal and waited for others to do the same before helping to clean up. Kojiro was laughing and talking with Ikkaku drunkenly while she did so. Mei gave her a harsh side eye before taking letting her follow him and his twin back to the kitchen. They were about to start washing the dishes in warm water when they heard the clear voice from their new housemate.
"Thank you for dinner.," the pink and blue haired girl said, "It was delicious."
For a split second, she thought she saw Ido make a smile. She gave them a bow and left to find Kojiro.
The shark like young man was snickering while talking to Ikkaku, the two seemingly discussing the patterns that Ikkaku was doodling.
"What are you two up to?," (y/n) asked and sat down beside them.
"Yuki! I asked Ikkaku to design a tattoo for you if you want one!," Kojiro laughed, "Were trying to think of what'd be best for you!"
"But I don't want one?," the young woman inquired while raising an eyebrow.
"That's why he said 'if', Yuki.," Ikkaku shot at the blue and pink haired girl, obviously more irritable from his inebreation, "Also, where's the melon soda you promised, Huh?!"
(Y/n) could feel the sparking energy coming off of him. He was trying to scare her again.
"Good question.," the girl replied and shrugged, "I had all the ingredients back in my office, but oh well."
She looked at the irritated blond man with a teasing expression. This only seemed to rile up the electrified man even more. Kojiro grinned as he looked between them, happy to see the two he was closest to conversing in front of him.
"For a second there, I was worried you two would not get along, but I guess you two are already pretty close.," The yellow eyed man smiled and took another sip of his drink.
"What the hell are you talking about?!," the pink eyed Ikkaku demanded, "I'm not friends with this bitch!"
(Y/n) only made a sly smile at the much bigger electrically charged man, "Oh really? Then why are you using the nickname that is only used for friends?"
This caused a chain reaction of the two arguing while Kojiro watched with a pleased look. She felt Kojiro's warm hand upon her head as she was silenced by that sudden motion. Ikkaku and Kojiro finished their drinks, their cheeks were pink from inebreation. The shark like man held onto his chilly friend as she supported him from falling over.
"I think you've had enough, Shiro.," the icy young woman said while holding him.
He did not seem to hear her as he became more deadweight in her arms. Ikkaku had gotten quiet as he continued to make messier doodles. (Y/n) felt like a bit of nostalgia while holding her old friend this way, like they were young again. She did not hear one of the maid dress wearing twins approach her from behind. It was only after feeling the heat of the man, did she turn around.
It was Ido. His face was as cold as ever. Yet she could have sworn to have seen some light in those otherwise darkened eyes.
"Kojiro is out again? I'll show you to his room.," the wine haired man said and motioned to the blue and pink haired lady to follow.
(Y/n) cautiously followed him, only wanting to put her drunken friend to bed. Her mind then though if another question, where would she sleep? Sure her old friend gave her permission to stay with him, but that took away privacy from both. That would not be suitable for long term... She shook her head as soon as she realized she was thinking of staying with these people.
She needed to return home to Nanba prison.
Delicate and gentle footsteps followed heavier ones as Ido led (y/n) deeper into the house. She was quiet as she plotted her next course of action. She needed to get out of that house, but it looked more and more impossible as she studied these housemates further. There was little chance that she would be let go willingly. Especially if Elf deemed her interesting enough to continue 'playing' with. This made her both discouraged and encouraged to escape from this house faster.
Ido finally stopped before a room and opened the door for her. It was a decent sized room with a shark theme to it. Even the mirror appeared to look like a shark's mouth.
"This is Kojiro's room.," the maid dress wearing man said in a monotone voice.
(Y/n) gave him a small nod, "Thank you."
She could feel him watch her as she tried to put Kojiro down on the bed as gently as possible. The room turned dark as the hallway door was shut, trapping her in with her friend. The icy woman was more concerned about Kojiro, as he would more than likely have a hangover the next morning.
'Shiro has changed so much. And yet he's still the same good natured young man I've always known.,' She thought.
The young woman rolled him over to make sure he wouldn't asperate and laid on the floor to not disturb him while he slept. A decision she regretted the next morning when Kojiro tripped over her and fell on top of her.
