Chapter four: Shiro
The cold wind whipped around a young woman, her hair was tied up by a bow that resembled a flower. She had on a shirt and skirt with legging underneath. The cold did not seem to bother her, she had already finished her homeschooling studies and decided she wanted to look around the area she moved to with her parents after they were transferred there. Her shoes tapped on the pavement as she made her way by a school, it was a sports based school and there were students out on the field practicing. One in particular caught her eye, a tall muscular boy with blue hair and Yellow eyes.
He was running laps with his friends as other onlookers were cheering.
He ran until it was time for him to take a break after the coach blew the whistle. The handsome blue haired male took his water bottle and sat down next to the fence, he got many compliments and high fives. The young man was finally left alone and he took a long drink from his water. He turned around and looked right at (y/n). The blue haired boy looked surprised. His eyes widened and his yellow irises looked right at her.
He was silent for a bit before smiling, "Hi there! I've never seen you around before, are you new here?"
The young yukinohana nodded her head and clutched the strap of her purse, the young man's presence felt warm. She was not allowed to be near warmth because of her illness.
"My name is Shiro. Nice to meet you.," the boy said and held out his hand to her, "What is your name?"
The female's heart started to beat faster, she hesitated and put her hand up to his on the fence. His hand was larger than hers and very warm.
"Wow, you're freezing. Come on, come inside so you can warm up.," He said with a smile, "I can ask the coach of you can stay."
"No. I am fine, the snow does not bother me.," (y/n) replied in a cold monotone.
"How about we go to a cafe or the arcade? It will be fun!," the boy said with a large grin.
He made her feel warm. Her cheeks were warm.
But it did not hurt like the other warmth did.
"Why are you acting so nice?," the young woman asked Shiro.
He looked down at her with a bit of a puzzled expression, "Why not? We're friends now."
"Friends?," the female asked.
His wide smile with his eyes closed made him look sweet, "Yep, you are my new friend! And we are going to have fun this afternoon!"
He looked behind him at the other boys who were calling his name and called back to them before turning to where the female used to be standing.
"Was that a snow spirit?," he asked himself, "She was cute."
(Y/n) walked down the street of the town she moved to, the smells of the restaurants and street food vendors made her stomach growl. They were all selling hot food though.
She heard yelling.
"Hey wait up!"
She turned and saw it was the boy from earlier, his cheeks and nose were pink from the cold. He still had that smile of his on.
"Hi again! I found you!," the bubbly boy said and stood next to the cold female, "Ready to have some fun?"
(Y/n) looked up at him with uninterested eyes, his own bright ones looked down at her.
"Why are you so determined to talk to me?," (y/n) asked, "I have nothing to give you."
"That is where you are wrong," Shiro smiled, "Your friendship and company. Plus a little bit of happiness."
The pale woman looked down as her cheeks went pink, she never talked to a boy like this. He was so friendly and the only boy she had talked to outside of family.
"I never got your name.," he said, "May I know your name?"
(Y/n) looked back up into those eyes, they used to be frightening eyes but now looked friendly.
"(Y/n) Yukinohana.," the cold bodied teenage girl said and her hand caught by his.
He gripped her hand gently, "How about I call you Yuki? You are pretty like the freshly fallen snow."
His hand was so warm. He was warm.
"How about I show you around?,"Shiro offered, "You are new here after all."
The young woman nodded and followed him through the town, he was showing her all of the best places he knew.
"How about we go inside the cafe and warm up Yuki?," the young man asked, "We can get something to eat."
(Y/n) shook her head and that made him puzzled, "Why not?"
"I can't get warm, I'd get sick.," the female answered, "I have a condition that hurts me if I am in the heat."
"Really? That is unusual.," Shiro said and continued to hold her hand, "We can still go into the cafe, you can get something cold."
She nodded in agreement and went to the cafe with him.
Every day afterward, she would go see Shiro after his school was finished and talk with him. His friendliness melted the coldness that she had and made her a more kind individual. He would even invite her to go out on weekends with his friends and have study sessions with her. (Y/n) felt happy with him and invited him to come to dinner with her parents one night, he actually accepted. Her mother and father liked him and teased him a little, he playfully responded with his own innocent jokes.
"So how did you two meet?," (y/n)'s father asked.
Shiro grinned, "Yuki was watching us practice at school, the school I go to is a sports based one, I saw her and wanted to say hello."
"I tried to get away but this persistent puppy-shark followed me.," (y/n) added and poked his rib with her elbow causing the male to laugh, "He was kind enough to offer to show me some fun places here. That arcade was really fun."
"(Y/n) does seem happier after she met you. She was always a lonely person, our family's genetic condition causes us to not be able to be out in society like others.," (y/n)'s mother explained, "We will probably have to move to a colder country once spring warms the land. But I am glad that my daughter was able to meet you."
"I was happy to meet her as well, she is quite fun to be with.," Shiro laughed, "When I first saw her, I thought she could have been a snow spirit."
(Y/n)'s parents laughed and the young woman hid her face in the scarf she wore.
Shiro met with her to have a Christmas party with his friends, it was so much fun. All of the stories and decorations. The food was delicious and the karaoke was great to do.
It came time for the gifts to be passed around, (y/n) clutched at the bag she brought and all the handmade gifts she had in it. She watched as the boys all traded their gifts and laugh at the silly gag gifts.
"Hey Yukino-san, what do you have there?," one of the boys asked and the guys all crowded around her, "is it something for us?"
"I-I made some homemade candies for you.," (y/n) stuttered out and gave the boxes of candy to the males who were all clamoring about the texture and flavors.
Shiro was the last one, he looked puzzled when she gave him a bigger box than the others.
"For me?," he asked and opened it. A small shark doll and a handmade medallion half was inside.
"Woah, did you make this?," he asked and picked up the doll, "so cool!"
"Yes and the medallion," (y/n) replied and held up the half she was wearing, "It's a friendship medallion, to celebrate our friendship."
"Yuki.," Shiro was not smiling, "You made this for me?"
(Y/n) nodded, "you are my best and only friend I ever had. I wanted to celebrate that."
She felt warm as Shiro embraced her, his muscular body was much warmer than hers but it did not burn like others did.
"Thank you Yuki.," Shiro smiled the best smile ever, "That means more than the entire world."
Spring had come and the days were getting warmer.
Shiro was walking to school with (y/n) following him, "The cherry trees will be blooming soon. It will be so beautiful."
"I bet it will be.," (y/n) said with a smile and watched Shiro get surprised by some of his friends.
She waved to him as he ran with his friends up to the school as the bell sounded, "Cherry blossoms... what are they like?"
The young woman looked to the trees that had buds on them and smiled, "they sound beautiful."
She walked home to go back to her home school studies and wait for Shiro to get out of class.
Saturday rolled around and Shiro took (y/n) to explore the new look of the town.
She was amazed at the beauty of the blooms and tried to catch as many petals as she could manage. She threw the petals at him after he teased her for acting like a child.
Both of them were laughing as they were covered in petals as they continued to walk around. The street food sellers were still out there and Shiro had the idea of having (y/n) try something. He pointed her to a stand and bought some things there, a small fish shaped pastry and one that looked like a stuffed pancake.
"What are these?,"(y/n) asked.
"Doraiyaki and Taiyaki.," Shiro answered, "They are sweet pastry filled with red bean paste. I think you would like them."
He gave her the Taiyaki and took a bite of the doraiyaki, she took a bite and found the little fish shaped pastry good.
The blue haired male held his doraiyaki out to her, "Try a bite of this."
(Y/n) took a bite and found it was also delicious, the red bean filling was sweet with a little savoriness to it.
"This is amazing!," she said, "Is this filling always this good?"
Shiro smiled and took a bite of his food again with a nod.
He found one of her favorite foods, adzuki bean paste.
"Sharky, this is fun.," (y/n) said with a smile, "Thank you."
The yellow irises of her male friend shimmered, "You are welcome, Yuki."
"Want to go play some games in the arcade? I think I see your friends over there!," the female said with her own smile on her pink lips. Her pink lips matched the cherry blossoms on the trees.
Shiro laughed, "sure thing! Let's go beat the highscores!"
Both ran to the arcade together after they finished their snacks, hand in hand.
The boys in the arcade were surprised and happy to see their friends, they all spent the day playing games together in a carefree manner. Afterwards they got ice cream, (y/n) getting some adzuki beans in hers while Shiro got one that was awamori flavored.
"Dude, I think you'll be an alcoholic when you are out of school.," one of Shiro's friends teased.
"At least I am a handsome alcoholic.," he shot back.
That was when (y/n) learned his love for awamori because it reminded him of his home in Okinawa.
Shiro waited outside (y/n)'s house to walk with her again to school, her mother answered the door.
"Oh shiro, I am sorry. She overheated and is now sick.," her mother explained, "please understand."
"It was my fault, Yukinohana oka-san.," Shiro said, "I did not keep track of how long we were playing in the sun."
"You can come by this afternoon for tea and to study with her for your exams.," the mother offered with a smile, "She'll be happy to see you."
"I sure will. Tell her that I hope she gets better soon!," Shiro said and ran off while waving at the older woman happily.
"Oh that boy, reminds me of my husband when we were younger.," she said and returned inside to take care of her daughter.
Shiro was giddy all day. He was going to surprise his friend with a gift he made for her.
It was in his bag as he walked home with his friends. They were crossing a bridge the ran over a train track.
"Hey, shiro! I bet you can't balance up there!," One of his friends said.
Childishly, he took the dare and jumped right up.
"This is easy!", he laughed with his back to his friends, "And the view is great! So awesome!"
He felt a hand on his back...
