Not A Friend

Don chased me down the hallway. I could hear his voice, my heart beating faster than ever. I was light-headed and tired in Lindsey's arms then...nothing.

"Stephanie" My own name sounds like a faint whisper and I barely recognize it. "Stephanie, baby...come back to me" My body is dead weight. I'm out of body really, I can see everything happening. Hovering above myself like never before. My soul is adrift. "Sharon, take them. Something's wrong. Call 911" My daughters are crying but I can't open my eyes. "What happened?" Lindsey's voice is angry. He pulls Don by the shirt collar roughly and it frightens him.

"What are you talking about man? I didn't do a damn thing!" He says, defending himself against Lindsey's unyielding fiery stare.

"She was in tears, practically running down the hall way, you come chasing after her and yelling god knows what and you want me to believe you had nothing to do with this?! You've got to be kidding me!"

"We were just having fun. She can't handle her alcohol like she used to though"

"She shouldn't be drinking at all!" Lindsey yells. "You've always been trouble, Henley. I thought we were trying to be friends, I've brought you to my house, around my kids..." He shakes his head. "You are not a friend, you're not someone I want to have around"

"What about the show?" Don asks.

"Does it look like she's going to be able to perform tonight? No!"

"Whatever"

"Don't whatever me. I see the way you've been looking at her and touching her. Everyone's talking about it."

"And? So what?!"

"So what? She's my wife! I let it slide when we were having a couple beers at the house. I get handsy too, but I know there's something else going on"

"Look, she came to me. I tried to tell her no but..."

"But what?"

"I fucked her a couple times...she was begging for it. You should have seen her!" Don chuckles and Lindsey sees red.

"Walk away, Henley before I do something I'm going to regret" The paramedics have arrived and they put my body on a stretcher.

"She was just as good as I remember, maybe even better...she's a wild cat, dude." Don continues and Lindsey clenches his fist, unable to handle anymore. He hauls off and punches him square in the nose and blood comes gushing out of it, pouring down the front of his shirt.

"Fuck, man! What the fuck was that for?!" Don yells, holding his nose. "Get me a rag or something" he tells to one of his crew men. "Today, man!" The guy scurries off and returns shortly.

"Mr Buckingham, can you fill out her paper work? We need to get going" The paramedic says and Lindsey nods, shaking so much he can barely write.

Don turns to walk away, clearly defeated but still cursing and being nasty to everyone around him. "You're going to pay for this, buddy! I'm pressing charges!"

"Bring it on!" Lindsey yells back, venom dripping from every word. He means business and Don leaves. We get in the ambulance and Lindsey holds my hands. He knows the kids are safe with Sharon and promises to call with updates. She simply nods and comforts them.

-----

I wake up in a white room, groaning at the immense pain in my body.

"Linds?" I ask, my voice hoarse.

"Shhh Stevie..." He jumps up from the chair.

"Am I dead? Are you an angel?"

He smiles at me, taking my hand. "No, no I'm no angel and you're definitely not dead."

"What happened?"

"Have your heard from Karen?" He asks, not answering me and I shake my head.

"I tried to call her multiple times but she hasn't picked up"

"Oh..." I say. I drift back off without any answers. Lindsey remains by my bed as I sleep, stroking my hair.

My eyes open again and I smile, seeing he's still here. He's fallen asleep in the chair. His cell phone jolts him awake moments afterward though and he leaves the room without realizing I'm awake. I try to sit up but my body hurts. I sit very still, hearing bits and pieces of the conversation.

"Karen, thank God!"

"What happened? You've been blowing up my phone"

"Where the hell are you?"

"Home, why?"

"Shouldn't you be handling Stevie's affairs, you know, doing your job?"

"Don't use that tone with me. I didn't have to call you back. I don't work for her anymore"

"What? What do you mean you don't work for her anymore?"

"How much do you know?" She asks, suddenly softening her demeanor.

"I know that Don is disgusting and he slept with my wife. She isn't right, Karen. She passed out at the venue before the show and she has severe alcohol poisoning"

"Oh my god!"

"She's lucky to be alive. Her blood alcohol level was astronomical. The doctors were shocked. She needs a friend, she needs you." The line is quiet for a while. "I need help. I know you and I don't see eye to eye all the time but goddammit, I won't be able to live if something happens to her. I'm overwhelmed...I don't know what to do." Lindsey is crying and Karen sighs, really feeling for him in this moment. He's got to be terrified.

"Where is she?" She asks.

"Thank you, thank you so much!" Lindsey says, giving her the location.

"I'll be there. It just might take me a while"

"As long as you get here."

"Good bye Lindsey"

"Bye Karen"

He hangs up the phone and re-enters my room. "Is she coming?" I ask, now propped up on pillows.

"You heard?" He asks and I nod. "I'm sorry. I was just so worried" He sits by me and strokes my hair from my face. "Why did you fire your assistant?" He asks and I blink, shocked. "Did you hear me?"

"Y-yes, I heard you"

"Well?"

"I didn't fire her, she quit..."

"Did she say why?" He asks and I can tell in his tone he's angry. But with whom?

I start to cry "I don't want you to hate me, Lindsey. I did so many bad things"

"It's better to tell the truth now. Just say it"

"Don and I are having an affair...had." He stands up, pacing, running his hands through his hair. "Everything was catching up to me. My feelings over our baby, the album and tour were both hell afterward and I never dealt with anything. I chose Don as my co-headliner and I thought you'd be upset but you weren't. It was amazing, you were so different. But then when he kissed me and you didn't care...it's like you didn't care about me. I couldn't cope. I started drinking and it got worse and worse until I could no longer function without a drink...well, a lot of drinks."

"Jesus!" He looks at me and it all become clear. "You weren't working on tour schedules at all, were you?"

"No" I say sadly. "We were kissing in the kitchen and you came back home."

"You lied so many times, Stevie"

"I know, and I'm not proud of myself. Believe me. I hate myself" I cover my face with my hands, continuing to cry.

"I can't look at you right now. I'm going to get the girls from Sharon and I'm going home. Karen will be here to take care of you"

"You're not staying?"

"I can't, Stevie. I need time to think. I don't want to do anything rash with how I'm feeling right now"

"Are you leaving me?" I ask. "Please, just tell me."

"All I can tell you is that with what happened earlier with Don, we are both lucky I'm even here talking to you right now"

"What does that mean?"

"Bye, Stevie" he says without answering me. The door closes and I sink back into the bed, sobbing. I've ruined everything.
