Part 92: Is there anything I can name this that wouldn't sound horrible?

While the others are looking for their friends, let's have a brief flashback to what happened to the person all this is about:

Eri had been totally carefree while she and Mr. West were getting food, until there was black smoke and a scary voice, and then...worst of all--so bad she thought it was a nightmare at first--her old master!

Overhaul had dragged her away from Mr. West before she could even see what happened to him. But he assured her that Mr. West would be hurt badly because of her.

Eri wanted to believe it was one of her old nightmares...but as it didn't go away, she realized it was real.

Overhaul brought her to this creepy, dark building and dragged her under the ground.

Eri struggled to get away with all the effort she could muster, harder than she'd ever tried to before, because she just knew that whatever Overhaul was going to make her do this time, it was going to be even worse than before.

She broke free a few times, but Overhaul just moved her back with the wall, and then he disabled her legs so she couldn't run.

Eri was not even frightened by this so much as she was expecting it... She couldn't use her quirk on herself. Either it didn't affect her, or if it did, it had to be on purpose, with a level of control she didn't have.

At first it was so unreal to be there that she was less afraid of Overhaul than she was desperate to get away, but once she'd been brought to a small, dark room that was basically a cage, and shoved in, she knew it was too late...and the fear came on her strongly.

All the time away seemed like a dream... This is what the end of it was.

Overhaul said those catch words to her.

"Come now Eri," he said in his dreadful voice, "you knew all along you'd never get away from me. All that time in prison just made me realize better how to do things. Just a minor setback. They even took my quirk, but I got it back. Without you."

Eri whimpered.

Overhaul was still missing his arms then. "But I don't know. I kind of miss having my arms... I heard you've been working on controlling your quirk? You think you could help me out?"

Eri shook her head, trembling. "I won't help you!" she said, "You're a very bad man!"

"Bad? Me?" Overhaul said, leaning down, "Eri, I told you, I'm the only one who can really keep your power in check. You belong with me. You must see all I did was to prevent you from hurting more people, you naughty girl. You didn't listen to me, and now that red haired fool is hurt too... Do you want me to have to hurt more of your friends?"

Eri shuddered. "No..."

"So, then, you'll do as I asked."

"No," Eri protested, "Mr. Aizawa said never to use my quirk for evil!"

Eri knew what evil was the way most kids do-- from stories. But she knew it was what Overhaul was.

Overhaul seemed to dislike that. "Is that what he told you I am? I'll deal with him in good time... They'll all regret the way they crossed me. They'll pay for it in full...but in the meantime, Eri, do I need to give you a demonstration of what happens when you disobey me?"

He looked toward the door. One of his people, a new one, was shoved in by the wall itself.

Overhaul began taking them apart.

"No! No! Stop!" Eri screamed.

Overhaul paused. "Well?"

"I'll do what you wanted," Eri said miserably, "Don't hurt them."

"Good girl." Overhaul put them back together. The person had screamed, but now they just stared at him in some shock, like maybe they hadn't expected that.

"Get out," he said.

They ran.

Eri reached out a hand...

* * *

Somehow Eri successfully rewound Overhaul's arms...and her quirk did not go out of control the way it used to, but she still overdid it and felt sluggish and feverish afterward.

But it wasn't as bad.

She wasn't happy about it, because it only meant Overhaul would wait less time before doing more horrible things with her. But Overhaul thought it was a strange development.

"Tell me, who's been teaching you?" he demanded.

Eri was too scared not to tell him about Aizawa and Likstar and West. And as a 6 year old, she didn't know enough to know why telling him might be a bad idea. She only understood she'd be punished if she didn't. The idea that information can be used against people was beyond her.

Eri was not willing to hurt people enough to have told him so easily otherwise, but she was very afraid of him.

Overhaul didn't like hearing about Miss Likstar and Mr. West telling her about God, though.

Eri had accepted what they said the way kids usually do and not questioned it, really.

Overhaul was livid. "Filling your head with nonsense like that... I'm surprised the school would employ them."

"It's not nonsense," Eri said, surprising him, "It's nice... It means that we don't have to be alone."

"Not alone, huh?" Overhaul said, then he glared at her, "Eri, where are they now, huh? You're alone here, aren't you? Except for me."

"But with God we aren't alone anywhere." Eri did not think he understood. "So we don't have to be lonely anymore."

This was what Shine had told her.

"That's all a lie," Overhaul said, angrily, frightening her all over again, "You think there's something here that you can't see? That's ridiculous. When is there ever that? You are alone. And no strange, made up god is going to save you. As far as you're concerned, I am the only god you need to worry about, because your life is in my hands. And everyone else's here. So don't go thinking you'll be saved by that kind of fantasy!"

Eri recoiled. "But I don't think they were lying."

"Of course they were lying, Eri, so you would be a fool and believe them," Overhaul said, "They just want your power for themselves."

Even Eri was old enough to know that he wanted the same thing...but she didn't know why.

"Why?" she said, shaking.

"That's all anyone wants from you. You don't think anyone really loves someone like you. You're a monster," Overhaul scoffed at her, "UA isn't any different...but not to worry, I'll make sure they never get you again."

Eri wished they would. Even if it was true, UA was nicer than he was!

The outcome of this, though Eri didn't understand it, was that Chisaki concluded Eri's spirits had been too revived by her time among better people. He would have to break them again.

But he was confident she couldn't have gotten over his teaching to her so soon. It was still in there somewhere. He'd just have to remind her of it, is all.

And he could start by not feeding her properly to weaken her resolve.

Chisaki still saw nothing horrendous about how he treated Eri. It was all for his cause, after all, and he thought she was a tool, a monster, anyway.

He didn't think how he himself was the monster.

And he didn't intend to take it easy on her at all.

But Eri proved to be more resistant than he thought. Even after a whole day of no food and not much water, she was still not willing to just let him use her.

Threatening her with his subordinates was the only way to get her to comply, but even then once they were not around, she seemed to think it wasn't a problem. She was still too young-- she didn't get it entirely when he made vague threats.

So keeping someone in front of her to threaten was the only solution he had.

Eri finally submitted to him taking samples after that. But as scared as she was, she just was not the same ball of terror he remembered. [How sick is it that he keeps track of how terrified she is.]

Her terror was real, but there was not the lack of will in it he'd so carefully instilled in her.

To make matters worse for him, he heard her praying in a small voice while she was locked in the veritable cage he'd constructed.

To Chisaki, it was a terrible setback that Eri had gained such a thing as hope. She never had real hope before. She'd just accepted she couldn't escape and that she had to come back to him.

Attempts to escape are not always a sign of real hope, just of the victim of suffering reaching their limit and acting out, but they may never actually expect to get away. They just want relief. Eri had been like that, once. She had had no real belief in being free. Even after leaving him, that had been imprinted on her mind for a long time.

It wasn't something that could just be undone. That he was sure of.

But even though she was scared and sick from him mistreating her the same way again, she wasn't giving up yet. She seemed to think that someone might come for her.

And this would not make using her easy, if she thought that. What if she figured out how to use her quirk better and could get out? They might never find her if she really went out of control.

Overhaul was perplexed about how to quickly crush her hope again, when the perfect solution presented itself.

[Who else really hates him right now? The sad thing is, I'm not changing him at all here, this is just how he thinks. So messed up.]

* * *

Eri woke up from a sort of hunger and exhaustion induced slumber to hear Overhaul coming back.

She slunk back against the wall of the cage.

Overhaul came in. He seemed oddly jumpy even to Eri, who could only assume it meant he was angry. More torture was going to ensue!

But instead Overhaul sounded pleased. "Come on, Eri, you foolish child. It's time to show you what will happen if you keep trying to defy me."

Eri started screaming "No!" because she knew that meant something awful.

Overhaul ignored her cries, or else found them amusing, as he dragged her out of the cage and out the door of the dark, little room.

Eri was taken along the underground tunnels that all looked the same, and she was sure she'd never be able to get out of them.

Then Overhaul brought her into a somewhat larger room. One that had been designed for his "punishment" to anyone who stepped out of line.

Eri couldn't have quite said what, but Overhaul didn't seem quite the same as before. He used to punish people more in the moment, not premeditate it. But she didn't have the words to think that. She just felt he was more...scary about it than even before.

Overhaul would have just killed someone in passing before, not had a place to do it to make a point.

(Perhaps he drew inspiration from the kind of place the camp was meant to be when it was built.)

"You know this is a place of death, Eri," he spoke now, "Many years ago, people like me, with a vision to cure their corrupt society, brought people like you and your new friends who wouldn't behave to this place-- and killed them."

Eri drew a shaky breath. She didn't want to cry in front of him anymore. She already realized it only made him treat her more cruelly.

"But they didn't just kill them," Overhaul went on, "They made them suffer first. I think maybe they had the right idea. After all, it's how things have been done for a long time."

Eri saw, to her horror, that the wall in the room opened and spit someone out into the room...Miss Likstar?

Shine was rather scratched up from Overhaul dragging her all the way here. She hadn't put up much of a fight, because she thought he would take her to Eri.

But he'd taken her sword with the intent to dismantle it, and it had vanished out of his grasp. That had puzzled him but didn't throw him off his plans. He assumed it was just her quirk.

"Ah, there you are," Overhaul spoke to Shine, just as if this was a normal situation to be in.

Some of his goons, perhaps new ones, were standing in the corner now, in case Shine tried to leave.

Between him, Eri, and her there was a high wall she wouldn't be able to jump.

Eri looked over it. "Miss Likstar!"

"Eri?" Shine looked relieved. "There you are. Hi, sweetie."

Overhaul grabbed Eri's head. "I suggest you don't try anything if you don't want me to take her apart in front of you while you watch."

Eri trembled.

Shine swallowed. "What do you want, then, you monster? You wouldn't bring me to my target without some sick, twisted reason of your own."

"You think I'm the monster?" Overhaul said, "You don't understand anything. You're as sick as the others, sicker even. Teaching people to think there's hope, when the only hope is for this sick world to be cleansed."

"On that we agree, but our definition of what the world is sick from is not the same," Shine said, glaring at him, "In my book, your corruption and cruelty is the disease, and you are sick to the death of it, Overhaul. You should look at yourself before you diagnose anyone else. Would a healthy person do these things?"

Overhaul was not pleased to be called diseased by her. "Silence," he snapped, like a bratty child.

Eri whimpered as he tightened his grip.

"You don't know anything," Overhaul went on, "What are you? Just a simple, little fool trying to teach some ancient, diseased doctrine to unsuspecting fools. Making my job more difficult."

"Little? I think I'm taller than you are," Shine said.

That answer only infuriated him further.

"Do you think this is a joke?" he said.

Eri screamed as he dismantled a small part of her arm.

Shine almost threw up. She held up her hands. "All right, all right, I'm sorry. Stop, please."

Overhaul stopped. "That's more like it. Let's all stay reasonable here. The only reason I brought you here was to show Eri what becomes of people who try to take her away from me. I'll start with you, since you walked into my trap first, and then that d----d Eraserhead will also suffer. I'll take him apart slowly."

Eri whimpered.

Shine wasn't sure she should say anything since he might just torture Eri more if she sassed him. She looked at Eri and tried to smile reassuringly, but the little girl looked far too terrified for that to work.

Shine raised her hand like she was in class, as Overhaul was still going on about what he would do to all of her friends.

"What?" he paused, "Do you have a question?"

"Just a couple," Shine said, "I'd like to know more about your philosophy. I mean, if you're going to kill me, I might as well know why. I'm sure you have lots of good insights on society, right?"

Overhaul smirked. "That is true. It's smart for you to want to know that, but it won't stop me from killing you."

"I understand that. I just like to know about things like this," Shine shrugged, "But I suppose if you don't really have an explanation, that's all right too."

"Don't be impertinent! I have one!" Overhaul said angrily.

He launched into his full speech about society being sick and corrupted.

Eri had heard it all before, and it only made her feel more like panicking. But she was afraid if she did, he'd hurt Miss Likstar more. So she held real still.

Shine, for her part, if she hadn't had Eri there, would have mocked Chisaki mercilessly for his philosophy, as none of it made any sense to her at all, and she thought, He's just crazy. That's all there is to it.

And for this he put his father in a coma? And tormented the life out of an innocent, little girl?

Shine started to cry.

"Eh? What are you doing?" Overhaul noticed. He seemed to take it as a good sign. "Ah, you've understood now, right?"

"I understand," Shine said, "I am crying because I can't help it when I think of what you did to Eri to make this dream of yours come to pass. To someone who never hurt you at all, and yet...I know what you put her through."

"She's been telling tales." Overhaul jerked Eri's arm. She winced.

"The tales were written in the marks you left." Shine was mad. "Not in her words. It's your own doing."

"If she was more compliant, I wouldn't have had to," Overhaul said, "but I don't think you'd understand. People like you are so small minded. You think one person is more important that cleansing this whole world."

"That is our belief, yes," Shine said, "Not that sacrifice is a bad thing...but to sacrifice something that is not yours, that is bad. If you wish to die for the world, Chisaki, I won't stop you. But why did you take someone else's life?"

"I do what has to be done." Overhaul wasn't moved by her words at all. "And if you were smarter, you'd know it was necessary."

"So why do you need me, then?" Shine changed the subject. "I see you have arms now... You have what you need. Why am I here?"

"I'm glad you asked," Overhaul said, "I am going to disassemble you to show Eri I mean what I say. I wanted her to watch."

Eri screamed, "No! No, don't hurt her please! I'll do anything you say!"

"No, Eri," Shine cried, alarmed at this, "Don't promise that. Never promise that. Doing evil is never worth it! Nevermind what he does to me. I chose this because I want you to be free from him!"

"Be quiet." Overhaul used the floor to knock her back.

But Shine got back up and kept yelling. "Eri, people who love you don't care if we suffer because of you, like I told you before, remember? That's just part of caring about someone. But it hurts us way more to see you do things you shouldn't do. Don't let him make you do that! I need you to promise me!"

Eri whimpered. "I can't... I'm too scared."

Overhaul was surprised he hadn't hit Shine yet.

Shine pulled out her sword and deflected his objects. He frowned. So she had more than one of  those.

"I know you're scared." Shine kept talking, even while moving. "I know what he's been telling you, and I know it all seems true. But that's just because all he knows is to scare people, Eri. That's all Overhaul knows. He doesn't know anything about love. Or peace. Or kindness. But you do. I believe Love is stronger than fear. If you focus on love, Eri, you can be brave."

"I don't...understand," Eri said.

Shine ducked. Overhaul was getting angrier by the second. "Stop moving! Stop talking! I'll rend her limb from limb."

"You would never kill her. You need her too much, you liar!" Shine jumped out of the way of his chunks of floor and wall tendrils. "Even if you take her apart, you'll just put her back together. And that's not something I want, but I know you won't kill her, so if you want to threaten me, you'll have to do better than that. How does it feel?" She came closer to them, looking up at where they were. "How does it feel to know not everyone is afraid of you, Chisaki?"

Chisaki seemed to lose it completely when she said that. "I said to stop talking!"

The room exploded into a flurry of flying tiles and bricks and metal.

Shine ducked as stuff nearly hit her head... Somehow nothing actually touched her though.

But one thing changed. In his fury, Overhaul let go of Eri to use both hands to manipulate the room.

Eri didn't know where she found the courage, but she took off like a shot and jumped off the edge of the platform they were on.

Overhaul grabbed at her, but her quirk went off out of control, and the things that touched her rewound back into their original forms.

She crashed into Shine, which was lucky, as otherwise it was a rather long fall to the floor.

Shine hit the ground with the impact. Eri started crying. "I can't stop!"

But her quirk had no effect on Shine. Shine patted her hair. "It's okay, sweetie. I'm fine, see?" She raised her sword and swatted away another tendril...but then, the other ones just rewound.

For the moment, they were basically untouchable.

Shine took advantage of it. She picked her self up with difficulty and put Eri on her back the way Deku had. It was just easier to carry her that way. The tiny girl was still light as a feather to carry.

Eri realized her quirk wasn't affecting Shine and began to calm down a little. She looked up at Overhaul, who seemed to just be shrouded in all the darkness in the room, like in a movie.

Shine was glaring at him. "I...recognize you," she said oddly, "You're the same everywhere, aren't you...? I see what is going on here. How did this happen to you?"

"How did what?" Overhaul sneered, "You mean how did I get so powerful? That's a secret."

Eri clutched Shine's neck hard. "We have to run..." she whimpered.

Shine wasn't at all sure she could, at this moment, portal. She had a feeling she couldn't, actually. Just from the atmosphere in the room.

She muttered a prayer.

Overhaul glowered at her. "If I can't tear into you right now, I'll just wait till you exhaust yourself. Enjoy your stay!" The floor opened beneath them, and they dropped into a dark hole...

* * *

Eri must have screamed and screamed for a while, not sure even what happened to them because it was utterly pitch black.

Finally, Shine lit her sword up very faintly, not wanting to use too much energy.

All she saw was a dark pit-like room-- hardly even a room, just a hole with a roof closed over it.

Eri's quirk was still going off like crazy, but on dirt, it didn't work that well. Dirt is not really that much different in its original form. It was just separating into smaller pieces.

Shine touched Eri and murmured a few words to try to stop it.

Eri's quirk stopped.

Eri then fainted.

Left alone pretty much, Shine put out her light so she would be able to rest. The fight back there had exhausted her, along with all the rest of the events of today. Without Wally, she just got tried faster. It was like she drew from his energy when they were together.

[It's called synergy.]

Shine lay down on the cold dirt next to Eri with her arm on her, in case anything moved. She couldn't hear anything. This place was like a tomb.

She supposed she should decide what to do when Eri woke up...if she woke up anytime soon at all. Could she escape with her portals? Or would she only end up hurting herself if she tried? There would be no hope for Eri if Overhaul recaptured her then. Aizawa wouldn't be able to fight him off. Shine was sure of it... She didn't think she herself could single-handedly do it. Not without some kind of Divine help.

With nothing else to do, she began to sing to pass the time and keep her mind off how dark and small this tomb was.

"Oh, shame is a prison, as cruel as a grave. Shame is a robber, and he's come to take my name.

Oh, love is my redeemer, lifting me up from the ground. Love is the power where my freedom song is found.

Oh, there ain't no grave gonna hold my body down.(x2)

When I hear that trumpet sound, gonna rise up out of the ground.

There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down.

Fear is a liar, with a smooth and velvet tongue. Fear is a tyrant. He's always telling me to run.

Oh, Love is resurrection. Love is a trumpet sound. Love is my weapon. I'm gonna take my giants down.

...

Oh, there was the battle, a war between death and life, and there on the tree, the lamb of God was crucified.

And he went on down to hell, he took back every key, he rose up as a lion, and he set all the captives free.

If you walked out of the grave, I'm walking too..."

[Call it old fashioned, but I do love the old Gospel style of this song. Say what you will about the message, but the music slaps. Personally I like the lyrics too...]
