Part 1: Odd arrival
"That test was brutal," Kirishima commented to Kaminari.
"Yeah, how d'you think you did?"
"No clue. Hoping for the best though..." Kirishima glanced ahead. "Hey, who is that?"
Kaminari looked up and finally saw a couple of people too old to be students standing by the school's front entrance. Both looked confused. One girl, one guy. The guy was eyeing the security fence with a concerned frown. The girl zeroed in on the two boys and seemed to be looking them over.
"They aren't teachers. Press maybe?" Kaminari suggested, as unlikely as that was.
"Let's go find out," Kirishima said in a suspicious voice. He strode purposefully down the walkway toward them. The man got a little in front of the woman and her hand went to her shoulder, tugging her hair.
Once they got close, Kaminari could note she was very pretty, but looked completely foreign. European, maybe? American? Not one bit Japanese. Their clothes were a little off too, though modern. The man looked like he worked out a lot. He had a build like a Pro, but had a face more like a delivery guy-- friendly, also guarded. Kirishima got right to the point.
"Who are you? Do you have passes?"
"Passes?" the man repeated, with a caught smile.
"This is private property, dude," Kaminari said.
"It is?" The man winced. "Oops. Maybe made a minor miscalculation there, Sunshine."
The woman sighed. "I'm sure this was right. How could it not be? Besides, I told you it wasn't--"
"--Your calculations. Yeah, I know." The man looked perturbed. "Well, now, sorry kids. We're uh...new."
Kaminari and Kirishima exchanged a look that said, "Not buying it."
"How dumb do they think we are?" Kaminari glanced behind them and noted Mr. Aizawa coming their way. Time to stall.
"New, huh?" he said with a laid back grin, "So, you have no idea this is UA?"
"UA?" the woman replied, with a pretty convincing befuddled expression.
"Yeah, Plus Ultra!" Kirishima said, "Highest ranking hero course in Japan."
"Japan?" the man said.
"Hero Course?" the woman repeated. They exchanged a look.
The man flexed his fingers. "Oh, yeah, this'll be fun--"
A scarf line tied around his limbs. The woman glanced around warily.
"I'd advise you not to move." Aizawa came into view from behind a tree. "This is pretty much unbreakable, and I'd prefer to have as little trouble as possible taking you in."
The woman's hand froze over her shoulder, and she got a defiant gleam in her eye. "Taking us in to where?" she asked.
"How does jail sound?" Aizawa replied dryly.
"Jail?! For what?" the man sputtered, twitching.
"Trespassing on private property," Aizawa said coolly.
"Well, that's not going to work for me," the woman frowned. "Jail would be really bad. Look, it was an honest mistake. Can't we just clear out and call it even?"
"Maybe a year ago." Aizawa was relentless. "But now I just can't afford the risk. If it was really a mistake, you should have nothing to fear as long as you don't resist."
"Do we want to resist?" the man asked like he was asking her if she wanted to stop for coffee.
Aizawa frowned.
The woman narrowed her gaze. "What choice do we have?"
Suddenly Aizawa found himself tangled in his own scarf at a faster speed than he could blink, and the man was free, dusting his hands off.
Kirishima struck at him with a yell, and his hand was blocked by...a sword? The woman was holding it out, looking intent.
"Please, just let go," she said.
"Not a chance!" Kirishima tried again.
She blocked once more, but his other hand came at her--the man shoved him aside, not hurting him at all.
"Dude! Not cool," he said.
"Let's go." The woman grabbed his arm.
The man plucked her off her feet and dashed away in the blink of an eye.
"Holy crap! He's fast!" Kaminari sputtered, "Faster than Iida!"
"We need to alert the other teachers. Go!" Aizawa barked at him, "Kirishima, untie me."
"Yes, sir!" They both did as he said.
* * *
"I don't know. I just think we should--" Ochaco Uraraka broke off as Kaminari came speeding past them toward the principal's office.
"Some freaks invaded the school!" he said, seeing them, "Have to find the teachers."
"Freaks?" Momo Yaoyurozu repeated, frowning.
"Ribbit?" Tsuyu Asui muttered.
"Yeah, tall guy and a girl. Guy's super fast. Girl has a sword! Not good!" Kaminari was already up the hall.
"Oh no," Tohru Hagakure moaned in a panicky voice.
"We'll find the teachers. Try the lounge," Tsu said.
They nodded and sped in that direction.
* * *
They found All Might and Midnight and Vlad King all in the teacher's lounge, sipping tea. When the girls blurted out about intruders, they all jumped up and ran to assist Aizawa.
Kaminari, Principle Nezu, and Present Mic ran into the girls and All Might on the way back to the main hall. "No security cameras revealed any breach of our defenses," the principle said in his peppy way.
"Then how did they get in?" All Might asked.
"Yo, maybe we should ask them," Present Mic boomed.
Uraraka turned and gasped. Two people were standing just inside the doors, but no weapon in sight, they looked ordinary to her.
"Yeah," the guy said, shrugging, "Turns out this place is harder to leave than we thought."
Noticing the commotion, more students were filtering into the hall from various rooms, mostly 1-A, since they'd just got out.
Momo was first to step into full view of the strangers, she felt she should as the class vice president, be ready to meet the threat. Bravely, she faced them.
She expected the usual cocky, threatening demeanor of villains, (or media), who broke into the school. But instead, she saw only confusion in their eyes. Then the man smiled in a friendly way at her when he caught her staring, and nodded like she was a kid crossing the street by him.
The woman wasn't that nonchalant but she gazed at Momo with a steady, unafraid expression and smiled lightly like she was trying to be reassuring.
It was so unlike anything Momo expected that she forgot all about demanding to know who they were, or any other typical response.
But she didn't have any need to take action anyway, because someone else did:
The principal stepped forward. "You must be the intruders."
The woman screamed and jumped back.
"Whoa," the man seemed more calm. "You a guinea pig?"
"I'm not sure," Nezu said with classic cheeriness. "Are you a villain?"
"Oh, heck no!" the woman sputtered, recovering quickly, "Is that what you guys thought? Okay, now it makes sense."
The man held up his hands. "We're not bad guys, we came in here to see if we could sort this out."
"First you run--" no one had noticed Aizawa slip in behind them, but the woman now jumped forward-- "now you decide to act rationally?"
"Um...well, we figured out we couldn't leave," The woman said, "Your fences are all solid. I can't...find a way out. So I guess...yes?"
"Hmm," Nezu frowned, intrigued.
The students exchanged some puzzled looks.
"So who are you?" the principal asked amiably. Perhaps his overall cuteness softened them. The woman relaxed a little.
"I'm Shine. Shine Likstar."
"And I'm Wally West," the man waved.
"Wally," Iida muttered to Midoriya, "Sounds American."
"Their accents aren't foreign," Aoyama murmured, intrigued.
"Why are you here?" Todoroki asked, in an intimidatingly calm voice.
The woman, Likstar, looked at him appraisingly. He felt a little weird, like she was looking right through him, it made him draw back a little where he wouldn't normally have hesitated.
"Well, I assume to help," she said, "but I'm not really sure. Where is this? You said Japan, right?"
No one else had noticed Kirishima behind Aizawa. He looked surprised.
"And this is a high school for superheroes?" Likstar continued uncertainly.
"Most people just call us heroes," All Might said in a voice that was neither suspicious nor trusting.
"But you have...powers?" West surmised.
"If you mean quirks, then yes," Aizawa said flatly, "Are you seriously pretending this is somehow unknown to you?"
"So, it's common knowledge?" Likstar said, without any irony whatsoever.
The teachers and students respectively exchanged troubled glances.
"I don't like this," West muttered. "It'd be nice to know, you know."
Likstar nodded mutely.
"What's your game?" All Might asked.
Likstar looked askance. "No game," in a small voice. Suddenly she looked like she needed a hug or something, Uraraka thought. Her eyes got big, and she was biting her lip like she wanted to have a meltdown.
"So, who the h--- are these losers?!" Bakugo yelled, making some of the class and teachers wince. They thought he never could handle things the right way.
Bakugo on the other hand thought everyone else was being naive. He couldn't put his finger on why, but he immediately got a feeling when those two had walked in. He could usually sense how strong someone was just by being around them...and while he didn't see any signs of a powerful quirk...he knew the aura of people who know they are powerful, and these two were radiating it.
Despite that, his rudeness still made its usual impression: West shot him a stunned look like he was trying to figure out why a teenager was yelling at him. Likstar just looked puzzled in general and paid him no mind whatsoever.
"Perhaps this was simply a mistake," Nezu said congenially. "Would you mind stepping into my office? We'll see if we can sort this out."
"Are you sure that's wise?" All Might hissed.
"They don't have the look of villains," Nezu replied in a low voice, "It may be they are innocent. We should not rush to conclusions. Clearly, they can evade capture if they wish. A huge fight is not desirable to any of us. Let us try to settle things peaceably."
"Right," All Might nodded.
All the teachers were gathering around them now.
West took Likstar's hand and gave her a questioning look. She nodded at him.
Bakugo's frown deepened, was he the only one seeing that clearly was a decision they just made to comply? Not one they were cowed into doing? That wasn't making anyone else suspicious?
No one else seemed to notice. West then spoke calmly:
"Okay," he said, "We'll try to sort it out, but don't go attacking us again, all right?"
"I was within my ri--" Aizawa began.
"So long as you don't give us a reason, I think we can comply," Nezu interrupted smoothly.
He nodded to all the teachers. They all followed him and the two strangers to his office.
"Stay put," Aizawa warned the students in a tone that left no room for argument.
"Gee, what do you think Principal Nezu will do to 'em?" Kirishima wondered.
"It'll be hard to arrest them, with the one being so fast," Iida observed, "but they seem reasonable. Unless this is a trick."
It could be, everyone thought.
Momo put her finger to her lip thoughtfully though. Why just come in like that? Without using their chance to explore UA while the staff searched for them? It would be a strange trick to just walk into their arms like this, if it was true. What could they intend to do? And how dangerous would they be if they thought they could pull it off.
* * *
"May I ask you to hand over your weapon?" Nezu requested amiably, "For safety reasons."
"No," Likstar replied, a little tense. "I both cannot and will not hand it over. I would be foolish to do so when I know nothing about you."
"That's not a very convincing story," Midnight remarked.
Likstar turned and gave her a startled look when she saw her hero costume. West looked--reddened--and looked at his feet.
"You're really pretending to not know who we are?" Snipe said incredulously.
"Well, in Eraser's case, maybe that's true," Present Mic quipped, earning him glares.
"I admit, I don't see how it's possible you've not heard of us Pros," Nezu admitted, "Unless you simply don't recognize All Might..."
All Might frowned, but the two looked as clueless as ever.
"Who's All Might?" West asked.
Aizawa leaned on the wall moodily. "D--- good bluff," he observed, "I'm starting to believe they're as ignorant as they claim. If this was an attempt at crime, the man could've easily gotten away by now. Conversely, if they wanted to attack UA, why aren't they doing it?"
Knowing he'd never voice this unless he was pretty sure he was right, the other teachers shrugged uncertainly.
Likstar met their gaze while West seemed uncomfortable with the scrutiny. "So does that mean we're good?"
"Not exactly," Aizawa said flatly, "There's still the problem of why you're either lying or completely ignorant of common knowledge."
"Yeah, like you've been under a rock," Ectoplasm said.
Likstar tugged her hair impatiently. "This is getting old. What is it we're supposed to know about?"
Nezu studied them. "You know nothing of our school-- that is your claim? Or who we are? Or that you were breaking the law in setting foot on school property without permission?"
"Uh..." West faltered.
"Yes," Likstar said distinctively, "But that's now been made clear to us at least three times by various members of whatever board this is--the directors, I assume? So, if you believe us, then can we get an explanation? At least tell us why we're in so much trouble for trespassing. Usually if we were just ignorant, we'd get let off with a warning or a restraining order. Not arrested."
"Maybe, but only if we believed you," Aizawa scowled, "I fail to see how the 6 1/2 meter [about 20 ft] tall wall did not clue you in about the private property."
"Oh..." Likstar looked uncomfortable. "Well...we sort of skipped the wall altogether."
"Skipped?" All Might repeated, raising an eyebrow.
"Should we, you know...?" West asked.
"Well, if they are supers, they'd get it, right?" Likstar mused, tapping her chin.
"The only way you could have done that is if you warped or tunneled in here." Aizawa narrowed his eyes.
All the teachers leaned forward, tensed, looking warlike.
Touchy subject seemed to flash across both of the strangers' minds.
"Warped?" West repeated, "Yeah, I guess some might call it that. I don't really like that term. Warping isn't really a good thing."
"It's not warping," Likstar said, in a well-informed/know-it-all voice. "Warping contorts time and space in an unhealthy way, plus it's usually the result of an anomaly. What we do is simply a short cut, a folding up of time and space, but time springs back, leaving us un-aged and the time line intact. A warp could have serious repercussions. It could explain the gaps between your parallel--" She paused, and then whispered something to her partner.
"Oh, gotcha," he winked, "Okay, so the lady's right-- not warping. Tessering. Big difference."
None of the teachers were surprised at the quirk, but the explanation of it did baffle them. Warping was a mystery even to people who could do it, often as not. Let alone understanding any nuance between kinds.
"That satisfies the wall problem," Nezu said amiably, never one to be disturbed by anything, "but creates another. Warping-- or tessering, if you prefer-- takes specific knowledge of a place and time, yet you claim not to recognize this spot."
"Well, easy enough." Likstar gestured vaguely around. "We didn't open the tesseract. Someone else did who knew the location. He sent us here, but I assure you, we weren't told about the place."
"So you were forced," Aizawa surmised.
Alarmed looks crossed the teachers' faces. Likstar didn't fail to notice it.
"Oh, no!" West cried, "Not forced. It's an assignment, is all."
"Uh huh," Aizawa said skeptically.
"Don't believe us, then." Likstar crossed her arms. "I can't blame you, but why would we lie about that? What do we stand to gain by the story? If sympathy was our goal, we could have let you believe we were forced."
Her defensive tone didn't reassure them.
"If you were sent, does it mean you're Pros? From another country, maybe?" All Might asked, "Just unknowing." Trying to be fair.
"Well, yes, we're from another country," Likstar allowed, "But Pros at what?"
Present Mic slapped his forehead. "Pro heroes, ya dig?!" he boomed exasperatedly.
"O-oh," West said. "Well, I'd like to think of myself as a pro, yes."
"Great. Where's your license?" Aizawa said in a gotcha voice.
"My what now?" West asked.
"Wally, I think professional means something else here," Likstar said. "Like a Huntsman, I'm guessing. A job."
"Oh...yeesh." He winced. "Sounds terrible."
Some insulted looks met that comment.
"Now, everyone, keep in mind they may not understand what they're talking about yet," Nezu said calmly, "May I ask, where did you wa--tesser, here, from?"
"Had to be Greenland," Snipe muttered to Power Loader, "Only place where there's almost zero heroes or crime."
The two were looking very reluctant.
"Direct approach worked last time..." West muttered.
Aizawa frowned.
"You have to understand, we just met, and this information requires a significant amount of trust," Likstar explained, in a kind but guarded voice.
After a moment of deliberating though, and exchanging looks with West, she nodded slowly. "So, the answer is kind of crazy sounding," she said, "but we...came...from another world."
After the initial stunned silence and low whistle from Mic, the teachers began all talking at once.
"What a wild claim!"
"But why make it if it wasn't true?"
"It's preposterous!"
"Guess it'd explain their cluelessness though."
"A little too conveniently."
"Other worlds...exist?" That was All Might.
"O-kay, mixed reaction, but overall you guys seem pretty calm," West said, looking relieved.
This irritated the heroes.
"That claim is outlandish," Aizawa said, "Even if we believed in different worlds, to cross between them would be--"
"Impossible?" Likstar said, "There's a talking Polar Bear in this room. In my home that would be pretty darn near impossible-- but not completely. So why write us off so quickly?"
"She makes a strangely put point." All Might rubbed his chin. "One hundred years ago, all of us would have been considered impossible. Maybe we should hear them out."
"I agree." Nezu sat down. "Please, begin at the beginning."
