Author's POV:
"You haven't told him yet, have you?" A blonde-haired girl and her best friend were seen sitting down on the grass in front of their school. Lucy and Levy had received their letters from the same college and they were thrilled when they got accepted to their favorite university. Everything was going by in a blink of an eye. It seemed just like yesterday it was the first day of school. Now, it's their last.
"I'm not telling him just yet, Levy. I don't really want to deal with it. I know we promised each other that we would go to the same college, but that's not the college I want to attend. I want to be in a university. A university where I can approve on my writing and become a successful writer." Lucy laid her head on the soft, green grass, while looking up at the light blue sky. It was a beautiful day to be outside. It was calm, peaceful, and it felt as if all your problems were slipping away.
"He deserves to know, Lucy. You were friends with him ever since elementary school and you've been dating him for almost four years. That kind of relationship builds on trust and not keeping secrets from each other." Lucy looked at Levy and found a genuine smile across her lips. She didn't like it when her friend smiles like that. It makes her feel bad.
"Fine, I'll tell him today, but I can't promise you that I will remember." As Lucy finished talking, the bell rang, signaling everybody to go to sixth period. It was also their last class for the day, which Lucy was grateful and ungrateful for. Grateful that it's her last class, but ungrateful that her last class is physical education. In other words, PE.
"Alright, since this is our last day of school and PE, let's all do dodgeball!" Coach Gildarts ordered. Everyone cheered and all them were separated into two teams. Blue and red. Lucy felt someone poke her shoulder. She looked back and saw Natsu with his usual happy self. She completely forgot that Natsu was in her sixth period class.
"Hey, Lucy! Did you get the letter yet? What did it say?" Natsu asked. Lucy didn't know what to say at this point. She was oblivious to the fact that the game had already started. After almost four years of being a couple, it will all be washed away when Natsu finds out the truth. He is her best friend and to see them split will surely break Lucy's heart.
"Actually, I didn't get the letter." Natsu looked at Lucy and his expression turned glum. He then realized something and he was back to his normal behavior. The dodgeball was coming at Lucy's way, but she was so distracted at how Natsu was able to change his expression so quickly. Shouldn't he be sad that she is going to leave him? It doesn't make sense. The dodgeball missed Lucy by a centimeter and everyone gasped at how close the ball was to hitting Lucy.
"That's ok. You'll probably get the letter tomorrow. I'm glad that we decided to stay together through college." Now, this made Lucy feel very guilty. No wonder he wasn't upset about it. She knew she was going to have to deal with this situation, but she didn't realize that she had to do it at the last day of school. She thought she would have it all sorted out a week before, but the letters weren't sent out as early as she would've wanted it to.
"No, Natsu. I mean, I'll never get the letter."
"Of course, you are. You're the smartest girl I know. You just have to believe."
"Natsu... I'm not going to the same college as you are." Natsu looked at Lucy with skepticism. He just couldn't believe that Lucy isn't going to the same college with him.
"What are you talking about? Didn't we promise each other that we'll go to the same college?" There was a brief pause shortly after Natsu asked. Lucy took a deep breath in before answering.
"I'm going to New York University..." The dodgeball was coming at Lucy again, but Lucy was still distracted. She could see how shocked Natsu looked. He couldn't believe it. After all this time, she lied to him. Lucy heard someone telling her to look out, but she was too late to act. The dodgeball directly hit her face.
*~*~*
For a brief moment, darkness was all Lucy could see. Nothing was there, but the bitter color black. Lucy must be hallucinating. Where could she be now?
Well, she's actually in the nurse's office. Before, Lucy was talking to Natsu. They were having a very serious conversation during PE. Then, Lucy told Natsu she was going to go to New York University. A splendid choice for a student who wants to become a well known writer. Now, Lucy was carried to the nurse's office, because of the injury she has received.
Seconds later, Lucy opened her eyes and saw a hanging light right on top of her. As she tried to sit up straight, the throbbing pain in her head started to take its toll. Her hands automatically went to go caress the part of the head that bothered her. After the pain subsided, she looked around and found Natsu right by her side. He was sleeping with his head on the edge of the bed.
Lucy looked at Natsu's sleeping face and smiled at how innocent he looked. She used her right hand to ruffle the soft, spiky hair he has. Everything was going by very nicely. It was calm, peaceful, and it felt as if all your problems were slipping away. Unfortunately, your problems will still stay with you until you fix them. In scenarios like these, the boyfriend will wake up and check to see how his girlfriend is doing...
"Lucy, are you ok? Someone threw the dodgeball at you and it hit your head pretty badly."
To which the girlfriend would say...
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a slight pain in my head is all. Don't worry, I'm alright."
The boyfriend will express how happy he is to hear that...
"Good, I'm glad you're ok."
The girlfriend will try to stand up, but the boyfriend wouldn't let her...
"Hey, take it easy. Just rest some more. Coach says you might have to stay in here until school ends."
The girlfriend will listen to her boyfriend and the room will be filled with silence.
"..."
One of them will initiate the conversation...
"Hey, Natsu..."
The boyfriend will respond...
"Yeah?"
The girlfriend is feeling nervous, but she knows she has to say what's on her mind or she'll never get over it...
"About what happened during dodgeball, remember when I said I was going to New York University?"
The boyfriend will remember and start to get angry...
"I thought we agreed that we would go to the same college together."
The girlfriend will start to feel guilty and try to resolve things...
"I'm sorry that I didn't tell you sooner. My lifelong dream dream is to go to New York University and become a writer. Lots of people told me that I'm really good at writing, so why not make it my career?"
The boyfriend will understand, but he will still be mad at her...
"I'm still upset that you didn't tell me sooner. Promises are never meant to be broken."
The girlfriend will try to tell the boyfriend that everything is alright...
"I know, but I'm telling you this now and that's all that matters."
The boyfriend will stop being angry and the both of them will work whatever issue they have...
"Let's work this out during the summer. I really want to make this relationship work."
However, scenarios like these don't always come true. Sometimes you don't get the ending that you want. Life is always a mystery. You don't know what's going to happen. You only know that what you do now can ultimately effect your entire future. It's called the butterfly effect. Lucy and Natsu just happened to get a different scenario...
"I can't believe you didn't tell me you were going to New York University! I can't believe you would lie to me like that!" Natsu said with his cold, hard tone. Lucy was a bit shaken up by how Natsu was taking the news. She immediately regretted not telling him sooner.
"I'm really sorry, Natsu. I was going to tell you, but I was scared. I was afraid that you're going to be mad at me for keeping a secret from you. I don't want to leave you, but I really want to go to New York." Natsu held Lucy's hands together and looked deeply into her eyes. Lucy could see a mix of emotions when she looked into his black orbs. Anger, sadness, confusion, and... love? Her eyes must be playing tricks on her, but she could definitely sense it. If Lucy is going to New York University, there's no question that Natsu is going to miss her.
"I'm not mad at you for keeping a secret. I'm mad that you broke our promise. I don't want to be in a relationship with someone who's going to lie to me. It just shows that they don't feel comfortable telling me anything. I mean, why would I want to stay with somebody who can't learn to trust me?" Lucy was on the verge of tears. She could see the sincerity in his eyes when he said he doesn't want to be in a relationship filled with lies. He deserves better than that.
"Natsu, I don't want this relationship to end. I don't want to lose you just because we're going to different colleges. We can always stay in contact and visit each other. We'll make it work. I know we can." In Natsu's mind, he can envision them having a long-distance relationship. However, it wouldn't work out. The both of them will find someone else and move on from each other. Natsu doesn't want that. He doesn't want to take the chance.
"Lucy, we have been together for a long time. I want this as much as you do, but I can't see us working out if we go to different colleges." Lucy gripped Natsu's hands tighter as if she's afraid of letting him go. Her heart was beating faster and faster as each second passes. She doesn't want to lose her boyfriend just because they're going to different colleges. It's awful.
"Natsu, I really want to go. Please, don't make me choose between you or New York." Natsu shook his head. Lucy really does have to choose. If she goes to New York University, she'll get her dream school, but she'll have to break up with Natsu. However, if she chooses Natsu, she'll miss the opportunity to go to her favorite university.
No one wants to choose between their boyfriend or their dream school. In the end, people would always ask themselves whether they made the right decision. The truth is, there is no right decision. They're actually asking themselves whether they are happy with their decision. Some people would agree and others would not.
After thinking for quite some time, Lucy has found her answer. She's praying that she is choosing for what's best for her. Will she be happy with what she chose? Who knows? Needless to say, she will have to say goodbye to the choice she doesn't pick.
"Natsu, I love you with all of my heart. You're the reason why I'm who I am now. I remembered the time you told me to always follow my heart. Well, I am. My heart... it's telling me to go to New York. I'm sorry..." With that final decision, the bell rang, signaling everybody to go home. The halls were filled with students screaming and cheering that summer is finally here. It was supposed to be a joyous day for everyone, but not for Lucy and Natsu. Natsu looked at Lucy one last time and released her from his grip. He exited the nurse's office and went back to his locker. Lucy, on the other hand, was mentally telling herself that she made the right choice...
"Choosing the right path is never easy. It's a decision we make with only our hearts to guide us..."

Next Update: ??/??/??
Well, it's not a happy ending, but that would've been the decision I chose if I was Lucy. Of course, I never been in a relationship, but why would I want to stay with a boy and miss the opportunity to go to one of the best writing schools in the world? I mean, I don't want to become a writer, but I would if I was Lucy. In a perfect world, I wouldn't have to go through the the same situation as Lucy did, but only the future could tell me that. Anyways, thanks for reading this one-shot! I hope you all enjoyed it!
