Game Branch

~707's POV~

My eyes scanned through the messages of the last chatroom, having only the light of my computer and phone screens glowing in the darkness. A frown made its way to my lips as everything Legacy had explained fitted in with my theory.

I looked towards the right side computer and checked my progress so far with hacking the game's system; I was nowhere even near close to being finished! Not only that, my boss was getting more impatient the more I stall my current work. So getting all these things done as soon as possible was stressful, if you can't tell.

My sleeping schedule was messed up as it is, but the workload was just piling itself like a stack of pancakes...like a stack of pizzas...a 5 scoop ice cream cone with a variety of flavors~

"AGENT SEVEN."

"Hmm~? Wha--GAHHKK!!!"

Without a warning, my oh so wonderdul maid, Vanderwood, stuck his taser into the side of my neck to get me to focus. He was always such a serious kind of person, but come on! Isn't a slap to the head or a pinch on the cheek so much to ask? Why a taser of all things...

"Damn, that hurt..." I hissed and rubbed the area he electrocuted me with.

"Good." He commented. "Maybe that will get you to wake up more and finish your job. The deadline is in a couple of days and you barely did anything."

"Okay, okay..." I grumbled dejectedly and looked at the middle screen like I was going to do my work. Vanderwood nodded in satisfaction before turning on the lights and returning to his cleaning.

As soon as he left for the laundry room, I shifted my attention back to the right side computer and began typing away on my keyboard. Vanderwood would be pissed if he caught me now, but helping Legacy was more important to me.

Thinking about what she wrote on the last chat made me even more determined to get the job done. I could almost hear her voice inside my head saying them:

"I woke up without my memories"

"I don't know what was happening"

"I was terrified of everything around me"

Whatever happened that day, when the game glitched and brought Legacy to our world, it had something to do with this weird malware.

"All the codes are jumbled around," I mumbled to myself. "And if I try to fix them..." I retype the correct code in place of the mixed up ones, then a green eye logo appears on my screen, along with a glowing green skull with the words Error written all around it. After that the computer shut down for the fourth time that night.

"What the hell kind of virus is this..?!" I scratched my head in irritation. Whatever this annoying thing was, it's something I haven't encountered with before, and something I couldn't get rid of either.

"What are you yelling about now?" Vanderwood asked with a look of annoyance.

"Oh, uh, nothing. The computer shut down on me again." I replied honestly, restarting the CPU.

Vanderwood looked skeptical but shrugged it off and continued cleaning my house like my problematic situation was a typical everyday thing. I sighed and took out my phone again to log in to the messenger while my computer restarted.

"Huh? What's this??" I tilted my head and stared at the C a u t i o n written in bold letters at the bottom of the chatroom list. "That's strange... Only the game's player was supposed to have this on their phone."

The word just stayed there no matter how many times I log out and come back. Without much of a choice, I clicked it in order to see what would happen. Of course, I already knew what it meant, but there was no way that it was what I thought it was, right?

WRONG.

My eyes widened in fear when I saw the Day List on my screen. Everything about its appearance changed entirely and what's more unsettling was the picture of the character in the chosen route.

"LEGACY!?"

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was Legacy's route! How was this even possible when she's not even a playable character?!?!

"Hey, what was that scream about?" Vanderwood came rushing out of the laundry room and gave me a piercing cold gaze. "You better not be slacking off again, Agent Seven."

I didn't even bother to respond to his warning, my eyes were glued to the image on my screen. "Vanderwood, I'm gonna have to take a call first." I told him. "It's very important."

"What are you saying? Do you even know how critical getting this job done is? Seven, get back here!" Vanderwood yells for me to come back but I already headed towards the garage where it was more quiet.

The keypad beeped as I pushed the buttons, I had to hurry up and make sure Legacy was alright. My ears strained to listen for the call to be picked up and hearing her voice on the other line.

"Seven? Hey~ Something up?" She said.

"Legacy!? Hey, are you okay? Did something happen? Do you feel sick?" I started bombarding her with questions.

"Uhm, I feel okay, I guess?...Oh. Is this about what I wrote in the chatroom last time? Haha... Seven, you don't have to worry about that so much--"

"Of course I have to worry!! I mean... If it weren't for me then we wouldn't be in this situation right now. God... I'm sorry, Legacy. I'll try fixing this as fast as I can."

"...Seven? I don't understand what you mean. Why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything wrong."

My heart clenched after hearing her say that. I knew it was my fault from the beginning, I just hoped that it wasn't.

"Hey, Legacy..?" I said.

"Yes, Seven?" She answered.

I paused for a moment, eyes trained on the floor, considering the options presented to me. If Legacy was now part of the game and me as the new player, that meant that I had to play through her route. Playing her route might help me understand her a little better, just like what I had intended to from the start, and maybe finishing her route would send her back home. It wasn't exactly a solid plan, but it was worth a try.

"Legacy... Will you allow me to fall in love with you?"
