Part 13: Spies?
Momo called UA as soon as they were away from the villains, and the teachers told them to get to the nearest police station, which they did. But no one followed them. It seemed the villains either couldn't, or didn't have the motivation. While they waited for Aizawa to pick them up, Shine had Momo tell her the whole story.
"They couldn't have been there unless they wanted to attract attention," she reasoned. "But I doubt they knew you'd be around. That was just bad luck on your part."
Momo nodded. "But why were they acting so openly."
"Scare tactic: They're basically terrorists aren't they?" Wally said. "I'm still a little unclear on what they LOV actually does..."
"That's close enough," Momo said. Her hands were shaking. "I'm glad you guys showed up... I couldn't think, I just froze up...I'm pathetic."
"It's normal to not be sure what to do at a time like that," Shine said.
"Not for a hero," Momo said sadly. "I can't believe I did that... I thought I had grown, but faced with real villains, I still didn't know what to do."
Wally and Shine exchanged a look.
"I think you did though," Shine said gently. "You didn't want them to hurt anyone else. Until we showed up, you had no back up, there were 3 of them, and two at least are out of their minds, I don't know about that Dabi person. He had the look of a guy just on the edge of sanity and insanity. Given the situation, I agree with what you did, if that means anything, since I'm not a pro."
"I do too, if that helps," Wally gestured nonchalantly. "I'd do the same thing, if I didn't have the power to stop them. Stalling is what you've got to do sometime."
"I...?" Momo was surprised. "You really... think that?"
"Why would we lie?" Shine said. "Look, it's normal to second guess yourself after a scary experience like that, but I wouldn't say you panicked, myself."
"But both of you knew what to do," Momo said.
"Well, I'm really fast..." Wally said.
"And I literally made it up on the spot," Shine said. "High risk situations make my thinking really clear and focused, for whatever reason. But clearly yours too. Don't feel bad about it. Besides, that move at the end was great. The look on his face was priceless. Like "oh, I'm screwed now""
She laughed.
Wally chuckled too. "That is a fun look."
Momo began to feel a little bit better listening to their easy way of handling it... but also, it puzzled her. Wally, she understood, as he had powers, but Shine's were so unclear, why was she so used to these kind of situations if she wasn't a hero?
Momo's relief was not shared by the UA staff. They were furious. And they blamed Shine and Wally for getting lost and leaving Momo alone. Wally took responsibility for running them to the wrong station, and Shine apologized for their inexperience causing a problem like this...but when the staff continued to scold them anyway, she started to lose patience.
"You can't make it out like the whole thing was solely our fault, some of it was just bad timing."
"Miss Likstar," Nezu said. "I wish to be fair, but you still left a student alone outside campus. In a public place."
"Isn't it unfair to blame us for that? You didn't want us to go with her, she could've been all alone if we hadn't tagged along, and the same thing could have happened, only with no help." Wally said.
"Yeah, the pros sure weren't showing up on time," Shine said.
"You're deflecting the blame onto actual Pros?" Midnight said, annoyed. "Even if you persist in claiming it's not your fault, that's going a bit far."
"I'm not one to have unrealistic expectations," Shine waved it off. "But I can't say the same for all of you. If we're going to reach wildly for someone to blame, why not the people who didn't have the excuse of not being able to read street signs? It's really no one's fault in my opinion. And if you keep assigning blame, you'll only make the poor girl feel worse about it. She's blaming herself."
"Yeah, if we get in trouble, she'll feel bad," Wally said. "So, if you want to ground us or whatever, better not make it obvious to her."
"You want to use that as leverage?" Aizawa said.
"The better question here is why aren't you apologizing to us?" Shine said. "This is your messed up world, and that's the second time villains have almost stabbed me just for being around you and your students. Wally saved the day, and you haven't even thanked him. He doesn't owe that to you. Neither do I. We could have run and saved ourselves. I don't rescue people to be thanked, but to stand here and be reprimanded for it by alleged "heroes" is striking me as just a little backwards."
Silence.
"Thank you," All Might finally bowed to them. "It is true, our negligence is more to blame, and you did help our student. We owe you our gratitude for that."
"Don't mention it," Wally said jokingly...but no one laughed. Apparently, they didn't see the use of humor the way his buddies did.
Shine nodded. "It was a pleasure... can we go now? We had a long day."
"You may go," Nezu sighed. But once they did, he said: "Concerning."
"The attack?" Present Mic said.
"That too, but also, it's just a strange coincidence that they've encountered the LOV twice now, and the same people, for that matter. It's starting to look like a pattern. It could be construed as an accident, but, with their powers, it would be easy to orchestrate the whole thing. Miss Yaoyerozu being close to them may be putting her in danger."
"If they planned it, why stop in?" All Might asked.
"Simple: they look good, and then they earn our trust," Aizawa said. "We already suspect a traitor at UA... we don't need infiltrators. It's easy to see why they might have use to conveniently stage something like this, they didn't get hurt either time."
"They could just be really skilled," Midnight pointed out. "But I admit, it's convenient."
"But, still..." Present Mic said. "If they were in league with the league, what exactly are they providing them?"
"Easy, personal information on the students," Aizawa said. "We'd have played right into their hands. What do they seem expressly skilled at? It's all really too simple."
"So simple, that I am not sure we can believe it," Nezu said. "Such an obvious advantage to them, we would have to believe they'd expose themselves that easily. It'd be smarter not to be near the area at all if they didn't want to be associated with the League. It's true, they may not be clever enough to think of that...but, given Likstar's abilities she's shown so far, it's had to believe she wouldn't think of that. We would need more proof than we have."
"And what do we risk in the meantime?" Aizawa said.
They all paused, and thought about that.
"We can't just throw them out either, they'd just disappear," Snipe said.
"I think we have no choice but to let them go on this way, and not let them suspect we suspect them," Nezu said. "Then, if they make a mistake, we will be able to set a trap more effectively. We also need to learn their weaknesses. I assume Aizawa can use his quirk to stop theirs, but that may not be enough. We need more. Letting them interact withe the students, we are more likely to see a weakness surface."
"Are you saying we use the students as guinea pigs?" Snipe asked.
"That's not a delicate way of putting it," Nezu said. "but we have no choice at the moment. If they are villains, and we throw them out, they will go to the League themselves and we lose any chance of catching them. And if they join the league, our problems only increase from there. It's possible they are double agents, or considering being so, and that would be of great use to us."
It sounded bad, but, the pros were forced to agree.
* * *
The 1-A students heard about the incident from Momo, and were of course, freaked out. And some of them actually took the teacher's view of it. Not as harshly, but Tsuyu, Iida, and Todoroki all wondered at the "bad luck" of the DJs running into the same League members twice.
Shine and Wally didn't seem to think anything of it, Wally told Kirishima and Midoriyia that running into the same villains multiple times happened to him quite often at home. Which sounded terrifying to them, but he seemed to think it was nothing. His confidence wasn't helping the others feel trusting of him, he seemed to be taking it way too easily.
"You realize, that Yaoyerozu could have been badly hurt by those villains." Iida said. "Aren't you at all concerned?"
"I was at the time, but why are you harping on it?" Shine said, not very nicely, it must be admitted. She was getting real tired of this, first the staff, now the students.
"Excuse me?" Iida was shocked.
"Uh, what Shine means is, you're not exactly saying anything helpful," Wally tried. "I mean, we know what could have happened, but it didn't."
"If it comes to that, I'd much rather know more about the LOV so we can avoid this in the future," Shine said. "Or at least be more prepared. I had to rely on my read on them to distract them, because I don't know their powers or goals that much. Blue fire is the only one I am sure of. And what is with the guy who talks to himself constantly? Why is he even a villain? I'm amazed he can function."
"Well...yes..." Todoroki admitted. "but the blue fire one, Dabi, is a serious problem. He kidnapped Bakugo--" he stopped, all the students present turned to give him angry or surprised looks.
Bakugo himself was not around, or he probably would have blown him up.
Shine looked up, suddenly all ears. "Did you say kidnapped? When did this happen?"
Silence.
"I misspoke." Shoto said.
"That's one heck of a misspeak," Wally said, not buying it for a second.
"It's a secret?" Shine said.
More silence.
"It's not a secret exactly," Uraraka finally said. "I mean, it's been all over the news, I guess they would probably find out eventually, guys."
"True," Iida said, shoving up his glasses. "Well, to be brief, the League did kidnap Bakugo for a few days, but he was found and returned safely, as you can see. That is why we all live at campus. For our protection."
"From kidnapping?" Wally said. "I mean, it's sort of how my base is."
Shine frowned. "If you all live at the same place--" she stopped, seeming to think better of what she was about to say. "Anyway, I'm surprised to hear that. Bakugo doesn't act likes someone who's recently been kidnapped. How long ago was it?"
"Um... two months ago." Kirishima said. "It was... pretty bad. But, hey, we got through it. Can't let something like that slow you down when you're a hero, and nothing like that has happened since."
Midoryia carefully looked away from everyone else.
Shine frowned. "Forgive me, but that makes it almost sound like something like that happened before... did it?"
"No one else got kidnapped," Kaminari waved his hands, smiling nervously.
Shine's eyes narrowed. "I see."
An uncomfortable pause while half of the class wondered if Shine could see clearly that they were holding back, and the other half knew that she could. Momo wasn't sure what to say. She had told Shine about the remedial training, but the kidnapping seemed too personal to share, and the school didn't like them talking about it. But, if they were going to ask anyway, was it better to just tell them. But since no one else spoke, she lacked the resolve to do so.
"Maybe," Todoroki spoke finally, "you should try to stay out of our business. This hero stuff really doesn't concern you. It's also not safe for you to involve yourselves."
Harsh, but a fair point, the class thought.
Shine and Wally exchanged one of their knowing looks.
"Well, safety is kind of overrated," Wally shrugged.
"Clearly, being here is not that safe for us," Shine agreed. "But, if you aren't going to tell us more, then there's nothing we can do about that, is there? You must want to rest now. I want to also."
She got up and headed upstairs. Wally shrugged and followed.
The class looked at each other.
"Does it seem like they could be working with the League?" Sero asked, rubbing his head.
"A little," Jiro said.
"What? How can you say that?" Momo said. "They helped me."
"That's just it, they knew where to find you, at just the right moment," Todoroki said. "That's suspicious."
Nevermind that he had once pulled the same thing off to save Deku and Iida.
"They're fast enough to find me," Momo said, "besides, Mr. West ran by first, if he knew where I was, why would he do that?"
"He could easily run by accidentally," Iida mused. "It does look strange. I'd hate to think they are spies, but the timing is just too...."
"Convenient," Tsuyu finished.
"Now, wait, guys," Kirishima said. "This is a pretty big leap isn't it? Shouldn't we think about this? I mean, they've never acted like villains in training."
"Why would they? That would be stupid if they were spies," Jiro said.
"I admit, the circumstances look shady," Tokayami said soberly. "But we have no definitive proof. The teachers seem to trust them."
"That's true..." Iida said.
Not that the teachers hadn't been caught off guard before... no one said that out loud however.
"I can't believe you suspect them," Momo said, truly astonished. "They've been nothing but nice to us."
"I don't know if I'd call that nice," Todoroki said. "They sure seemed defensive about it."
"That's because the teachers already talked to them, and it probably upset them to hear it again," Momo protested. "You can't all really think they could be villains."
"It would be an ingenious cover, if they were," Shoji said. "We should watch them carefully."
Momo was bothered. But... what could she say? She thought that the way Shine and Wally had spoken to her about the incident indicated their kindness and she couldn't believe they would be villains, but she was sure the others would only say that was part of the act. She didn't think her own "gut feeling" would be enough to convince them.
The other students noticed her downcast face.
Jiro sighted, "Look, Momo, no one's saying for sure. It's just that we have to consider every possibility here. There's been a lot of villain attacks, and they have tried infiltrating before. Todoroki, wasn't there someone at remedial who got targeted by the League too?"
"Yes, and that was actually a lot like this," Todoroki said soberly. "They replaced her, and no one could tell, it went on for days. Which means..." he didn't finish, but the others started.
"Means what?" Kaminari finally said blankly.
"It means that, someone could have been replaced," Tsuyu said.
Everyone looked at Momo. Momo blinked. "What? I'm--" She held out her hand and formed an eraser. "Me."
"I didn't really think they would replace you," Jiro said. "I mean, we'd definitely notice if you stopped being so observant and stuff in class. There's better people to replace than you if they want to be undetected."
Momo wasn't sure if that was a compliment or not.
"What about the other two?" Todoroki said grimly.
"Mr. West used his power" Momo said staunchly.
"Did Likstar?" Iida asked.
Momo hesitated. "No..." and she couldn't exactly say that Shine didn't have a power like that... how was she supposed to defend her then?
"And she's slower, so if someone was going to be caught," Todoroki reasoned, "it'd be her. Maybe it was a set up, and you were bait. After all, The LOV already met Likstar, they know she's staying there. It would make perfect sense."
"How do we prove it?" Kirishima asked.
"Ask her to portal, and if she can't, then she's a fake," Kaminari said, snapping his fingers.
The others agreed on that, and Momo couldn't exactly stop them, they headed upstairs and banged on Shine's door. She answered, already ready for bed.
"What?" She said. "What's wrong?"
"Can you make a portal?" Mina blurted.
Shines stared at them. "For what purpose?"
"You know, we just want to see it," Kaminari said, some of the others face palmed.
"I'm sorry, but portals are sacred tools, and they can't be opened just to show off," Shine said seriously. "It's an abuse of power, they must be opened to go through. And it's a waste of energy on my part. If one of you doesn't need to rush to the office, I see no reason to use one. Is someone sick?"
"No," Tsuyu said. "We just need to check something. Can you make a portal to the gate and back?"
"What do you want to check?" Shine asked.
"Is that really important?" Jiro said sullenly.
Shine looked at them all for a long moment. "No," she said. "Sorry. Good night." She shut the door.
The class looked at each other.
"Clearly she could have," Momo said. "She was willing to if it was an emergency, that didn't sound like she was being defensive."
"Momo, why are you trying to hard to justify it?" Jiro asked her. "It's not like we blame you or anything, if they turn out to be spies--"
The door opened again.
"You know," Shine said, looking at them thinly, "these doors aren't all that thick. I can hear you." She looked angry. "If you're going to stand around discussing my legitimacy, can you please do it in a different hallway?"
They were all mortified.
"Miss Likstar, please understand, it's not personal," Iida said. "It's just that the LOV has people who can make copies of themselves, and pose as other people--"
Shine's expression cleared.
"Oh, is that all?" She smiled. "And you want to know if I am a fake? Well, you could've just said so." She pulled her sword out of thin air. "This proof enough? Can they mimic powers?"
"Uh... Toga can't that we know of," Deku said. "Cause she didn't use Uraraka's quirk when she looked like here."
"But Twice can," Kirishima recalled. "Because his double used flames. But not for very long."
"Well," Shine said. "That's a little hard to prove then. But ask me something only I would know."
Momo looked up. "When you came into my room to chat, what did you have with you?" She said quickly, earning her some strange looks.
"Chocolate." Shine replied without hesitation.
Momo nodded. "That's true. See, it is her."
The class felt a little silly. "Our apologies, Miss Likstar," Iida bowed.
"Oh, no need," Shine waved it off. "I completely understand, in fact, I'd do the same if I were you, I just didn't know about all that. Did you test Momo? I'd answer to it she's real though, since I saw her use her quirk at the time and I didn't take my eyes off her after that."
"I proved it," Momo said.
(Even if Twice could copy Momo's quirk, nobody believed he had the intelligence to use it, so there was no question about her being real.)
"That's really terrifying" Shine commented. "Knowing that, I will probably be second guessing anyone I meet, I did wonder how they looked like Power Loader, now I get it.... the blood! That's why they wanted it!"
Not bad, she was getting the hang of quirk logic.
"Yeah, it's a little scary, but we don't worry about it too much," Kaminari rubbed his head.
The obvious reason being, once you started obsessing over it, there would be literally no end to it.
"I think I could tell though..." Shine mused to herself, "not sure, actually. Haven't been tested on it. Anyway, is that all?"
"Uh, yes..." they said.
Shine nodded and shut her door.
One might think that would have been enough to put the students at ease, but the truth was, plenty of them still harbored doubts. If Shine was real, it didn't prove that she and Wally were not spies. Things had still lined up very conveniently. But how to catch them if they were? No one knew.
Momo still refused to believe it, but no one trusted her opinion on the matter enough to drop it. When the DJs were not around, they kept bringing it up, and discussing if they would find a way to prove once and for all...but since they didn't know what the spies might want, it was hard to set a trap.
Momo grew increasingly upset with the talk and tried to stop it. She was also afraid the two strangers would hear it.
The other students told her that she was being too nice to them, and should be willing to suspect them, for the safety of the school.
"You mean well," the girls told her, "but you're too nice, Momo. You never want to think anyone could be secretly bad."
Momo wasn't sure she really though in general that people might not be spies, what with all the villain attacks, but she did in this case.
She got so upset over it that, she just sat outside the dorms alone finally, a few days after the incident, just to get away from everybody.
Todoroki happened upon her doing this on the way back from remedial. He wasn't great at talking to people, but just ignoring someone who was obviously upset didn't sit right, so he stopped.
"Are you okay?"
"Fine," Momo lied, not noticing it was a lie.
"Are you sick?" Todoroki asked.
"No," Momo shook her head.
Pause.
"Is it because of the incident?" Todoroki guessed.
Momo sighed. "I'm afraid you won't really understand, since you share the opinion that we can't trust them... but it's getting to be really difficult to even talk to anyone without thinking that they are thinking about it, and thinking that I am just being naive."
"Did anyone say that?" Todoroki was a little surprised.
"No, but that's what they mean" Momo said, and she was sure this was not an exaggeration. "I'm going to be mortified if they notice too."
"The class you mean?"
"No, the DJs," Momo cried, "after trying to help, they get this in return? It's humiliating! I feel sorry for them. I am sure they were just trying to help."
"Maybe your'e sure, but, you can't expect everyone else to have that kind of confidence in them," Todoroki said this far more nicely than her normally would have, but he didn't want to make Momo cry.
Not that it was going to work, she was already on the verge of it.
"I know," Momo said, shaking her head. "The truth is, I understand where everyone is coming from. If I hadn't been there, I might even agree with them. But I was there, and I can't believe that wasn't genuine."
"There's another possibility," Todoroki sat down on the wall and look contemplative.
"That they aren't spies, but they still may not be telling us the full story of who they are." He saw Momo give a small start.
"They haven't said all that much about why they are here, either," Todoroki said. "And when you think about it, it's pretty strange to just show up at a school, and not have a reason to be there beyond 'helping,' what does that even mean? Who does something like that? At the very least, they're very odd. But, if they have a secret motive, that would make sense."
"I suppose" Momo said. "But, if it was a bad motive, why put so much effort into being kind?"
"I don't know that they are that kind, Likstar has been provoking Bakugo a lot, and I don't know if the way she talks to some people is exactly right," Todoroki said. He meant Mr. Aizawa, and possibly Iida too. "I can't read Mr. West very well."
"But, they must be stressed, not knowing anything about here," Momo said. "And having people accuse them, that could explain all that."
"It could explain it," Todoroki admitted, "but they should expect to be treated that way if they refuse to tell us the truth. I don't think it's a good excuse. Why make more trouble for themselves, unless their goal is to cause trouble. Objectively, something about it doesn't seem right to me."
Momo trusted his judgment a lot, and began to consider if he had a point.
Finally she said "May I ask, would you say you think what they do isn't right? Or that you don't think it makes sense? I mean, which is it?"
Todoroki though hard. "It doesn't make sense... whether it's right or wrong, it's always just a little hard to tell. They could just be opinionated, and genuinely confused about things. If they really are from another world, that would be reasonable. But if they are lying then the behavior looks really off. If they aren't lying, I still would not understand why they start trouble the way they do. They seem to have little regard for the Pro Heroes warnings to them. Or ours. And, the look Miss Likstar gave us the other day when we refused to tell her more about the LOV's activity, I didn't like it. It was like she was sizing us up."
"I... could say that might be because she thought you didn't trust her..." Momo said carefully.
"I wouldn't blame her for that," Todoroki said, "but it doesn't make me trust her more just because she knows I don't."
Momo thought for a bit. "I think you are right about some of it Todoroki," She admitted, which surprised him a little to hear. "I have those questions also... I think the difference between us right now is, I feel that they are going to tell us in time. But I can't prove it. I will respect your opinion about it, because of that... but I really hope that you don't try to make them feel bad until you get actual proof, what if it turns out they really are good people? It would be dreadful to have any regrets about it then."
"That is a fair point," Todoroki conceded. "I'm not going to fight them or anything, but I won't be treating them like they've earned my trust either...you should be careful."
"I think I'll be fine," Momo said. "I just don't know about the rest of the class. I can't keep this up."
"I don't understand people very well," Todoroki admitted. "But I would probably just ignore it if it were me, you can't stop them from being suspicious, and you might just anger them if they think you are not listening to their concerns. Maybe staying out of it is the best thing to do."
Momo hesitated. "Really? Can I do that? It seems irresponsible.
"It's not your job to make sure they all get along," Todoroki shrugged, not thinking he was saying anything profound.
Momo blinked. "Hmm..." she wasn't sure how to feel about that.
Todoroki decided to go inside then, and she had to also to get ready for class, so the conversation ended for the time being.
