28| A Barrier Blocking Us

Annie didn't bother fighting the men, she took one look at Cedric and me before grabbing hold of us. A popping noise rang in my eyes and I felt like I had been swallowing air, my stomach light but full. It took me a moment for the dark blur around me to focus in and suddenly we were all standing in Annie's small office.

A shocked gasp comes from my mouth but no one else seems as confused, instead, Cedric falls into one of the chairs and Lucian checks him over. Annie comes to me, her hands and eyes tracing over every part of me.

"Are you alright, button?" Her voice is filled with worry but my head is still spinning from the sudden changes and my adrenaline-filled heart to pounding so hard that I can't even open my mouth.

She watches me struggle, my eyes seeing deep inside of her, seeing the way hers seem to shake.

"How did you find us?" My voice is scratchy and hurts to talk but I feel a little better after getting something else out. Annie gives me a smile, still holding my face in her warm, small hands she pulls me into a hug.

"Your scream, darling." Is all she whispers before holding onto me as tight as she can.

Something inside my chest starts aching and it takes me a moment to realise that it's happiness - well more contentment. I'm safe, with Annie and the boys, I'm not hurt and Cedric will make it.

Without realising it my vision starts blurring in tears, Nathaniel watches me over Annie's shoulder with a sigh. He looks content as well, or at least as content and happy as I have ever seen him.

Nathaniel walks over to me, still encased in Annie's arms, he wipes away my tears.

"That scream was something else," he starts keeping a happy expression on his face as he watches me, "you were hundreds of miles away but we heard you."

"How?" I ask as Annie pulls back, she moves quickly after giving me another check over to Cedric. Her hands doing the same as they did over me to him. This time stopping every now and again to focus on hurt places.

Blood comes from Cedric's arms and chest but it's a small amount that now we are out of the rain, it doesn't seem as bad. Suddenly remembering my rain-sodden clothes a shiver runs down my spine.

Nathaniel as always notices. He moves quickly to start the fire in the empty fireplace and as the room heats up he places a blanket over me. He's focused now, a small crease between his eyes as he works.

"In your moment of need the spirits of your ancestors gave you power, they filled you with some of their own power and sent your scream to us." He doesn't seem as shocked by the news but something inside of me feels with that same magic.

The spirit of my family had saved my life, I had saved Cedric's life with it.

Nathaniel looks up at me and I give him a small smile.

"Thank you for coming," I tell him and he takes a step closer to me with a small half-smile.

"Always." He whispers before finally pulling me into his arms.

We haven't talked much since the sudden kiss, and this is by the far the most we've touched but it feels right to be in his arms. I put my head into his neck and breath in his scent, feeling my body slightly relax to the smell.

Our silence allows me to listen to the others more, Annie still rushing around Cedric, talking quickly.

"They didn't attack your old wounds, they left some new cuts on your arms and legs. You seem more tired than anything." As she takes a breath I hear Cedric moving around on the chair and Annie begins tutting at him.

He doesn't let her go on.

"I couldn't shift." He tells her and I can hear the pain in his voice.

I don't let go of Nathaniel but turn us so I can see the other three. Lucian looks at us for a split second about to say something before changing his mind and turning back to Cedric.

"What do you mean you couldn't shift? Like you didn't have time to?" Annie asks, hearing the worry in her voice Lucian now gives his full attention to Annie.

"No it was like I was covered in mud, moving too slow and I was missing that spark." Worry laces his voice and something knots inside of me, I feel sick but move closer to the others.

Not wanting to let go of me Nathaniel follows behind, his hand still holding mine tightly.

"My wolf wasn't talking to me." His voice is detached and worried. I notice the way Lucian turns slightly green looking at Annie worried beyond belief.

Annie schools her expression quickly as she looks over at him.

"Is he here now? Your wolf?" Her voice is tense and strained.

Cedric nods his head, and before Annie can even ask, he closes his eyes with a sigh. I don't notice any physical changes but he straightens up almost immediately and his eyes are yellow when they finally open.

His wolf is in control. Nathaniel pulls me into him a little more and I remember the last time his wold was in control of him. No, I shake my head. I am a part of his pack he won't hurt me.

Cedrics wolf looks over at me, worry in his expression and I give him a little smile. He turns to Annie with a smile.

"What happened in the forest?" Annie asks him, the smile instantly dropping and the more animal nature taking control of his facial expressions. His lip curls up into a growl but no noise comes out.

"It was like I was being pulled away, I was screaming and barking but Cedric couldn't hear me. I could feel the fangs of a vampire under my fur and the cold iciness of a witch ripping into me." He shudders and a growl rips out of him.

No one flinches we all watch him. An iciness rips through my stomach at his words.

"A witch?" I turn to Annie who frowns out the window instead of answering me. "Is this something a witch can do, Annie?"

I turn to Nathaniel and Lucian but both of them seem just as confused as I do. All of us watch Annie waiting, my stomach is somewhere in my throat by the time she turns back to Cedric.

"Thank you for this information, I promise we won't let this happen to you again."

The wolf nods his head and gives a shudder.

"I don't want to be on my own." He whimpers, Annie places a hand on his shoulder and he looks up with tears in his eyes. "I was alone for so long without Cedric, I don't want to go through that again."

"I promise, we will try our hardest to save you and the others." She gives him a nod and then leaning in close she kisses the top of his head, blocking Cedric from my view. When she moves back Cedric's eyes are brown again, back to normal. There's now a white sheen over his face and the edges look almost green, telling me he had heard everything.

"That isn't possible, right? There's no way even a witch can take away our wolves like that?" Lucian asks his face that same sick colour as Cedric. They might not always agree with their wolves but they are a part of them now and the thought of losing that must be sickening.

I step closer to Cedric, rubbing his back in a soothing way as we wait for Annie to reply. We are in a semi-circle around us with no way of escaping.

She sighs.

"I have no idea, I hope not. Maybe ..." She trails off, shaking her head. "It's worrying. I don't have the answer."

Annie turns to Nathaniel.

"Call the meeting, get all of them to bring as many witch documents as possible." Her voice is that powerful tone again and Nathaniel pulls his hand out of mine.

I panic looking over at him, he kissing the top of my head not saying anything before walking out the door. His hand already typing numbers into his phone as he walks away.

I turn back to Annie, my panic and worry must be on my face because she comes closer to me. Pulling me into another short hug.

"I will be in a meeting all night, looking through documents until we find the answers we need. You don't have to worry, button. We will protect you." Annies words are soothing but they don't seem to penetrate into my worry.

She sighs and looks away from me to the boys.

"I don't want Morgan alone tonight." I go to interrupt her, the last thing she needs to be doing is worrying about me, but she grabs my hands and continues talking. "You two are on Morgan duty. Take her to your dorm and don't leave her alone for a moment."

The boys are serious as they tell Annie that she can trust them. She smiles at them and then asks them to wait outside.

Lucian helps Cedric outside and I can hear them making their way down the many stairs to Annie's office. I turn to her ready to talk to her about sending me away to the boys when I don't need protection but something in her expression stops me.

She suddenly looks so small and fragile.

"Annie," I whisper, pulling her into a hug. She leans into me and we stay there for a moment, just breathing in each other. Today she smells like lavender and it relaxes the tense part of my muscles.

"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you more button." Her words are swallowed in pain and I immediately shake my head at her.

"No. Don't say that. You protected me, you saved us. Grammy, I love you more than the world I could never blame you for something like this." I feel my heart thundering for her. "I believe wholeheartedly that you will find all the answers, you will save us all."

Annie pulls back with a small smile.

"Oh button, I know you think I'm pushing you away right now but I just need to know your alright. I need you protected while I'm distracted with finding answers."

I shake my head immediately. Sighing.

"No. Grammy, I was being unreasonable. We need you on the top of your game no stressing about me. I promise I will be with the boys at all times. No need to worry or stress."

Annie smiles at me again and pulls me into a hug.

"Try and get some sleep darling."

I give her my promise and then as she pulls out her phone to start calling the meeting I walk out with a small wave. The boys are waiting at the bottom of the stairs and I find myself placed firmly in between their two bodies. A smile on my face as we walk deep into the school.

I haven't been this far before and I soon find myself deep in the wolf dorms, some of them see me whispering behind their hands but then they see Cedrics limp or Lucian's glare and they quickly leave us alone.

We are near the back of the building when the boys finally pull up. Lucian motioning towards the last door here.

"This is my room, it's the biggest so all three of us will be able to sleep inside." A red tinge on his cheeks shows me his nerves and I wish I could say something to calm his nerves but suddenly the stress of the day tries to pull me under and Cedric is holding me up more than I am him.

Cedric laughs.

"I think we should get you into a bed." He whispers and Lucian quickly nods.

I laugh half-heartedly at them but it falls away quickly with a yawn, this sets the boys off into their own laughter as the door is opened.

Lucian is right, this room is massive. It's filled with comforting autumn colours, tv is on one wall with an Xbox attached to it and in the middle of the room is a massive bed. That honestly looks like it would hold five people without even touching the edges.

The boys pull me towards it.

"You take the bed, I have some blankets and a small mattress that Cedric and I can share," Lucian says sitting me down on the big bed.

I look up at him confused, he doesn't notice me instead his eyes are looking around the room for something. As he goes to step away I grab his hand, also grabbing Cedrics at the same moment. I give them both a sharp tug towards me.

"Lucian that is unnecessary this bed is bigger than anything I have ever seen. We can share."

He looks like he's going to shake his head on this but I pull him harder onto the bed.

"Honestly we could all sleep on this bed without touching." Not that I wouldn't want to touch them. "It's fine."

I don't let go of either of them until we are all under the warm yellow blanket of Lucians. It smells just like him and I pull it tighter around me.

I let my eyes slowly fall and hearing the low murmur of the boys talking, I feel protected and safe.

Lucian stands up to turn off the lights and I can feel Cedric moving around before turning away from us. I wiggle closer to him and when Lucian lays down behind me I grab his arm wrapping it around me with a sigh.

Lucian doesn't fight me on this and I can feel him relaxing around me. I smile into the darkness.

"Goodnight Cedric." I give his shoulder a small kiss.

"Goodnight, beautiful." He mumbles back. I smile and turn my head to Lucian who I can just make out in the darkness.

"Goodnight, Lucian."

"Goodnight, Morgan." He leans in kissing my cheek and I lean back into him with a sigh.

A fall asleep cuddled into Cedrics warm back and with the feel of Lucian behind me. A wave of protection falls over me and I know nothing will come for me in the middle of the night. As my mind starts to drift into that unconscious world a thought comes into my warm home.

The cold soothing hands of Nathaniel touching up my legs and laying between them. I sigh content and fall deeply into sleep.
