prom

BIG TIME PROM KINGS

GABRIELA USUALLY kept her cool when walking down towards the lobby, but today was different.

She had her earbuds in her ear and she danced her way down and out of the lobby.

She felt someone grab her wrist and she turned seeing James.

She pulled her earbuds out and smiled, "Hey."

He placed the crown on her head and smiled.

Gabriela didn't know what it was but recently James had tried in every aspect to go on at least one date with her and why wouldn't prom be the perfect time to ask.

She flicked her eyes up and saw the crown that was placed on her head.

"This has some weight to it." She said.

"Because it's not cardboard." James said.

The three others stood behind Gabriela waiting to see what was going to happen.

"Are you going to prom?" He asked.

"I don't think so." She said, "Sorry, James."

She placed the crown back on his head and turned, but she was blocked by the others.

"What?" She questioned.

Carlos grabbed her shoulder and gently shook her, "Are you out of your mind? The dress from the night you didn't walk the carpet. You can wear that."

She held Carlos' forearms and held her hands there, his hands still on her shoulders.

"I don't wanna go. Everyone is gonna have a good time, but I think I'm gonna sit this one out."

Removing Carlos from her shoulders she made her way towards the exit.

"You could win prom queen!" James shouted, "People actually like you."

The boys began to agree at once.

She turned and faced them again, "Have fun at prom."

With that, she left.

"Oh, we're making her go to prom."

GABRIELA STOOD in line at the park for a smoothie.

While standing in line the four boys looked at her.

"The logical thing to do here is to get either James or Logan to ask her to prom." Carlos said, "Maybe she likes grand gestures."

"I wouldn't think so." Kendall said.

"Well if Logan is trying to get Camille back it's best if James tries and get Gabriela to go to prom." Carlos added.

James took a breath and approached Gabriela.

As soon as she turned around, smoothie in hand, she faced James.

"Hey."

James became nervous. James Diamond was nervous. He couldn't even believe it.

He wiped his hands on his pants, "I know you said you weren't planning on going to prom, but I would like to ask you to be my date... so, will you be my date to prom?"

The others watched from a distance as Gabriela spoke to James, it looked like she was speaking a mile a minute.

James finally turned around and made his way back to the boys.

"What she say?" Carlos asked.

"She still said no." He answered, "But she did say she would hangout, one on one, with me another time. It's basically a date." He smiled.

Kendall scoffed, "I get one on one time with her to and it's not a date."

"Because you have a girlfriend." James argued.

"Look," Carlos said, "we all know how nice Gabriela is, and we were right she's a likable person who probably would win prom queen, but if that's the reason we're trying to get her to go... we should stop."

The boys grew silent. They were taking in what Carlos had said because it was true, if the only reason they were trying to get Gabriela to go to prom was to win prom queen and have one of them have the high chance of winning prom king was wrong, no doubt.

"Just like any other girl, Gabriela should have the time of her life a prom." Carlos said, "No more asking her to go."

The boys came to the agreement and split off to find, and or get, their own dates.

HOURS HAD passed and Gabriela sat on her loveseat eating a tub of ice cream.

She looked over at the same white dress that Carlos pointed out the night she was supposed to walk the red carpet with Kendall.

She sighed and stood up. She grabbed the dress and put it on.

She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled.

That quickly dropped as someone knocked on her door. She grabbed the quite large blanket off the loveseat and wrapped it around her shoulders.

She opened the door and saw Kendall and Jo smiling.

"Hey." Gabriela said, "You two look nice."

"Thank you." Jo said, "Kendall told me you weren't going to prom."

"Yeah."

Gabriela didn't know what to say anymore.

"Well, we just came by to see if you've changed your mind and tag along with us."

"Thanks for stopping by, but I think I'm gonna stick with my movie and ice cream but you two have a great night and I hope you two win prom king and queen."

The two waved goodbye and Gabriela quickly shut the door.

She pressed her back against the door for a moment and threw the blanket off of her body.

Another few moments passed and Gabriela decided that of course in support, that she would go to prom and vote for prom king and queen.

She sat down on the loveseat as she put on a pair of white sneakers that matched the dress and headed towards the Palm Woods prom.

She went in unnoticed and made her way towards the voting table and that's when she paused. She didn't know who she would vote for.

Obviously, each of the four boys wanted to be prom king, but she could only write one name down.

Hearing Carlos run past her, he took notice and ran back. The Jennifer's continued running off.

"Hey, you came." He smiled.

"Just here to vote."

She looked back on the paper and sighed, she finally wrote a name down and put her vote in the box.

She looked at Carlos and smiled.

"Who'd you vote for?" He asked.

"Logan and Camille. I think he might like her so I'm only pushing it on."

She walked around the table and stood beside Carlos, "You should stay." He said.

Looking past a nervous Jo, Kendall looked over and saw Gabriela and Carlos talking to each other.

He sent her a small wave, she glanced over and sent a small smile and a wave back.

She brought her attention back to Carlos, "I'm not staying."

"Come on." He pouted, "Stay long enough to hear who wins. Could be you."

"It's not gonna be me."

"You never know, besides you've already got the dress on. You told me the dress would come in handy and look at you, looking nice as always, you can stay and be my friend date." Carlos said.

She rested her hand on his shoulder, "It's almost time to announce prom king and queen. But first, it's time to slow things down. Grab that special someone-"

"Not too tight."

"and slow dance."

Taking her hand, Carlos dragged Gabriela onto the dance floor.

Looking out of the crowd Kendall and Jo looked at the group of teens dancing.

"Hey, when did Gabriela get here?" Jo asked.

Trying to find her in the crowd, Kendall finally spotted her dancing with Carlos, laughing at who knows what.

But, she looked like she was having a great time and as Carlos said, she deserved to have a great time like any other girl there.

"Kendall."

Taking his eyes off Gabriela he faced Jo.

He didn't even realize that he was staring, "Sorry, I was thinking. She came in not that long ago." He answered.

Jo nodded.

The two of them started their own conversation and before they could get up and dance, Jo's dad took them both away.

"Okay, now it's time to announce the prom king and queen." Gustavo said.

No answer came out of either Kelly or Gustavo as they, what looked like, bricked back and forth.

Soon, the Jennifer's ran past and found Carlos, he couldn't even explain to Gabriela what had happened, he just ran off.

"And your prom king and queen are..."

Soon a bright spotlight beamed down on Gabriela, but she was alone.

The crowd faced her, but what was she supposed to do, she had no one else to walk up with her.

"Gabriela Machado..." Gustavo trailed off, "solo prom queen?"

She shut her eyes for a moment and walked towards the stage, Kelly bending down to place the crown on her head.

Gabriela turned around, the group of teens applauding for her, she faced the exit, but first, she grabbed the crown for the king and left prom altogether.

She found out who won and that was the reason she went in the first place.

Making it back to the Palm Woods she stood by the pool. She took her shoes off and dipped her feet into the water.

She didn't think she was gonna win, to her, prom was based on popularity, if anything she would've put money on Jo and Kendall winning.

That obviously didn't happen. She felt sorta embarrassed, she felt like it was a joke almost.

She had to walk towards the stage solo. If Carlos was standing beside her for at least another minute, they would've won and she wouldn't have felt embarrassed at all, she probably would've felt a ton of adrenaline.

Knocking on the door, he heard no response. Kendall didn't know what it was but it had gotten some type of adrenaline from Jo's dad, along with his apparent CIA friends, kicking him out of prom.

He needed to do something to get rid of his "adrenaline" so he looked for Gabriela as the others were at prom was a must.

Speeding through the lobby, he peaked and saw Gabriela with her feet in the pool.

He approached her, struggling to take his own shoes off, and sat down beside her.

"I see you won prom queen." He smiled.

"Yeah." She muttered, "Fun to say the least."

Kendall looked down at her hands, she was fumbling with the prom king crown.

"You know, it could be worse."

Gabriela looked at him, "I know. I just didn't like that I had to go get the crown alone."

Kendall nodded, "You could be could've tripped while walking up there."

Gabriela nodded, "Or you could be soaking wet." He said as he splashed her with the pool water.

Letting out a breathy laugh, Gabriela splashed him back.

Repeating his same actions, the two of them continuously splashing each other.

And somehow, someway, Gabriela ended up in the pool.

Popping her head out of the water, she brushed her wet hair back and out of her face.

"That's not fair." Gabriela sputtered.

"I am so sorry." Kendall said.

He held his hand out for her to grab and as she did, she acted on revenge and pulled him into the pool.

Gabriela's laugh was something else. Kendall enjoyed it, he enjoyed every second he was with Gabriela. He liked her.

After a few moments of just looking at each other, Gabriela swam towards the edge of the pool and grabbed the crown.

Swimming back over she placed it on his head, "You know, Jo looked nice tonight." Gabriela said.

Jo. Jo his girlfriend. Yes, Jo.

As she floated off, Kendall slowly turned, eyes following Gabriela's movements.

"Yeah, yeah she did." Kendall said.

Gabriela continued to float around the pool, "How much trouble did she get in?"

"More than what we would've thought."

Gabriela wiped her hands over her face, she looked down and saw her makeup wiping off.

"I talked to my friend." Kendall said.

"Oh, what happened?"

"He- he's still confused." He started, "He still really likes his girlfriend but he really, really likes the not so new girl."

Gabriela swam close to Kendall and sighed.

"Are you sure I don't know this person?"

"I'm positive."

"Put yourself in your friends shoes." Gabriela said, "Just close your eyes and think."

As he closed his eyes she did the same, but she was relaxed.

The same thought process over and over again. He knew he liked Jo but he also knew he liked Gabriela, it wasn't like he flip flopped between liking one, one day and another the next day.

He couldn't make a pros and cons list. What would be the point of making a pros and cons list?

He opened his eyes and looked over at Gabriela, "What would you do?" He asked.

"I would go with my heart. Like I said, if my boyfriend liked another girl, I would let my boyfriend date the other girl." Gabriela said, "Would I be sad? Yes. Would it take time to "get over him"? Yes, but obviously I wouldn't want to drag a relationship on if he liked someone else."

She swam towards the pools edge and got out, Kendall following suit.

She pushed the crown more on his head.

"Sometimes there's a sign to move on and other times you've got to go with what your heart wants."

The wind began to pick up and Gabriela sighed, "It's getting late, I'll see you tomorrow Kendall."

With that she left, Kendall watching her leave.

He removed the crown from his head and held it in his hands.
