Chapter 19: Uncertainty

Your heart sank to the pit of your stomach.

"Wha-What?" You barely managed to whisper.

"I was-I was driving home when I suddenly got a call from the hospital, they say it was bad and and-" You could hear her starting to get a panic attack and tried your best to calm her.

"It's okay Jaehee, everything's gonna be fine, we'll head out now so just hang tight while we get there and try to calm your nerves, we don't want you getting hurt now do we?" You said with a forced smile but Saeyoung could see the tears streaming down your face as you spoke.

"Right, right, I'm almost there, I'll be waiting for you all, thank you Y/n." You didn't say goodbye before hanging up and bursting into tears.

"Y/n, what's going on???" Saeyoung urged feeling himself start to panic as every moment passed.

"Jumin's in the hospital, we gotta go, we've gotta get there fast, we-we have to get there now!" You couldn't control the anxiety attack as you tried your best to remember how you breathe and find the car keys at the same time.

"Y/n, Y/n, first I'm gonna need you to calm down okay?" Saeyoung was also panicking on the inside but one of you had to be strong at this point.

Ironic how you were freaking out after you told Jaehee to not freak out.

"What's going on?" Asked Saeran seeing the more than worried looks on your faces.

"Jumin's in the hospital and she's having an anxiety attack." Saeran was immediately at your side and decided to take charge.

"Saeyoung go get her coat and the keys and get the car started while I calm her down." He ordered. Saeyoung gave him a questioning look. "Just go!" Saeyoung nodded his head and left.

"Okay Y/n I'm gonna need you to breathe with me." He started taking deep breaths and encouraged you to follow. You did as he did and felt yourself starting to gain control again. "Good, now let's get you some water before we head out." You nodded your head and let him guide you to the kitchen.

After you calmed down, the two of you started heading out of the apartment and to the car where Saeyoung was waiting.

"You okay?" He asked still worried about how you were feeling.

"Yeah." You turned to look at Saeran before getting in the car. "I'm better now, let's get going."

"I'm here to see Jumin Han." You asked the lady at the desk. She noticed the urgency in your voice and quickly searched through the database.

"Yes, are you a family member?" She asked. You didn't know how to respond but Saeyoung beat you to it.

"Yes, we're cousins." He said as after he put away his phone and gave his ID to the lady.

He probably hacked the system and changed his data.

"Alright, he's on the 7th floor, room 259. Please, no running down the halls." She added. You said a quick thank you before speed walking down the halls.

The three of you waited for the elevator anxiously until it finally dinged. The three of you ran when there weren't doctors insight and slowed down when needed but eventually made it to Jumin's room. You took a deep breath before knocking on the door and opening it slowly.

And there he was.

Laying on the hospital bed with tubes extending to his arms from an IV bag and wires stretching from parts of his body to the heart monitor, beeping steadily and indicating his heart rate.

He looked different wearing the typical blue hospital gown in contrast to his usual formal attire. He looked pale, vulnerable. The sight unrecognizable.

Jaehee noticed you and rushed over to give you a hug.

"How is he?" Were the first words to escape your mouth. Jaehee pulled away from you and then back at her beloved friend.

"They said he would be fine, he took some heavy medication so he's asleep for now."

"But?" You asked knowing there was always something else. Jaehee refused to make eye contact as she spoke.

"His leg is broken." You then noticed the big lump where his right foot should be. "They put a cast on him and said it would take at least a good 3 months, maybe even more."

You knew what this meant.

Jumin can't work.

Working is his life. You can't just tell him to not do it for three months.

"Does he know?" Saeran asked this time.

"No, not yet." The room fell silent for a while before Saeyoung's phone suddenly rang making everyone jump slightly. He took out his phone and looked at the caller.

"Great, just what I needed." He cursed under his breath. You looked over his shoulder and noticed the words 'Rika' popped up.

Then something just clicked when you two looked at each other.

"You don't think..." You said barely above a whisper.

"I'm gonna kill that bitch," Saeyoung said through gritted teeth ready to stomp away and probably do something he'll regret later. You quickly got a hold of his arm and held it tightly.

"Saeyoung don't do it. Think about what you're doing. We don't want her taking advantage of you being blinded by hatred. She could easily turn things against you." You warned desperately not wanting him to get in trouble.

Saeyoung glared at the ground knowing you were right. He couldn't let her manipulate him so easily.

"Alright." He took a deep breath to calm his nerves. "Thanks, Y/n." He pulled you in for a hug then a quick peck on the lips. "I'll be back before you know it." He promised. You half smiled and let him go.

You immediately went for your phone to send a quick text

Y/n:

Hey Celest, Saeyoung's going out to meet up with Rika, please keep an eye on him.

Celest:

On it!

Don't worry, I'll notify you if I see anything suspicious ;)

Will things ever go back to normal?

~

Saeran said that he had work to do so he had to leave pretty early, leaving you with your best friend.

Every once in a while a young looking doctor would walk in and check some of Jumin's monitors and write something down and then he would leave without saying a word.

It got somewhat annoying every time he would just walk in and then leave in silence.

Like, my friend is knocked out, can I know how he's doing?!

"Excuse me." Jaehee spoke up seeing you struggle to talk to him due to your awkwardness.

Thank you baehee T-T

The doctor--we could finally see his name tag that read 'Alex'--turned around with a small jump, suddenly hearing Jaehee talk.

"I'd like to know how my friend is doing." She asked politely. The doctor seemed somewhat nervous as he spoke.

"He's, um, we're going to keep him in ICU for a couple of days and the bleeding has stopped." Alex's gaze trails to the floor as he started fidgeting with the board in his hand. "With patience and exercise, it seems he will make a full recovery." Alex seemed to have a blush on his face as he looked back up and spoke. You wondered if he thought Jaehee was cute.

"Thank you." Said Jaehee with a smile not really seeing that that only made Alex blush harder so he said a brief 'you're welcome' and walked away.

Once he was gone you nudged Jaehee's arm with a small smirk.

"So..." you say, a smirk creeping on your face.

Jaehee didn't get the hint and returned a puzzled look. "So...?"

"He's cute, huh?"

"Who? The doctor?"

"He obviously likes you." You nudged her arm once again.

"Nonsense, Y/n." She turned to look at the window to try and hide the blush. You jumped a bit suddenly hearing a knock at the door.

"Come in." You say softly, not wanting to wake Jumin up. Yoosung peeks his head in through the door and catches sight of you.

"Hey Y/n." He greeted sadly as he walked in with Zen right behind. Zen gave a small 'hey' and closed the door.

"How's he doing?" Yoosung asked as he leaned on the wall while Zen decided to take a seat next to you.

Jaehee gave a small explanation while you looked out the window.

Could Rika really have done this? From what Saeyoung has told me...this kind of thing is right up her alley.

"Man, this is a lot worse than I thought..." Said Zen as he ran a hand through his hair in stress. Your gaze falls to the rest of your friends. One by one you see the serious expressions drawn on their faces, their posture, the way Zen bounced his leg up and down or how Yoosung couldn't stop pacing back and forth.

The only question running through your head right now was- was it really an accident like Jaehee had given the impression of?

You take in a deep breath.

"That reminds me." Talking to yourself, you pull out your phone, making your way to the hospital entrance to see if you find him outside. "Why isn't he back yet?" You say to no one in particular.

Your phone rings, but no answer. There's a beep sound, redirecting you to leave a voicemail.

You try again and it was no different the second time around. Your grip tightens on your phone after dropping the call. Leaving another quick message to Celest. You strode back in, gaze somehow fixed on the white flooring.

What does she want?

You take your time getting back. What's the rush, you thought. On your way, you find Yoosung feeding money to a vending machine. Tapping his foot impatiently as he waited.

"Hey," You walked up to him. His head immediately snaps up to the sound of your voice.

"Hey, Y/n, where'd you go off to?" He made a small, kind of successful attempt at a conversation. His hand half dipped into the mouth of the machine, pulling out a bag of chips. Honey butter chips.

However, you really didn't want to talk about it with him just yet, you mentioned the whole Rika situation to Jumin but the others think that Saeyoung told them to watch over you because he was just being overprotective of you. "Nowhere special. I needed some air and to make a call." You answered calmly looking at the colorful snack options in the machine.

"Do you want anything?" He offered sweetly. You turned to him and smiled. It was refreshing seeing him being so kind in a situation like this.

"No thanks, Yoosung." You answered somewhat in a sad tone. You two stayed there a while just staring off into space, not really knowing how to continue the conversation, but then you went and blurted out.

"Did anything like this happen to you guys before I came along?" You were surprised hearing it yourself, it just kinda came out of nowhere.

Yoosung raised his eyebrows and turned to look at you, but you refused to make eye contact.

"What do you mean?" He asked suddenly not in the mood to open his bag of chips.

"Like, did these kinds of accidents happen before I was involved?" You didn't really know where you were going with this and felt your palms start to sweat.

"Um, well, not really," Yoosung answered honestly. "But we were constantly on edge with the whole 'V' situation."

"But no one in the RFA ever got hurt." You added.

"No..." Was all Yoosung could think about answering. You simply nodded your head. "Y/n if you're thinking that you-"

"Don't worry." You cut in. "It was just a stupid question." You chuckled, trying to seem fine when you obviously weren't. "Let's start heading back, they said Jumin might be waking up soon." You turned on your heel and started walking away but Yoosung was quick to grab your wrist.

"That question wasn't stupid." He began.

"Just forget about it Yoosung, it's nothing." You tried to brush it off.

"No, if you mentioned it then there's got to be a reason why." He said being persistent as ever.

"Yoosung drop it-"

"This isn't your fault!" He suddenly raised his voice making you flinch. "I know you're thinking that ever since you came here there's been a chain of bad events but you didn't cause any of this!" He let go of you and walked in front of you so that he could look at you dead in the eyes.

"We just ran into a bit of bad luck but you didn't cause any of this!" He tried to reason with you and had some trouble looking for the right words to express himself. All the while you could feel the guilt of the secret of his sister building up inside of you.

"Yoosung-"

"There might be the bad times in life but they get better in the end."

"Yoosung-"

"Please don't try to convince me that this was your fault because it wasn't, these things happen and we'll get through it but don't blame it on yourself-"

"But I could have prevented this!" You yelled at him. Yoosung flinched back and took a moment to process what you said.

"What?"

"I warned him but I didn't know she would go this far-"

"She?" Yoosung took a step forward, intrigued by this new information. "Y/n, what are you talking about, do you know who did this to Jumin?" You looked towards the ground knowing you fucked up.

"I'm not 100% sure but..."

"Y/n, what are you not telling me? Didn't we promise to trust each other and not hide anything?" He said with hurt-filled eyes. You thought back to the time you were at his apartment with a fever and the emotional talk you two had, and he was right. You balled your hands into fists.

"Saeyoung and I only mentioned this to Jumin."

"What's going on?" He urged the suspense was killing him.

"Rika has been seeing Saeyoung for some time now and blackmailing him, like threatening his life and those around him." Yoosung went wide-eyed.

"Did you say Rika?" He asked again not knowing if he heard right.

"Yeah." You rubbed your arm as you continued. "She was the one who contacted my brother just to make a point."

"This is my sister we're talking about." He began in a deep voice. "Why didn't you guys tell me earlier?" He didn't ask in a rude manner, it was more in an urgent and fretful.

"We- We were cornered. We didn't know who to tell since we didn't want anyone else to get hurt." It was ironic, you would often ask Saeyoung why he wouldn't tell you anything but here you are doing the same thing.

Yoosung took a deep breath.

"There's no point in arguing now." You raised your eyebrows in surprise. "So what are you guys planning on doing?" His answer was definitely not what you expected.

He really has matured.

"Right now we're not going against her, we're just kinda going along with what she says since we don't know her true motives. But she doesn't know that I know about her."

"You guys haven't tried to catch her??" He asked astonished by your course of action.

"No..."

"Have you learned nothing from the 'V' incident??" You took a step back seeing him getting all worked up all of a sudden. "I know she's my sister but that doesn't matter anymore, she's hurt too many people and the only way to get to her is to catch her as soon as possible." He said seriously.

"Then what do you suggest?" You were intrigued by this new outlook on the situation.

"One thing I know about my crazy sister is that she usually gets to the point with whatever she does."

"So far, all she's done is threaten us." Yoosung shook his head in denial.

"No, if she's taking this long then she's planning something bigger."

"Then what do we-"

"Hey guys!" You two jumped suddenly hearing Zens voice down the hall and turned to look at him. "Jumin just woke up!" And with that, he went back inside and you turned to look at Yoosung.

"Let's talk about this later." Yoosung nodded his head and you two made your way towards the room.
