Love of Waves - Part 1

There was nothing much to love about my job. I no longer felt the thrill of crime and a cannon could hardly wake me up. I sometimes couldn't tell the difference between a drunk and sober brain. Then I met him. He had been waiting at the port, his bag weighed down with scrolls and maps. His name was Sebastian.

The captain eagerly took in the scholar, only asking him to read some maps that none of us could read.

After a few months we stopped at another port. While the rest of the crew went gambling and drinking, Sebastian asked me to tag along with him to a book store. Before this our only communication had been the looks we would give each other. Short 'I want to talk' looks but it seemed we were both a bit too scared. But now we were leaving the crew to enjoy whatever pleasures they could get themselves into, while we went to buy books.

"We're supposed to be on a supply run, why are we going here?" It seemed an innocent enough question, or at least one that would get him to call me dumb, because I would like for him to explain. He turned to me with his eyes lighting up.

"Well, I like books more then most people".

"Then why am I here?"

Sebastian stopped, he bit his lip slightly as he turned away from me. "I said most people didn't I?" he started walking again keeping his head down. I quickened my pace to keep up. The street lights were dim and the fog was closing in. I didn't grab a lantern either. When I finally caught up to him again he was standing right outside the store. "Besides" he said turning to face me. "I needed someone tall".

It must have been a trick of the light, me being over tiered. I've seen a thousand pirates make the same cocky, sly, almost smirking smile that Sebastian was making. "Alright then" I opened the door for him to walk in.

The room was filled with paper. Books bound in leather lined the shelves and sat in piles all over the place. Lose pages were also piled, some blank but most with writing, a wall in the back was lined with rolled paper and that's the first place Sebastian ran. He looked at the inscription bellow each honey combed cabinet before he pulled out a long roll of paper. "Go clean off that table" he nodded to a table next to me pilled with books with a few candles around. I quickly moved books to the floor and the candles to one side as he rolled out the paper, it was a map. "This is just like..."

"The captain's map" Sebastian finished. "I had a theory and this might be my only way to..." he trailed off as his eyes moved over the map, mostly of the writing I assumed were the names of the cities. "Prove it" He said happily pointing at something. He looked at the books under the table, then off to another aisle of books. I looked at him, I was staring but didn't care. The way his eyes would light up when he found something or when he struck his tongue out when thinking was just so adorable I couldn't resist. I found myself starting to day dream when a large stack of books were placed in my hands. "These should do. We'll find treasure in no time".

"Sebastian, I know you're probably smarter then me, but how do books find us treasure?"

The younger pirates laughed, a small giggle before he looked up at my completely serious face. He stopped. "I think we should stay here a bit longer" he takes one of the books from my arms and sat down. "Come on" he patted the seat next to him expectantly. I made my way over to him. He opened a book "Do you have any reading experience?" I shook my head sitting down. Sebastian smiled softly. "That's okay, I can read this to you".

He started reading the book to me. It was about sea monsters, all great stories that I knew, but at least his voice was nice. At one point he just stops. "Hey I know this story; why did you stop?"

"Because, I just found my answer." He turned to me, when he smiled. "What's that look for?"

I guess I must have been smiling, maybe even blushing. "Nothing" I quickly turned away from him, I felt his hand on my shoulder, and then with his other hand on my face, turning my head to face him.

"Really? Because it looks like you got a sunburn" he moved closer, his own cheeks starting to glow red.

"Well so do you.. and there ain't no sun in here"

He turned back to the book, away from me "But at least we've got something . Now just put the map back, I'll buy the book" and he was off. I sighed looking along the honeycombed shelves. There were a few open and I was not sure where this belonged. I picked one at random, as I saw no better way to make this decision and went to meet with Sebastian.

The sun was already starting to come out, we must have been in that store for hours, but it didn't feel like it. Sebastian wanting for me with that same smile on his face. "Say, you want to help me hunt for treasure?"

Of course I agreed but from the moment we needed sleep. I found us a room in a not too flashy part of the town. It was only a single bed, and I started to fain sadness before Sebastian smiled. "You can keep me warm then" He walked up to the room and kicked off his shoes before curling up in the bed. I sighed and did the same, moving behind him so he curled up against my chest. We lied in silence for a long time before I heard Sebastien's calm soft breaths. Then I let sleep take me too.
