The people round about knew him as Strong Wind, the Invisible. He lived with his sister at the edge of the wide bay-and he could make himself invisible when he wanted.

He and his sister lived in a tent near the sea and his sister used to help in all his work. Many girls would gladly marry this powerful warrior; and when they were told that Strong Wind would marry the first girl who saw him when he came home at night, they became keener than ever to win him as a husband.

But, of course, it would be easy for any girl to say she saw him, even if she had not; so Strong Wind thought of a trick to test whether the girls were telling the truth. Whenever a girl went down to the beach to try to see him coming home, Strong Winds sister walked with her. His sister would always see him, but the girl could not.

When Strong Wind came home in the evening light, his sister would see him approaching and say " Here comes Strong Wind now; do you see him?"

And every time the hopeful girl would say " Yes, I can see him clearly."

"What is he drawing his sled with?" The sister would ask.

And each girl would answer "With a great cord."

So the sister would know the girls were telling lies and their answers were only guesses. Many girls tried to win him as a husband this way, but he refused them all-he would not have a wife who lied.

In the nearby village lived a great chief who had three daughters. Their mother had died sometime earlier. The youngest of these daughters was ver beautiful and kind and everyone liked her; the two eldest daughters were jealous of her beauty and of her kindness to others and they treated her very badly.

They made her dress in rugs so that she looked ugly. They cut off her beautiful long black hair. They ever took coals from the fire and burned her so that her face was scarred. Then, as if that we're not enough, they told her father that she had done these things to herself. But the young girl stayed patient and kind and worked in the house, as she was happy to look after her father, who no longer had a wife to look after him.

Like most girls in the neighborhood, the chiefs two eldest daughters tried to win Strong Winds heart as a his husband...
