Chapter 16: Working to stay alive
"Welp, that's the last of it. At least of what's necessary." You said as you wiped the sweat off your forehead.
"Why do you have so much junk?" Saeyoung asked with a sigh as he moved another box.
"Like you're one to talk. A LOCK OF ZEN'S HAIR."
"WOULD YOU LET THAT GO." You could hear Saeran's laughter from the other room.
"You have-"
"Drop it." Saeyoung warned. Saeran lifted his hands up in surrender but kept his smile.
"So now what?" Saeran asked as he flopped on his couch.
"I have to get to work. See ya!" You quickly got your bag and jacket and started to leave but Saeyoung caught you before you could.
"I'm taking you."
"You can watch from afar as I get there cause if not Rika's gonna notice that you're being more protective of me and that's only going to make things worse." You said a matter of factly. Saeyoung sighed and glared at his brother who only smirked at him.
"You should listen to your girlfriend." He said teasingly.
"Alright alright. But you can't blame me for being overprotective when there's a psycho maniac on the loose."
"Nothing new here, now is there?" You said honestly with a shrug. "See you later Saeran!" You called out before leaving.
"I'll be waiting for you beautiful!" He said knowing it would annoy his brother.
"Why are you like this?"
-
"Good afternoon, Jumin!" You said cheerfully as you walked into his office, shutting the door behind you.
"Good afternoon, Y/n. It's always a pleasure seeing you so bright." He complimented with a smile.
"Well you know, I gotta stay positive even though a psycho maniac is after me." You said casually using Saeyoung's words.
"Don't worry Y/n, you'll be more than protected here." He gave you a reassuring smile and you gladly returned it. You said a quiet 'thank you' then placed a stack of papers on the corner of his desk and a cup of coffee next to it.
"Are these the orders that they mentioned before?" He asked as he took out a pen and paper to take notes.
"No, this is all the info on the new company, Luteus." You also took out a black folder from under your arm. "These are the orders. They want them read and signed by 2:00 pm so I can send them out." You instructed.
"Alright, and what news do you have about the next office reunion?" Jumin started gathering all the paper and read while listening to you, one of his specialties was multitasking.
"Jaehee said she could have all the catering done by then and the decorations have already been scheduled along with the place." You smiled proudly.
"Just as efficient as ever, Y/n." Jumin gave you a proud smile.
"I need to be if I want to keep up with your pace." You chuckled a sigh knowing the long list of things you still had to do. "And don't forget that today we have another reunion with the new company alliance at 3:45 pm." You informed.
"Right, I'll finish this up and then we can head out. Thank you, you can get started now." He excused you and you started leaving the office but you stopped when you heard a single cough from Jumin meaning he still wanted to say one last thing. You turned to look at him. "And please don't overwork yourself, Y/n, I need you in top shape." He showed you a side smile and then turned back to the work at hand.
"Alright, thanks jumin." You sent a smile his way and finally walked out. Jumin chuckled lightly and took a sip of his coffee. He then heard his phone ring and picked it up after the second ring.
"Jumin speaking." He answered.
For a moment there was silence. When he was just about to remove the phone from his ear he heard a low voice on the other line, "This isn't over." Jumin lifted an eyebrow and then rolled his eyes in annoyance. This wasn't the first time he would get hate calls or threats considering how wealthy and powerful he was being the Chairman's son.
Jumin simply hung up his phone and got back to work, he didn't need unimportant things worrying him, he had other priorities and one of them is getting work done as efficiently as possible.
In the meantime you were focused on doing the same. Sorting out files, talking and arranging meetings for the rest of the week and-
"Ow."
You were shoved to the wall as someone passed you by. "Excuse you." You said as you bent to pick up the papers that just fell from the impact.
"Watch where you're going." An equality snide rebuke came from the woman who pushed you.
"Listen, I have been putting up with this for far too long." You glared at her as you gathered the last of the papers and stood up.
"What are you going to do? Tell Jumin and get me fired? I would like to see how well that sits with the Chairman."
You knew exactly what Sarah was talking about. Lately, Jumin's behavior has been credited to the addition of you joining the company. Of course, his current demeanor was refreshing and nice. Seeing him smile more often, being more considerate, but too much- He wouldn't allow being taken advantage of by his employees, he's smarter than that. But his overall personality has taken a shift for the better. The environment around the office has been much more tranquil than tense and always on edge. Because of this most of your co-workers think that there's something more to your relationship, even though you had constantly said it's just you two being good friends.
This little fact had gotten you a bit of hate and no one has been more expressive of her disdain for you than Sarah.
"Don't you have work to do." You finish picking up all the papers and walk off, not waiting for a reply. You brush off what she said because you knew that she would be more annoyed if you just ignored her.
You suddenly hear your phone ring. With the stack of folders in hand, it takes you a while, but- nope they stopped calling. Instead, they left a message.
Jaehee:
If you can take a break. Got something I want you to try. Bring Jumin.
She must have something new for the event.
Aka Jumin's surprise Birthday Party. Of course, He thinks it's some business event and to an extent it is, but not all of it. Sadly, He had this event scheduled on his own birthday and you couldn't help but wonder if he did that on purpose.
You message back a "k" and hurry to get all the work that had to be completed prior to this afternoon's meeting.
It doesn't take you long to go over everything. Most of the work you needed to do, you had already done yesterday. Meetings set, today's agenda set, files on the company, almost everything was done. The other set of work will begin once the meeting commences, until then you're good. You knock and walk into Jumin's office. "Hey, got a few?"
He raises his head at the sound of your voice. "Of course, do you need something?"
"Jaehee messaged me, she said she wanted us to come over and try something."
"Y/n, I would go, but-"
"Jumin, you're worried about me working so hard, while you're working your ass off. I know it's your job, but c'mon. What's a break once and a while." You said, seeing as he was already almost done with signing all the paperwork he had.
"Plus," You added while your eyes shifted to the door and back a completely innocent smile drawn on your face, "the 'something' is likely for the event. We would be going for business purposes only."
Jumin lets out a sigh. "Fine," He said in defeat. "But remember we have to get back here soon and have all the files-"
"Ready." You cheered, placing all the documents on his desk. "and we'll be back before the meeting. Don't worry."
Both of you begin your walk out of the office when you notice Jumin picking up the documents. "I'll read these over in the car."
You shook your head and let out a small laugh.
What else could you have expected from the trust fund kid?
You two make your way to the parking lot. Jumin suddenly stopped near the elevator with a concerned look on his face. "The driver was supposed to be here by now." He lifts his phone to his ear and attempts to get in contact with the driver. Instead, after a couple failed attempts of calling, he gets a call from his father. A couple of nods and statements of an agreement later, Jumin hangs up and turns to you. "The driver isn't coming."
"That's fine. You can drive us there, right?"
Jumin doesn't say a word, you begin to wonder if he even heard you. "Jumin?"
He seems to snap out of his daze "I suppose we should get back to the office then."
"Jumin." You said more firmly than before, with a slight tone of questioning. Then you remembered.
What if, like in the game...
"Jumin," you dared to ask, "Do you know how to drive?"
You don't get an immediate response, but once it seems Jumin had calculated some sort of answer in his head he replied with a simple, "No." He turned around and headed for the elevator. He pressed the button to hold the elevator open for you. "Come, we have work to do."
You had a few hours until the meeting and with almost all the work done, you knew you couldn't let this go on. "I'll teach you." Your voice was low at first until you realized what you said and then more enthusiastic. "I'll teach you to drive, Jumin."
