Part 97: The tower of terror

[#Disney references for that title]

When the hideous tower stopped growing, Bakugo was close enough to the edge to see it was going to be a really, really long drop.

He might be able to propel himself enough to survive it...but nothing attacked him, but he'd be a sitting duck for any of the gunmen.

Overhaul must have known Shine couldn't get away from him up here, and Eri certainly couldn't. He seemed pleased. "Now, we won't be interrupted by any more heroes. Eri, come here." He held out his hand. "Enough nonsense. Come back now, or I will throw both of these fiends off this tower without their quirks."

Eri whimpered. "No..."

"Don't you listen to him," Shine pushed herself up. "I told you, it's worse that way."

"You be quiet," Overhaul smacked her with part of the roof and she fell sideways, but she got up again. Pulling out her sword
with some difficulty.

"It occurs to me," Overhaul said. "That I know why you seem familiar...you distinctly remind of that fool I took the speed of yesterday...friend of yours?"

Shine looked up, eyes blazing. "My boyfriend, actually."

"Oh, wow..." Overhaul wasn't at all sorry, of course. "How fitting. Both of you are so pathetic. Eri, come."

Eri shook her head.

Bakugo sat up warily. If he got Overhaul's attention, his quirk might be assimilated, and then he'd be useless...but Shine was not in any shape to fight him either.

Kurogiri would keep her from being able to portal...possibly, she couldn't anyway, but...maybe if he got rid of the smoke man, she'd be able to use her powers more easily.

But how to do that without Overhaul stopping him?

"Shall I remove the vermin?" Kurogiri asked Overhaul. "He so unfortunately resisted Shigaraki's plea to join our cause when he had the change...how fitting for him to meet this end."

"Do what you want, I don't care about that trash," Overhaul said. "Keep him away from me, that's all"

Well, problem solved...

Kurogiri moved toward Bakugo, but he seemed to be unable to use his smoke as well as he liked.

Shine's sword was glowing slightly.

"Disrupt me, but I disrupt you back," she panted. "Fair is fair, is it not? But I am stronger than you...don't think you'll be able to block me forever."

Kurogiri seemed to hiss in pain. "Fine, we'll do it the hard way."

He moved at Bakugo with his actual body, pulling out a gun.

Bakugo had one chance, and his reaction time was as good as usual, he blasted the gun away before Kurogiri could fire it. Then he launched himself at the villain and sent him sprawling over the edge of the tower.

Kurogiri plummeted, but seemed able to catch himself part of the way down.

Overhaul swore. Then started to move things at Bakugo, but Shine lunged forward and swiped, nearly slicing his mask off. "Hey, eyes over here, you monster!"

Overhaul turned back to her and started to collect more debris. But he was breathing a little hard...was he finally tired?

Shine swatted some of it away with her sword. "You won't be able to take me down with just shadows and tiles," she was hoping Bakugo would get away with Eri.

Bakugo started edging back towards her. He wished he knew if anyone below would see and cooperate if he tried to jump, maybe cause a distraction.

Eri's quirk wasn't still going off, oddly enough...had she actually stopped it herself this time? How?

Perhaps like All Might had once told Deku, when you move to save someone, your body automatically controls the force.

The tower itself wasn't as big as the space Overhaul had pulled it from, it was only about the size of a large arena ring, like for the sports festival maybe. But more circular. It was still big enough to get a good distance away from it on. Eri slowly started to edge away too.

Shine kept Overhaul's attention, striking, moving, how she had the energy, who knew? Maybe her divine gifts were powering her up.

Bakugo didn't even doubt it at this point...he just wished he could use portalling or something. But that was quitter talk.

Then just when it looked like he had nowhere to go, something weird happened, black goo appeared, and Ponytail, the Rabbit hero, and both villains popped out of it, coughing on it.

"I hate that so much...how do you get used to it?" Mirko spat.

"You don't" Dabi said.

"Bakugo!" Momo saw him and waved.

Bakugo nodded, but wanted to cuss her out for being stupid enough to come up here. Only if he did that, Overhaul would notice.

As it was he saw them. "More diseased people? Really?"

"He's slowing down," Shine didn't even look at him as she spoke. "Help me and we might be able to take him down."

"No" Overhaul yelled in rage. "You won't!" The rage seemed to give him a power boost, more chunks broke off and flew around Shine, hitting her all over, she fell back and tried to shield her face.

"Hey!" Dabi said. Sending fire that way and burning some of it. "Why don't you watch your back there, Overhaul?"

Chisaki replied by swatting Dabi aside with some of it.

Momo made a shield and ducked as some debris shoved her closer to the edge. She swallowed. But began making rope also.

Mirko jumped around, evading dust, and trying to get close enough to kick Chisaki off the roof.

But then some stuff shot toward Eri.

Bakugo began blasting at it, but there was a lot.

Eri cried out and ducked, and ran...at least she was still resisting, that was good.

Mirko looked over. "Blast it! kids," She jumped across the space.

Really it was impressive how far she could still jump after all the fighting tonight. She scooped Eri up and out of the way of more pieces of debris that reached out like claws.

Overhaul's own power seemed to extend into it.

But then another one smacked Mirko as she was trying to dodge--after all her angles were limited this high up--and she and Eri both tumbled across to the edge. Mirko at least shielded her, she was a good pro.

Bakugo tried to get to them, but the floor grabbed his feet and he had to blast at it.

Tendrils grabbed Mirko by her ankles and began dragging her and Eri towards Chisaki, while a wall blocked Dabi, Shine and Momo from it.

"If you won't stop running, I'll just have to assimilate you until later," Chisaki was saying.

"No!!!!" Eri screamed.

Mirko tried frantically to kick free or else let go of Eri, but Eri was kind of pinned to her.

Then all at once, the tendril turned into dust.

Shigaraki looked miffed. "Now let's get one thing straight, Overhaul," he spoke for the first time. "You don't just get to attack one of my men, and take the other one, and then not suffer the consequences. Fair trade remember? You're gonna pay for all of this."

"Don't get me started on what I'm going to do to you," Overhaul said, angry. "Really? Protecting a Pro and stealing my property? You think that's not even worse?"

"I really don't see what the pro has to do with it at all, and the girl isn't yours, Shigaraki said, not impressed. "Maybe you should worry about yourself more."

He reached out, disintegrating more of Overhaul's reach.

Of course, he was not going to be any match for him.

Mirko got to her feet, picking Eri up. She bounded over to Bakugo. "Here," she shoved her at him. "You can fly right? Get her out of here, without a target he'll be distracted."

"If I jump they'll shoot at me," Bakugo said.

"So dodge," Mirko said. "Aren't you supposed to be talented or something? Anyway, they won't be able to reach you for awhile...Hey, genius," she yelled at Shigaraki. "Since you can use you stupid quirk again, get Hawks out here."

Shigaraki turned to say something rude then realized she had a point, that would be the most useful thing to do.

Bakugo prepared to jump.

***

Dabi helped Shine up, for some reason.

"Really trying to be a one woman show, aren't you," he said. "Stupid idiot."

"I know, I know..." Shine mumbled. "But I couldn't let Bakugo fight him...Thanks for coming though."

"Blame Shigaraki for that, he's got the warp thing. I guess you can't portal..."

"No...actually," she looked up, her eyes glowed gold. "I think Kurogiri's what blocked me this whole time...partially anyway.. I couldn't figure out why it was so dark...it was his quirk...and the sense of this place, both I think...but the point is, I've been building up a resistance this whole time to it, and I think I see through it finally...not a mintue too soon."

She looked at Bakugo. "Katsuki, just jump! It's fine!" She said.

Bakugo nodded and jumped, he had Eri with him.

Overhaul saw him and yelled "No! You won't get what's mine!"

And with that he shoved Shine and Dabi and Momo all aside with the roof and dove after Bakugo, hand outstretched.

"No! Don't do that!" Shine screamed with a terror that didn't seem to match the situation, Dabi thought, since Bakugo could easily get out of the way.

Bakugo blasted forward into the portal that opened just after he jumped, and was through it before Overhaul grabbed him...but Overhaul plunged in after him.

Shine made a strained choking sound. "That's... not good..."

Two very weird things happened really fast after that.

The first was Bakugo came out by Todoroki, safely, Eri still attached. And Overhaul fell out after him, but didn't attack. He just writhed.

The second thing was the whole tower shuddered and then began to fall apart in rapid succession.

All of them began to plunge.

Mirko jumped to avoid it, and dragged Shigaraki after her, and then grabbed Momo just before the girl fell to her death. But she couldn't stay on top of it for long.

Shine and Dabi fell the other way. Shine used her sword to catch a chunk of it and grabbed Dabi's arm with her other hand. "I can't hold this..."she said, in a strained voice.

Dabi looked down, the ground was coming up to meet them. "Well...frick..." he couldn't think of anything better to say.

But then red feathers plucked all of them up and shot them away from the tower as it sunk into the ground

Todoroki grabbed Eri and skated away while Bakugo followed with his quirk as several chunks fell toward the barracks and made holes in its roof.

Everyone made it out to the edge of the camp in a few seconds and the tower covered most of what had been the compound.

They all gasped for breath, and coughed because of the dust too.

"Wow..." Mirko summed it up.

"Chisaki..." Shoto said. "Was he still under all that?"

"I wasn't saving him," Bakugo said darkly.

"Well, me neither... but should we have?"

"Shoto..." Shine said amiably. "There is a time for that...and there's a time to say 'you know, we don't owe anyone anything, and he's a monster..' and this is one of those times...also, I'm going to faint." She fell over.

Dabi only partially caught her before letting her drop the rest of the way. "Great..."

"And so goes Overhaul's demise at his own hands." Shigaraki was poetic about it. "Well, serves him right...where's Kurogiri?"

"Where's everyone else?" Mirko wondered.

Hawks swooped down. "That was close wasn't it? The good news is...most of the compound is destroyed now so digging the others out should be the work of just few hours....maybe less if we can find them faster. The bad news is, I can't see the smoke guy anywhere, think he might have got away...wouldn't be hard for him. Also, I'm not sure if all the gunmen survived that."

"We didn't kill them," Mirko said. "That tower collapsing was Overhaul's fault."

"I'm not saying we did it," Hawks said. "But it might be a good idea to get out of here, you know, before someone comes to see what all that dust and stuff was ..."

"I have a plane coming," Momo said. "I told them to land near here, if they could find somewhere... I mean...my father will kill me...but we could get away..."

"You just ordered a plane?" Shoto looked at her.

"Uh..yeah...but I lost my phone, so I can't call to let them know this area is totalled..." Momo said.

"I'll flag 'em down," Hawks said. "But how long?"

"It's fast...maybe another 20 minutes?"

"Okay, well let's get the other out of there then," Hawks said.

"Actually, if you won't mind...uh Shigaraki...maybe you could just...warp them out?"

"I've over used that power already," Shigaraki grumbled. "I doubt I could handle that many..."

"Likstar's down for the count," Dabi announced. "So don't ask her."

"Maybe if I made a drill.." Momo said.

"What about the gang?" Bakugo said.

"After that you think they'll fight us?" Mirko said.

She was right about that. The gang either ran for it or didn't care to come out of hiding after seeing that. Plus, Overhaul was gone and they had no orders to follow.

Digging the others out proved to be hard.

***

They'd actually had their own fight below.

Some of the quirkless people had appeared down there to take care of them.

Aizawa had launched into action, slamming heads and using his scarf to take their guns. He didn't need his quirk to fight, in fact, it made it easier to see them without having to use it.

Jiro and Kaminari just watched in awe, it really never got old watching Eraserhead kick butt.

Some of the goons evaded him and came at them with machetes--not all of them seemed to know how to use guns...

Miss Joke punched or kicked them. Then wiped off her fist. "You have to know more than one trick, kids."

"So cool..." they said.

Hawks had used his wings to dodge and take down few of them too, before disappearing into black goo.

"How did we get separated from Momo," Jiro wondered. "I had her arm."

"Did you let go" Kaminari asked.

"I might have... something seemed to jerk me," Jiro admitted.

"Yeah, Todoroki too," Kaminari said. "But at least we're still here together... I mean all of us..."

They'd been thrown to different parts of the room but since it was all sealed off it didn't amount to much, and they'd all regrouped quickly only to realize their friends were gone.

"Something's going on up there," Mirko said. Holding her earjack to the wall. "I...hear something crashing,"

The whole room shook.

"I'd say you're right..." Kaminari said.

"This reminds me of our old days, Eraser," Miss Joke said, smacking away one of the last of the thugs in black. "Remember?"

"You only bring it up every single time we meet," Eraser grumbled.

"That's wasn't a no..." Miss Joke said.

One of them tackled her then and held a knife to her throat.

"Crap..." she shouldn't have started talking.

"You're the one who's been de-quirked, right?" The person said, as Aizawa hesitated. "You're gonna come with us...we have special training in store for you."

"What?" Miss Joke said oddly. "Hey, let go of me..." they began taking her away.

"Give Miss Joke back!" Kaminari cried, but some of the others got up and blocked him.

"You should knock out your opponents next time," they taunted Eraser.

Miss Joke wasn't sure what to do without her quirk...why was she so helpless without it? If only...wait...

She slipped her hand into her pocket...it was hard with something pinning her with a machete, but they weren't really watching her hands, more her feet.

"None of you try anything, we could just kill her instead..." he warned.

Miss Joke put her hand back on his arm to yank it away--and something zapped him. He yelled and dropped his weapon.

Aizawa dropped kicked him and tied him up.

Jiro smacked one of the guys blocking her with surprising force, then picked up one of the dropped machetes. "All right losers, back the heck off!"

They backed up a little, she looked kind of scary.

"Yeah!" Kaminari was loving this. "So cool, Jiro"

"Shut up," she said.

"Right, sorry." He picked up a gun. "How do you fire these things?"

"Kaminari you are not licensed to carry that." Aizawa said.

"But Mr. Aizawa this is an emergency," Kaminari said, pointing it rather cluelessly at the bad guys. "Can't I at least try?"

"No, and don't point that at us!" Aizawa said.

The gunmen backed up anyway, just in case he pulled the trigger.

"Hey, it's not worth it," one said "They're basically quirkless anyway, let's just regroup."

They ran for it.

Aizawa picked up one of their clubs they also had dropped and tossed it like a boomerang, knocking most of them out.

Miss Joke tripped the last one as the tried to run by her, than karate chopped him. "Suck on that+"

They all looked at each other.

"Dang, it feels good to be a gangsta," Kaminari put down his sunglasses and struck a pose.

Jiro rolled her eyes than started laughing uncontrollably because she was so stressed.

"Are you all right?" Aizawa asked Miss Joke, checked her for injuries.

She blushed. "I'm fine, wasn't that clever what I did there?"

"I never thought you'd actually find a good use for that stupid buzzer."

"I know right?! And you said it was a waste of money..."

"I stand corrected," Aizawa almost smiled then, "but we can't relax. We have to get out of here...they took Eri again, and Yaoyerozu and Todoroki..."

But then they heard sounds from above, like a drill...

Jiro put her jack back to the wall and repeated what she heard.

***

"Oh just disintegrate it already," Mirko yelled at Shigaraki.

"Do not give me orders! I don't have to do anything!" Shigaraki snapped.

"Uh...but if you do," Momo looked up from drilling. "We can escape before the police arrive...I'm not leaving without them...please?"

"Boss, is it really worth getting arrested to prove a point?" Dabi urged. "Let's just go..."

"Ugh, fine," Shigaraki attempted to decay a lot of the concrete blocking them.

After a little more effort from Mirko and Hawks, they finally broke through and found the others, covered in dirt, but otherwise unharmed. They pulled them out.

"Well...that was exciting..." Kaminari said.

Jiro slugged him, lightly though.

Aizawa had brought one goon with him. "We should question them about all this."

Dabi snorted. "They won't know anything, they're just puppets...but she might." He nodded.

They all turned and saw none other than Silk trying to slink away from the wreckage...she must have used up her quirk she wasn't hiding at all.

She saw them and broke into a run, but Hawks and Aizawa stopped her.

"She'd know," Dabi said.

"Then we'll take her with us, Hawks said. "But look''' He pointed, they saw the lights of a plane overhead.

"I'll go flag it down..." he said.

Silk moaned. "I din't even hurt any of you...."

"If that's true then we won't have to get rough," Aizawa said. Scarily.

Eri ran up to him and grabbed his leg. "Mr. Aizawa..."

Aizawa patted her head. "It's going to be fine now, Eri..."

"Is...is Overhaul...dead?" Eri asked in a small voice.

They all looked at each other.

"That's TBD," Mirko said.

"Guess we'll know later..." Miss Joke said. "When we watch the news..."

"I doubt they'll cover it, if they didn't cover that this place even existed..." Aizawa said.

Hawks brought the plane down, and nobody shot at it, actually, the few thugs who were even there just thought it meant the police had arrived and all ran into the woods.

Silk was not happy about being dragged on with the rest of them, but there wasn't much much she could do to resist.

The others were just glad to tumble onto it. It took off, leaving the death camp behind finally.

"It feels like we've been there a week..." Momo looked out the window.

"It was...4 or 5 hours, I think..." Shoto said "How did all that happen so fast?"

"4 or 5 hours for a hero mission is actually really long," Miss Joke said. "So, don't be too cocky..."

"I just saw a little Aizawa in you there," Shine who'd finally woken up, muttered. "That buzzkill thing..."

"Sorry, I'm tired..." Miss Joke said.

"Well, I knew we'd beat them," Mirko said smugly. "Piece of carrot cake."

Everyone just shook their heads at her ability to make a pun right then.
