Part 130: End of the Monsters

[If you play the song I linked, put it like 30 seconds into the video to get the actual words. It has a really slow open. Also, this artist, Carmen, is a forgotten legend!]

Momo and Midnight had managed to lead one of the other 7 nomu there, and now they were at the roof of the building.

Midnight was tired. "You know...if I over do it, my quirk can kind of make me sleepy too..." she said, "I'm not sure I'm good for much more..."

"The nomu are ignoring us," Momo said, "Look, they're all trying to get up the building now... The LOV must really be up there."

"Still don't get that part. I thought the LOV released them," Midnight said.

"No, they didn't," Momo said, "It's a long story...but the point is, they'll bring this whole building down. We have to get clear and be ready." She tugged Midnight away. Nothing tried to stop them.

Shoto and Dabi had been stuck together, much to their chagrin.

"I really don't like Kurogiri anymore," Dabi said.

"Nomu!" Shoto had seen one of the big ones barreling toward them.

"Why, that b----d! He's trying to get us killed!" Dabi said, as they both started running and shooting fire back at it.

The nomu seemed immune.

"Well, great, that's perfect," Dabi growled, "I just bet this was the new, Endeavor-slaying one."

"There were more!?"

"Oh, cool your jets. How else do you think the LOV would take out the no#1 hero? At least slow him down..." Dabi said snidely.

"I don't care," Shoto said, "Just tell me how to stop it."

"D--- if I know. I don't have the 411 on these things," Dabi said. "That's not my department... I was shocked I was allowed to use the other one. Shigaraki shares his toys surprisingly a lot..."

"That thing is not a toy!" Shoto said, "Nothing?"

"Look, before it had a weakness: it would obey someone," Dabi said, "Now it's just...out of control.2.. Try freezing it, maybe."

Shoto shot ice. The nomu broke through it.

"Didn't really think that would work," Dabi said flatly. Then he tripped and fell over. "Right.... Curse this road!"

It was a mess.

The nomu almost caught him.

Shoto froze it in place.

It began to crack it at once.

"Get up!" Shoto yelled.

"Getting." Dabi was up. He started running...then he started panting... "Oh, no...not now..."

"What?" Shoto said.

"Unlike you, Snowflake...I'm not...cut out for this..." Dabi slowed, wiping his brow. "I don't get it... I was doing okay for a while...a lot longer than I normally would be...but now it's hitting me..."

"What do you mean?" Shoto said. The nomu was catching up again. He froze a thicker wall, trying to buy time. Thicker, thicker.... It was more like a fortress. The cold started to get to him.

Dabi sighed. "That's a better, actually."

He put a hand on the ice.

"What do you mean...? Isn't that painful?" Shoto always felt like he was touching sharp spikes if he used his left side to touch ice too soon after heating it up.

"Want to know the irony of my quirk?" Dabi said bitterly, "The old man probably never bothered to explain, huh? Nope, what's dead is dead, right?... I have a scary strong fire quirk...and a high ice tolerance...."

"What?" Shoto said, "How is that possible?"

"Quirks aren't compatible? Who knows...? It happens," Dabi said grimly, "Point is, I like cold, but I can only heat myself up... Use it for too long, I get a fever..."

"But you wear a jacket all the time," Shoto said.

"What? That's what bothers you?" Dabi said, "not the fact that we're screwed... D--- it, if I could use my fire enough, I maybe could destroy that thing...but at this rate, I could kill myself doing that..."

He sighed. "Likstar would really lay into me if I did that after I promised to be all careful."

"And you care...?" Shoto said blankly.

"Let's just say if I did survived, I don't want to deal with the backlash," Dabi said, "and more importantly, I don't want to a pass out... Well, we're screwed. Wish I could say it made it better that you were stuck here, but dying with you is really at the top of my hate list."

"Likewise," Shoto said coldly, "so let's not actually go through with it. Perhaps we're just overthinking this.... Maybe we should combine our fire. If I start it and you give it a kind of boost at the end, maybe it'll be hot enough. I've not really reached the limits of my fire quirk yet. I kind of overdid it when I tried, but--"

"Shut up already and just do it," Dabi interrupted, "This is taking me back to the worst part of training with Endeavor."

Shoto gave him a murderous glance, but then turned and blasted fire at the nomu as it broke through the last wall.

Hotter...hotter. He strained... It was starting to feel painful...

The nomu slowed, but it wasn't burning up. It was pressing forward.

Then Dabi shot blue flame into the red... The fire blazed so hot it felt cold. Shoto almost passed out from the sheer intensity of it.

The nomu finally began to writhe and choke on the flames...

The fire went out. It was kind of just lying there.

"I release you," Dabi said suddenly, remembering what Momo had said.

The nomu went still.

"S---, that worked?" Dabi was stunned.

Shoto fell over.

"Went...too hard..." he muttered, before losing consciousness.

"6!" Shine called, as the LOV and her and Mirko had to scatter, and the remaining 6 nomu were upon them.

Shine found herself at the edge of the roof, which was cracking.

She raised her sword, prepared to stab the nearest nomu.

Something went through her arm.

She looked down at it... An arrow?

She turned.

On a far roof one of the ninja was standing there, looking at her and holding a crossbow.

They aimed for her again but didn't fire. The message was clear: Back off.

Shine's eyes snapped fire. Then she ducked down.

"Someone help!" she cried.

"What??" Mirko jumped over a nomu and slammed it into the roof. "What the h---, Likstar?" She spotted her arm.

"Careful, there's a sniper." Shine pointed.

Mirko's ears went back.

"Give me that." She held out her hand.

"This?" Shine handed her her sword. "Why?"

"This is not lethal, right?" Mirko took aim.

"I have to let you--but no, it doesn't pierce humans-- Wait!" Shine yelped.

Mirko tossed it into the air and kicked it hard, at a perfect trajectory.

The ninja hardly even knew what hit them before they went flying back and were slammed into the roof. The sword pinned them down.

"Uh...Rumi," Shine stood up, "just because the sword is not lethal does not mean that being slammed into a roof at 60 mph won't be..."

"Oh, they're fine," Mirko said, "See? They're wiggling."

They were.

"Do you...think before you do anything?" Shine said.

"It worked, didn't it?" Mirko said.

She saw Shigaraki giving her a weird look. "What?"

"I just remembered-- you freaking threw a knife at someone before," he said.

"Huh...oh yeah, I did."

"Aren't you afraid of killing them?!"

"Not really. I wasn't aiming for a vital area," Mirko said.

Shine shook her head. "Why do I feel like I'm going to be held partially responsible for you hospitalizing someone one day?

"You worry too much," Mirko said, "And look out behind you."

Shigaraki turned: a nomu was right there.

Shine's sword reappeared in her hand, and she threw it like a  javelin. The nomu fell over.

"I release..." she muttered.

The creature went still.

"I think that's 5 now," Mirko said.

Compress held up a marble. "4, actually."

"Help!" Spinner was not doing well against another one.

Medea was laughing and hanging onto one and burning it.

"She's...scary..." Shine said.

"There's just 2 left... Where'd they go?" Mirko said

* * *

Those two had been knocked off the roof by Hawks and down to the heroes below... They were the two big ones left.

The heroes below had attacked them as a unit.

The nomu threw things and exhibited multiple quirks, all horrifying. Regeneration seemed to be the one they all had.

"Do I want to know why they all somehow have that one quirk?" Shine asked Shigaraki, "What, does AFO mix his own DNA with them?"

"I...don't know..." Shigaraki said.

"How about we get down there and finish them off?" Mirko said.

One of the beasts slammed into the building and it started to go down.

Mirko grabbed Shine and jumped off it. Shigaraki managed to warp himself and his League and even Monama off... Perhaps that part was an accident.

They all appeared on the ground, choking.

The nomu was back up already, and the building had almost fallen on the heroes. They were scrambling to get out of the way.

"Hey, babe," Wally waved at Shine, "These things aren't going down..."

"Sword!" Shine yelled at him.

"Oh...right. I forgot..." Wally focused, and a sword appeared in his hands...larger and chunkier than Shine's. He handled it more clumsily too.

"Okay..." Mirko said weirdly.

"Why don't these ones speak?" Shine asked Shigaraki.

"How should I know---?" Shigaraki broke off, because at that moment something really disturbing happened.

The nomu looked right at all three of them, though Mirko was probably an afterthought.

"We do speak..." they said in unison, in horrible, inhuman voices.

The flesh crawled on Shine's bones.

Shigaraki froze too... He'd heard it before, sort of, but it was different up close, in person, while they were attacking.

Mirko looked sick. "Did...did I hear that right...?"

"Ew..." Medea muttered.

All the heroes stopped fighting at once. They were shocked by this.

"You..." the nomu looked right at Shigaraki. "This is all because of you... Destroy you..."

Shigaraki backed up.

Shine got in front of him. She held out her sword. "It was not him."

"Destroy..." They didn't seem interested in debating it. They moved forward.

"You know, you'll never hear me tell anyone this again," Mirko said from behind Shigaraki, "but I think you should bail."

But Shigaraki was actually too petrified to run for it.

Shine's sword lit up. "Stop!" she said, " I command you..."

The nomu stopped...

Everyone was staring. No one moved.

Momo muttered a prayer, not sure for what. She just didn't think this was going very well.

Shine spoke in a very even, normal voice that stunned everyone even more than the nomu, that she could use it at such a time.

"I see you..." she said slowly, "I see your torment... I feel it... I know this is not what you want..."

"Dang..." Wally breathed, "This reminds me... Nevermind... Easy does it there, boys..." he was standing opposite Shine, just in case they charged.

It was dead silent.

The nomu suddenly moved, so fast no one was going to be able to stop them

Except Wally. He knocked both of them down and ran his new sword through one of them.

It screeched.

Shine walked up and stuck hers through the other one.

Then both of them spoke again, and it was weird how now it was a little more human sounding.

"Release...release...release..."

"Oh..." half the people watching gasped, not sure what to make of this.

Shigaraki just watched, transfixed.

The rest the LOV didn't move either. Except Silk covered her eyes. And Medea rubbed her arm.

"Release..." Shine spoke. Wally echoed it.

Both nomu went still.

For all that...it was almost anticlimactic, but no one felt bored... More like they were shell shocked.

"Well, that was disturbing." Dabi finally broke the silence, earning a ghostly laugh from a few people and some weird looks from others.

Shine turned and looked at Shigaraki and just nodded slowly.

Wally waved at everyone. "Hey, guys, snap out of it. There's still a city on fire we gotta take care of."

Then out of the dust one final nomu lunged. Spinner had not killed his, and apparently the fall hadn't done it either.

No one was expecting it-- then fire came and burned it up.

But it wasn't Dabi.

"It seems I'm late to this party," Endeavor's voice boomed.

Wally grabbed Dabi before he could even react and dashed him out of there.

"Where're all the nomu?" Endeavor was puzzled.

Some of the heroes laughed nervously.

"Boy, did you miss it..." Miss Joke said.

"That was the scariest thing I've ever seen," said a pro none of the others knew, "and I've been doing this for 12 years..."

"Hey." Mirko grabbed Shigaraki's arm. "Get out of here."

"Uh?" Shigaraki said blankly. He was still in shock.

"Do you want to wait for all those heroes to realize who's standing right here? Get going!" She shoved him at Compress. Silk tossed a screen into the air, and all of them vanished behind it.

Medea too.

"Wow...that was...a thing..." Hawks said to Mirko.

Mirko nodded, then covered her mouth. "Oh...crap..." She raced off behind some wreckage.

"Huh, guess that was too weird even for her," Hawks said.

"Momo," Shine led Monoma over, "here. I want you to try..." She explained what happened.

"Oh, wow, you were so brave," Momo said.

"Don't patronize me," Monoma grumbled.

Shine smacked him. "She was being serious. Why don't you back off? Momo would never gloat. It's not in her, and if you'd bother to get to know them, you'd know that. She's the sweetest soul in the world."

"Oww..." Monoma rubbed his head. "Fine, whatever..."

"I can try, but, Shine shouldn't you...?" Momo said.

"I can tell you want to be able to do this," Shine said, "and I'm not even that proficient, so go on..."

Momo put a hand on Monoma and murmured the kind of words she'd heard Shine use.

"I don't feel any different." Monoma was skeptical.

"Well, try to copy someone," Shine said.

Monoma hit Bakugo.

"What the--! You want to go!" Bakugo yelled at him.

Monoma made an explosion right in his face. "Oh, look at that. It worked."

"Ow. Hey, are you okay?" Camie asked Bakugo.

"Like that would hurt me!" Bakugo griped, "I'll kill that---"

"Baku," Camie interrupted, "that was majorly cool earlier how you, like, swooped in and saved me, so, like, thanks. I mean it."

"Uh..." Bakugo looked down. "It was just a chance..."

"As I recall, you asked specifically to go," Shine said slyly.

"Shut up, Likstar. No one else was free!" Bakugo said.

"Oh, so you didn't want to," Camie pouted, "You just had to.... Wow..."

"What does wanting it have to do with anything? It's my job!"

"So, it's just a job, huh!" Camie snapped.

"What's going on?" Monoma said weirdly.

"Pain..." Shine rubbed her forehead. "Just pain..."

"Todoroki?" Momo ran up to where he was sitting. "Are you okay?"

"I am now. I just got overheated...but I missed the action..." Shoto said sourly, "I don't even know how I got here..."

"I...don't know. Who were you with?"

"Dabi-- but I don't think it was him," Shoto said.

"Why not?"

"He wouldn't."

"Well, he's gone now." Momo looked around. "But he was really helpful... It was weird... Uh, by the way, I wanted to thank you for before."

"I should be thanking you. That thing almost crushed me, and you just...speared it..."

"I know it was so violent." Momo covered her face. "I can't believe I did that... I just couldn't think of anything else to do."

"But it was really cool," Shoto said.

"It...was?" Momo looked through her fingers.

"I mean, it did the job..." Shoto was terrible at this.

"I suppose..." Momo started crying. "I promised myself I wasn't going to do this...but it was...they were just...horrible..."

Shoto stared.

Shine rolled her eyes.

"Shoto," she mouthed, "hug her or something. Don't just sit there like block of wood." She motioned.

Shoto supposed if Shine was suggesting it, it was a good idea, so he did.

Momo was stunned, but then she buried her face on his shoulder and just started sobbing.

Shine nodded smugly and walked away.

Now what?  Shoto thought helplessly.

[Shine is just a shameless shipper like the rest of us.]

Camie and Bakugo argued for a while before she finally said, "Well, if that's how it is, then flip you! I don't need your help!"

"Did I say you did!?" Bakugo wasn't even sure what he was arguing anymore. "I just do what I want, got it?! If I want to kill a gosh danged monster, I will!"

"Fine!"

"Fine! Frick you!"

"Frick you!" Camie stomped her foot. "You're such a jerk." She moved to shove him, and Bakugo grabbed her arm to stop her, and she tripped and fell forward on top of him.

They both froze.

"Well...this is awkward..." Camie said.

"Get off me!" Bakugo shoved her away. He was beet red now.

"Well, that's what you get for being such a prick," she said snippily, "If you'd just freaking act normal, this s--- wouldn't happen."

"I was normal!"

"No, you weren't!"

"Camie," Shiskikura interrupted them, "there you are...and with Bakugo. Why am I not surprised...?"

Camie glared at him. "Yeah, well, Bakugo kind of saved my life earlier, so...where were all of you?"

"Why didn't you come back and meet up with us?" Shishikura ignored her statement. "Can't you stick to the plan?"

Bakugo really had had it with him.

"Listen, dumba--, she almost died because you and your little squad of pathetic losers weren't around to act like actual teammates and do your d--- jobs! So how about instead of giving her crap, you look at yourself for once. I should kick your a----."

"I'd like to see you try!" Shishikura said.

"Any day of the month!" Bakugo shot back, "Right now."

"Hold on, Bakugo." Camie grabbed him.

"What?" he said.

"I just think if you fight Shishikura, you should probably do it where a lot of heroes aren't going to see you," Camie said quite casually, "You know, so you can actually win. 'Cause he's a major snitch."

Dang it if that wasn't the most attractive thing Bakugo had ever heard.

Shishikura stared at her in amazement.  "I---you...you can't do that..."

"Good idea," Bakugo grinned scarily.

Shishikura backed up. "I'm reporting this to your mentor, Camie."

"Sure, and I'll report to yours that you just ditched me!" Camie shot back, "Why don't you piss off, Shishi? I am so done with your crap right now. I survived a flipping nomu!"

Shishikura didn't know how to take Camie being that aggressive. He walked away muttering, "That barbarian is turning her more and more unruly by the day..."

[There's a little meta joke for those of  you who read my fantasy AU also.]

"Ha, that was awesome." Camie turned to give Bakugo a high five, but he wasn't cooperating. "Oh, come on..."

"That punk." Bakugo was livid still. "That's just messed up. What's wrong with a guy like that? Was he dropped on his head when he was younger?"

"Who knows? But that was still awesome," Camie said, "Don't worry about him. He's just jealous because you're so cool, and he's just a lame wannabe."

Bakugo gave her a weird look. "What?"

"Yeah, it's sorta obvi." Camie tugged her hair. "I kind of feel bad for him."

Bakugo stared at her, then he smirked. "Yeah, well, who wouldn't?"

"'Kay, but now you're being cocky," Camie said, "Y'know, it would be majorly cool to just go somewhere and chill after all this is over... Wanna hang? I'll buy to pay you back for the save."

"I guess if it's free food, I could stand it," Bakugo said.

"Cool, we should ask them to join us." Camie pointed at Todoroki and Momo. "Looks like Momo could use some cheering up. 'Course he might be all the cheering up she needs. Look at Todoroki... Aw, he's so cutely clueless... It's a shame he's not really my type."

"I thought you said he was," Bakugo said.

"I don't really dig that dense as frick kind of guy," Camie sighed, "It's too bad, but he's got, like, no sense of humor... I can't even talk to him. He's like a picture, you know-- fun to look at, but that's about it."

[As Shakespeare's Portia said, "He is a proper man's picture, but who can converse with a dumb show?" At least if you're Camie's brand of conversationalist. To be fair to Shoto, hardly anyone seems to be able to hold on a real conversation with Camie except Bakugo.]

"Hey, if you two are ready," Shine walked up, "I think we should find the LOV. We need to talk about what just happened before something else attacks them."

"Great..." Bakugo said flatly.

* * *

The LOV was almost out of the city, and no one had stopped them. The cops were all focused on clean up, and it was getting dark by now.

"I am bushed," Compress sighed, "and we don't even know where we're going to crash..."

"It could be hayloft for all I care," Silk said wearily, "Just somewhere to lie down..."

Medea was silent.. She looked back and rubbed her head.

Then the DJs and heroes showed up (the kids, anyway)...and Dabi.

The LOV didn't even recognize him at first.

Hawks and Mirko had followed them too.

Mirko really just wanted to see this in person, and Hawks wanted to ask about the nomu getting out now that it as all over.

But he didn't really get the chance.

"Who's this guy?" Spinner was looking at Dabi.

"We convinced him it was time to just face it," Wally said, giving them a thumbs up.

Dabi sighed. "Might as well... It's too late now."

They all blinked.

"Dabi...?" Compress said oddly.

"What happened to your face?!" Silk sputtered, "I mean, uh, that sounded wrong..."

"Wait, he's hot...?" Medea said.

They all looked at her.

"What?" she said.

"Girl," Camie laughed, "Right on. That's what I thought too. I just didn't want to say it."

"Yugh, he's at least 8 years older than you..." Wally said.

"Uh...Wally, you're almost that much older than me..." Shine said.

"But they're in highschool," Wally said.

"Right," Shine said.

"What have you done to yourself?" Shigaraki sputtered, like it was a bad thing.

"That's...Dabi?" Hawks said to Mirko.

"You're asking me? I haven't seen him since he crossed over," she said.

"Dabi crossed over?" Hawks was totally lost now.

"Yeah, well, the make-over wasn't my idea." Dabi stared at the ground. "But here it is... You see why I can't be in the League anymore... Spinner, if you say one word, I'mma melt your face off."

Spinner was going to say something-- and clamped his mouth shut.

"Toga would lose her mind..." Compress muttered, "Well, not really, 'cause she already has..."

"Look, Dabi, putting aside the fact that you've completely ditched all of us," Shigaraki was mad, "you didn't have the decency to tell us to our faces? Just running off like that-- what kind of gratitude is that?"

Dabi shrugged. "Why would you really care?"

"Because we're already down two people, and this is just---rude..." Shigaraki couldn't think of anything less problematic to say. He'd had a whole speech prepared in his mind before, but after the events of today, he couldn't remember a word of it or muster the energy to be angry. Rude was all he could think of.

"Rude?" Mirko snorted, not helping.

"I'm so lost..." Hawks rubbed his head.

"But why...?" Compress said.

"I think I know," Silk said, eyeing Dabi, "You found something more important than revenge, hmm?"

"Something like that..." Dabi muttered.

Shoto looked away.

"Likstar didn't force me, by the way." Dabi looked at the ground. "I heard about that...and it was my choice, so, yeah, whatever. Don't take it out on anyone else."

"I still don't get it..." Compress said. "We had motives...goals...and you're just going to throw that all away...and for what? To be a good guy-- to be a fugitive?"

"I can't explain this either," Dabi said, "Some things you just know you're supposed to do, I guess...and look at me... Could there be a clearer sign someone else is running this show now?[😉] What am I supposed to do, huh? It is what it is."

"So...you're just okay with that?" Spinner said.

"I did a good job messing up my life," Dabi said, "Maybe it's not really a good idea for me to call the shots anymore."

Shine tilted her head. "Dabi's just learning the lingo here, but he's not wrong. While it's not quite that simple always, it's true that we mess up own lives... Someone else always had to put us back together. And...really, I'd think you'd all be happy for him if this is working out. But people so rarely are..."

"I know my friends weren't," Wally recalled, "My best buddy told me to my face he thought I was getting carried away. Guess I was...Spirited away." He winked at Shine.

"And my family thinks I'm nuts, except my closest ones," Shine said, "Being different is hard...but it's worth it."

"What are they talking about?" Hawks said.

"Try to keep up," Mirko said.

"I can't... No one tells me stuff."

"Because you're a spy, duh," Mirko said.

Hawks felt kind of hurt, but he thought he deserved it.

"What I don't understand," Shigaraki finally spoke again, "Is...well, I could understand Likstar, maybe. She's almost one of us."

Shine gave him a weird look at that.

"But these kids? Your enemies? You're just going to hang around them?"

"Well, I'm not thrilled about it, but I'm kind of stuck," Dabi said, "And...okay, maybe not all of them are as bad. These two have been training them for a while, you know. They're not as stuck up as they were at first."

"You're defending them?" Spinner said.

"I'm not sure how they're okay with this... You're a murderer..." Compress said, "They're heroes... This doesn't make any sense."

"No, it doesn't," Shoto said darkly.

Momo gripped her clothes nervously. "I suppose it is a little strange...but it doesn't feel the same. We just don't feel like Dabi is the same as he was then."

"3 weeks ago--" Spinner began, but Compress shushed him.

Momo continued "...And...it's like it wasn't him, in a way... I don't know. I don't know him that well, but I feel like even if I did, I'd think the same thing...and people should get a chance, shouldn't they? I mean, if no one can ever change, what's the point of all this? Oh, I'm rambling... Uh...sorry..."

They stared at her.

"Yeah, she actually is just that...that," Dabi said, "I thought it was an act too, but...yeah..."

"Oh, shove it," Bakugo said to him.

"I see someone is still the same..." Spinner muttered, "And didn't we kidnap that kid? And he's just okay with this?"

"Like I'm scared of Dabi, Lizard Brain," Bakugo said, "He couldn't even fight me then. Neither could you!"

Camie snickered.

"This is weird. Talking about this is weird," Compress said.

Shine laughed. "You guys are funny."

"Perhaps it's best if we just leave it alone," Silk said, "Dabi is going his way...and we go ours...unless we enact revenge...but I see enough bloodshed for one day. Also I feel that heroes will probably not allow us to."

"Good insight," Mirko said, cocking one ear.

"Yeah, we wouldn't," Wally said, crossing his arms, "How about we all just walk away?"

Silence.

"I guess there's nothing else to do," Shigaraki said, "We can't take all of them, not after that."

No one argued, not even Spinner.

"Are you going to be okay?" Shine asked, "The Originals are not done with us yet, I don't think. Though two failures in a row must not sit well with them. You should be very careful."

Medea shivered.

"Here, let me at least send you." Shine held up her sword. "They won't be able to follow that. I know a few places that are pretty empty. Wally and I stake them out to get away from the heroes."

"Whoa, really?" Camie laughed, "UA got you that stressed, sis?"

"Oh...ye-es..." Shine said with emphasis.

She opened a door.

The LOV didn't even argue it. They really just seemed too tired and possibly traumatized from what just happened.

After they left, the heroes had to help with clean up. Shine and Wally disappeared as usual.
