Author's POV:
"Natsu, how many times do I have to tell you to not touch my guitar?" Lucy asked. Natsu was her best friend and he had always been there for her ever since they met. The only problem was his tendency to meddle with Lucy's belongings. Actually, he liked to meddle with everyone's belongings.
"Can I hear you play, Lucy?" Natsu begged as he brought the guitar to her. They were currently in Lucy's room, studying for an exam coming up tomorrow. Or so they were. Natsu always liked the way Lucy played her guitar. If he got lucky, he could hear her sing too.
"Fine, but after that, we have to study, okay?" Natsu nodded and Lucy grabbed the guitar from him. The both of them sat on the bed and Lucy strummed her guitar. The tune was perfect. It was gentle, yet powerful at the same time. There were literally no words to describe it. It was flawless.
As Lucy kept on playing her guitar, Natsu felt like time was moving backwards. He remembered the time when he figured out that Lucy was a guitarist. It was sixth grade in middle school and Lucy was a new student. She was shy, quiet, and didn't like to make new friends. When Natsu saw her for the first time, he knew he wanted to be friends with her. It was the beginning of lunch...
~FLASHBACK~
"Hi, I'm Natsu! What's your name?" Eleven-year-old Natsu asked. A blonde girl squeaked when asked what her name was. She wasn't exactly a social butterfly. In fact, she preferred to be alone.
"M-My name is L-Lucy," she stuttered. Natsu smiled, revealing how toothy his teeth were. He sat across from Lucy, making her feel uncomfortable. She never had someone sit with her during lunch. It was a strange feeling.
"You have a pretty name. My name is kind of weird." Lucy couldn't help, but blush at the heartwarming compliment. It was rare for her to receive compliments since nobody made an attempt to get to know her. Even if she did prefer to be alone, it made her day to know that someone actually talked to her.
"I-I think your name is cool. Don't change it," Lucy said. Natsu was surprised. Most of the time, people would comment how his name was weird. He would get teased all the time and people would start giving him nicknames that he didn't like. He found it odd that someone liked his name.
"You're a really nice person. Do you... maybe... I don't know... want to be friends?" Natsu asked shyly. Lucy's eyes shimmered as she formed a small smile. She always wanted to know what it's like to have a friend. She least expected it to be a boy, however.
"Sure, but what do friends do exactly?" Lucy asked. Natsu scratched his head. For an outgoing guy, he doesn't really know the first thing about friends. He thought friends were just people who could talk about anything.
"I don't really know. My mom says that she would always walk with her best friend home. Something about a play date, I think?" This time, it was Lucy's turn to scratch her head. Instantly, she remembered something and gasped.
"I hear people talk about it all the time! There was this one girl who said she got to hang out with her best friend at her house." Natsu cheered at the idea of hanging out with Lucy. He's actually looking forward to it.
"Great! Let's walk to my house after school!" Natsu said ecstatically. Lucy nodded and the bell rang, signaling every student to go to their next class.
"What class do you have next?" Lucy asked.
"I have science next. What about you?" Lucy squealed in delight, which caused Natsu's ears to go deaf.
"I have science too!" Lucy exclaimed. With a smile on his face, Natsu grabbed Lucy's hand and together, they ran to their designated class.
~TIME SKIP~
"I'm glad science is over. The teacher is so boring," Natsu said.
"Hey, don't be mean to the teacher. It's not nice," Lucy defended. It was the end of school and everyone started going home. Some walked with their friends, while others got a ride.
"Come on, Lucy. I think my dad's at work, so my mom should be at home." Lucy nodded and together, they walked all the way to Natsu's house. During the walk, the both of them were casually talking about their interests and a little of their past. They learned some interesting facts about each other that nobody would've known.
They arrived at Natsu's house and it was a little bigger than what Lucy pictured. It was a two story house with a balcony on the second floor. The style was modern and the walls were painted white. When Natsu rang the doorbell, it took about five seconds until someone opened the door.
"Hi, Natsu. Who's your friend next to you?" A blue-haired woman asked. Lucy couldn't help, but stare at her in awe. For being in her mid thirties, she looked really young. Not to mention how beautiful she was. She could tell that she's a very kind lady by just looking at her eyes.
"Mom, this is Lucy. She's a new student and I decided to become her friend!" The woman looked at Lucy and gave her a welcoming smile. She gestured the two children to come in and Lucy couldn't help, but be astonished by the interior decorating. Everything looked expensive from the crystal chandelier to the silverware itself.
"Wow... This place looks amazing!" Lucy commented. Natsu nodded his head and dragged Lucy all the way up to his room. They went up the stairs and passed what looked like a very old office. Natsu opened his bedroom door and gestured for Lucy to come in. She was surprised. Normally, a guy's room is always messy. However, Natsu has a very clean and organized room.
"What do you think?" Natsu asked. Lucy was so amazed by his room that she couldn't speak. She looked around and found a guitar sitting there all by itself against the corner. Her first instinct was to play it, but she then realized that this isn't her room. Natsu could sense that Lucy wanted to see the guitar and handed it to her.
"I-I was just looking at it. Y-You don't have to give it to me." Natsu opened Lucy's hand and gave her the guitar. She admired the beautiful instrument and grinned.
"Can you play?" Natsu asked. Lucy nodded and positioned herself to play the guitar. She took a deep breath and delicately strummed the strings. The music was simple, but Natsu thought it was elegant. He couldn't help, but have a smile plastered on his face. He could feel the music touch his soul as the music kept on going and going. Lucy wasn't aware of what's going on. She was too busy playing the guitar. As the song came to an end, Natsu happily sighed. He never heard such beautiful music before.
"I-I'm not really good, but... do you like it?" Lucy asked.
"Are you kidding? That was awesome! You should perform for the talent show that's coming up next week." Lucy's eyes widened when she heard the word, "perform." She quickly shook her head and handed the guitar back to Natsu. Lucy never liked to perform in front of a large audience, even if she was good at it.
"I'm scared of people," Lucy said softly. Natsu frowned and placed the guitar back where it belonged. He really wanted to show how talented Lucy is. He thought a gift like that deserves to be recognized. Suddenly, an idea popped into his head and he tapped Lucy's shoulder to get her attention.
"Let's make a deal. If you participate in the talent show, then I will too!" Lucy thought about the offer. She didn't like to perform on stage, but she really wants to see what Natsu could do for the talent show.
"Fine, but we sign up together, okay?" Natsu nodded and engulfed Lucy with a hug. Lucy was shocked by the sudden act. It wasn't awkward or weird. It was actually really nice. As Natsu hugged her longer, she could feel her heart thumping and her cheeks flaring. She could feel butterflies fluttering in her stomach and it wouldn't stop. Lucy didn't want it to end.
~ONE WEEK LATER~
"Are you okay, Lucy? You look like a tomato," Natsu said. Lucy nodded, but deep down, she really wanted to scream. It was a full house and the auditorium was packed with students and families who were dying to see the talent show. It made Lucy nervous.
"I-I'm fine. I-I just don't like p-people," Lucy stuttered. Natsu felt bad for forcing Lucy to join the talent show. He thought it would help her be more outgoing and make some new friends. He didn't know she was going to be scared by the large number of people.
"Hey, I know I'm not really good at giving advice, but my mom always told me to believe in yourself and never be scared. She gave me a lucky handkerchief, so I wouldn't be afraid to go on stage. Just imagine that you're the only one here playing the guitar and you'll do great!" Lucy looked puzzled. How in the world is she going to be able to picture herself alone when there is a ginormous crowd right in front of her? She thought it was absurd.
"Natsu, I don't know..."
"Next up on stage is... Lucy Heartfilia!" The host said. The crowd of people applauded, making Lucy whimper in fear. She couldn't take the pressure and left the stage without looking back. It was all coming back to her. The fear of humiliation. She didn't like that feeling at all. The host went backstage and was surprised when Lucy wasn't there. Natsu ran up to him to try and give Lucy some time.
"Excuse me, but Lucy told me that... Uh... S-She needed to go to the bathroom!" The host stared sharply into Natsu's eyes. It was as if he was trying to see through his lie. Natsu gave him a smile and the host's suspicion was gone.
"I'll give her ten minutes, but we will move on if she doesn't come back. Am I clear?" Natsu nodded and rushed out of the stage to find Lucy. In his mind, he wanted to search everywhere in the school. However, there may not be enough time.
"Come on, Natsu. Where could she be..." And that's where it hit him. As fast as his little legs could go, he hurried up the stairs and passed the hallways to get to the music room. He mentally cheered when he heard a guitar playing. As he crossed his fingers, Natsu opened the door and found Lucy lying on the ground, while softly playing the guitar. Lucy was startled when Natsu popped in. She wasn't expecting anyone to find her.
"N-Natsu? W-What are you doing here?" She quivered. Natsu sat next to her and remembered about his lucky handkerchief. He took it out of his pocket and handed it to Lucy. She took the handkerchief, but didn't know what to do with it.
"Use it as a blindfold," Natsu said. Lucy was confused. She didn't want to cover her eyes. It'll prevent her from seeing anything.
"But-"
"Here let me do it for you." Natsu grabbed the handkerchief from Lucy and gently tied it over her eyes. He secured it into a knot and placed his hands on her shoulders to guide her through the school. Lucy was afraid that something might happen to her. What if she slips or falls? She would never forgive Natsu.
"Natsu? You better keep me from falling," Lucy said in an orderly tone.
"Don't worry. You're not going to fall. Just have a little faith in me, okay?" Lucy nodded. She trusts Natsu. After all, he has been there for her ever since she was a new student. She remembered when he gave her a tour of the school. Lucy was too shy to ask anybody where all the classes are, but Natsu was there to the rescue. It showed her how much he cares about her.
"Natsu, do you know where we're going?" Natsu didn't answer, but hoisted her up to his back. She was surprised at first, but she realized he was just giving her a piggyback. She could hear Natsu's steps as he descends down the stairs and into a room.
"Keep the blindfold on. Don't let it go until I tell you." Lucy didn't say anything, and nodded. She could hear him walk away from her, but she knows he'll be back. Natsu went to the host and whispered to his ear, so that only the two of them could hear. The host was confused by what Natsu said, but he listened to him anyway. He went to the front of the stage and got everyone's attention.
"Ladies and gentlemen, for the next act, reframe yourself from clapping or making any loud noise until the end of the performance." The audience nodded and all of them quieted down for the next act to come on stage. Natsu saw this and hurried over to Lucy.
"Lucy, I know that I get you into things that you don't like, but I just want you to know that I'll always be there for you. The reason why I want you to perform in front of an audience is because I want you to not be afraid of people anymore. You'll be able to talk and make new friends other than a guy like myself. Just know that I'm not doing this to hurt you, but to help you." Lucy was touched by Natsu's words. She really wanted to give him a hug, but she couldn't see where he was. She could feel Natsu giving her something that felt very familiar to her. It was her guitar.
"Huh? Why did you give me my guitar?" Lucy asked. Natsu shoved her all the way on stage and the audience was still quiet, which Natsu was grateful for. There was a chair at the center of the stage and Natsu directed Lucy to it. He made her sit on the chair and whispered to her ear.
"You know that song you played to me when you were at my house? Can you play that again?" Lucy smiled and got into position to play her guitar. Natsu tiptoed off the stage and saw Lucy strumming the guitar. It was a calm and soothing sound. The gentle music echoed through the auditorium for everyone to hear. You could feel the atmosphere become more relaxing as Lucy got deeper into the music. Natsu wasn't surprised, however. He knew she was going to be the star of the show.
Everyone was amazed by how talented Lucy is. They were confused as to why she had a blindfold on, but they thought it was part of the act. In Lucy's mind, she thought she was all alone, playing in a room all by herself. It was perfect, just the way she likes it. She imagined being in her favorite place. It was spring. The cherry blossoms were blooming and the butterflies were swarming around her. She could feel the soft, green grass touch her light, pale skin as they made contact with each other. She longed for spring to come again.
The song came to an end, but the audience was blown away. They never heard such beautiful music in their life. They wondered if she was a prodigy or went to a prestigious school for music. All of them wanted to hear her play again. They wanted her to play with more passion and with more power. They wanted an encore. They wanted to experience the whole thing again. They wanted to be amazed just like they did the first time.
The room was filled with whistles and applauses. Lucy could hear people cheering and chanting for her to play again. She took off her blindfold and had a mini heart attack. She could not believe that this many people saw her play the guitar. She was beginning to feel flustered. Her head was spinning, but she tried to keep her composure. Natsu saw this and went to go aid her. He held her hand and dragged her off stage to avoid getting bombarded by the loud noises coming from the audience. Lucy was furious. She slapped his hand away and gave him a glare.
"Natsu! How many times do I have to tell you that I don't like performing in front of people!" Lucy exclaimed with her infuriating tone. Natsu scratched his head and his expression turned into a mix of sadness and guilt. He really thought she was going to be happy that she was able to show the audience what a great musician she is.
"I'm sorry..." Natsu whispered. Lucy was furious. She stormed off stage with her guitar and didn't bother looking back. She couldn't believe that he lied to her. He manipulated her into playing her guitar in front of the people. It made her want to cry. She just lost her very first friend.
~THE NEXT DAY~
Lucy didn't want to go to school. She was still upset with Natsu and she didn't have the courage to look at him. She begged for her parents to let her skip school, but they didn't let her. They lectured her in the car about how education is important and how it shouldn't go to waste.
She arrived at the front entrance of the school and took a deep breath. She got out of the car and was immediately greeted by two girls. One with light, blue hair and the other with bright, red hair. Lucy, being the shy person she was, slowly backed away from the two girls and squirmed.
"Hi! My name is Levy and this is my friend, Erza. We heard you play at the talent show and we want to recruit you for our band," the blue-haired girl said. Erza extended her arms for a handshake, which Lucy reluctantly grabbed.
"We thought your guitar playing was beautiful and we would like for you to come to the music room to practice. If that's okay with you, of course." Lucy wanted to deny them, but she couldn't turn down two friendly people. Sighing, she nodded her head and the two girls squealed with glee. They waved goodbye and went on their merry way.
Lucy took a deep breath and went inside the school. She was about to head to her locker until a crowd of people surrounded her. She tried to find a way out, but to no avail. Everyone wanted to compliment on her performance yesterday, which made Lucy smile. She never had this many attention before. She actually enjoyed it.
Little by little, she started to feel more comfortable being around people and getting to know them one by one. She smiled, laughed, and even talked a bit about herself, which she rarely does. Being able to socialize made Lucy feel more confident and more open to others. She realized that if it wasn't for Natsu, she wouldn't have been able to meet so much people. She immediately regretted yelling at him.
She looked at the time and saw that she had exactly fifteen minutes to try and find Natsu. She excused herself from the crowd of students and looked for her pink-haired friend. She searched everywhere, but couldn't find him. There was one place she hasn't checked yet and that was the cafeteria. She ran all the way to the lunch tables and saw Natsu sitting at the table the both of them met for the first time. She tapped his shoulders and gave him an apologetic smile.
"Hey," Lucy said.
"Hey," Natsu said back. There was an awkward pause for a moment, but Lucy ignored it. She sat next to Natsu and saw him working on a math assignment. The title said that it was extra credit and Natsu was struggling on completing it.
"When is it due?" Lucy asked. Natsu pointed to the due date, which said tomorrow on it. She immediately thought of an idea and smiled.
"I can come over to your house. I heard it's like a play date or something." Natsu chuckled and made eye contact with Lucy.
"Let's walk to my house after school." Lucy nodded and the bell rang, signaling all the students to go to their class. Natsu packed all of his stuff in his backpack, but before he could leave, Lucy grabbed his hand and looked into his eyes.
"Natsu, I... are we still friends?" Natsu grinned and gave Lucy a hug. There it was again. The weird sensation she's getting. Her heart was pounding and she could feel her whole body heating up. Natsu released her from the hug and saw a tiny blush form across her cheeks.
"Yeah, we are." Natsu left, leaving Lucy to her thoughts. Inside, she was jumping with joy. It made her happy to know that Natsu was still her friend. Lucy made a small smile and headed off to her first class of the day.
~END OF FLASHBACK~
Lucy finished playing the guitar and the memories of when they were little kept replaying in Natsu's head. He remembered the times he would talk to her and occasionally give her hugs. He always laughed at how red she gets every time he hugs her. She could never get used to it.
"Hey, Lucy?" Natsu asked. Lucy laid the guitar next to her and looked in Natsu's onyx eyes.
"Yeah?" Natsu scratched his head and sighed. He didn't like to be the one to say something difficult. He would always stutter or mess everything up.
"Remember at sixth grade when I tricked you into playing the guitar in front of a large audience? Well, I know that this is late and everything, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am. I should've left you alone and respected your privacy, but I didn't and I hope you can forgive me." Natsu avoided making eye contact with Lucy, since he was too embarrassed to look at her. Lucy couldn't help, but blush at Natsu's apology. She thought it was sweet of him to admit for what he did wrong, even if it was five years ago. It made her heart flutter.
"No, I should be the one to apologize. I was the one who yelled at you and you didn't deserve to be yelled at. I knew you were only doing this to help me, but I was so angry that I lashed out my anger on you. Besides, you helped me to conquer my fear of people." Natsu smiled and used his hand to push away the hair that was covering Lucy's face. He touched her cheeks lovingly and looked deeply into her eyes.
"Lucy, I-"
"Natsu, it's time to go. Your mom wants you home in fifteen minutes," Lucy's mom, Layla, said. The moment was broken and Natsu grabbed all of his stuff from Lucy's room. The both of them went outside and the sun was about to set.
"I know that we didn't exactly study, but thanks for letting me hear you play," Natsu said. Lucy nodded and made sure the door was unlocked before closing it behind her. She wanted to chat privately without her mom disturbing them.
"Before my mom interrupted us, what were you going to say to me?" Lucy asked. Natsu's eyes widened, realizing what he was about to say if Layla didn't interfere with their conversation. Natsu was debating whether or not to tell her. He wanted so badly to tell her his feelings that he developed for her. The never ending happiness he gets every time he's around her.
"I was just going to say how much I care about you." Lucy's cheeks turned into a deep shade of red. She knew that Natsu always cared about her, but to say it to her in person felt different. It felt like he was sealing the deal. It gave her a tingling feeling that made her feel giddy inside.
"I care about you too, Natsu." Lucy was about to go back inside, but before she could, Natsu planted a kiss on her cheeks. When he pulled away, the both of them were staring at each with blushing faces.
It was cold outside, but Lucy couldn't feel it. She could only feel the warm sensation of Natsu's lips as it made contact with her cheek. There was something deep within her body that made her heart beat uncontrollably. She was unfamiliar of what she was experiencing, but she didn't want it to stop. Perhaps she finally realized what Natsu meant when he told her how much he cared about her.
And perhaps she realized that she also cared about him too...
