The Castle
It was Friday evening when Detective Stone received the letter from Lord Addington, requesting his help. Lord and Lady Addington were the current owners of Mystery Castle. Detective Stone always thought Mystery was an odd name for a castle. The castle was rumored to be haunted. The letter said:
Dear sir, I hope this letter finds you in good health,
I have observed several strange events in my castle. I saw a table floating around the corridor and I often here howling in the night. I would like you to investigate the castle grounds. If you could arrive on Saturday morning at the eighth hour that would be ideal.
Sincerely,
Lord A. Addington
Detective Stone closed the letter and started placing his things in his briefcase marked S. Stone
The next morning, he woke up at the sixth hour and left slightly before the eighth. He arrived at Mystery Castle on time. Lord Addington's butler was waiting for him at the gates.
"Greetings, Detective Stone. This way," the butler, whose name is Alastair, told him.
Alastair led him to the entrance of the castle and eventually to the great hall.
"Do you know what you wish to investigate first?" Lord Addington asked the detective.
"I think I would like to see the table that was floating about," Detective Stone answered
"Of course. It is in the dining hall."
"Where was it floating?"
Lady Addington, who respectfully hadn't spoken until now, answered him:
"I left the great hall and saw it floating straight out of the dining hall towards me. I moved out of the way before it could hit me. It crashed into the wall yet was not even scratched later," she said.
"Interesting."
The detective then proceeded to examining the table in search of any means of floatation. He checked for ropes and strings. Surprisingly, the table was completely normal.
"It seems to be just like any other table," he told Lord Addington.
"But it was floating! I suspect sorcery!" Lord Addington exclaimed.
"You may be right. I see no other way for it to float," the detective replied.
"Will you need to examine the table more?" asked Lady Addington.
"I doubt it. What about the howling? Any idea as to where it comes from?"
"The only logical explanation would be that it was a wolf," Lord Addington said.
"Or it could have been the wind," suggested Lady Addington.
"Both of these hypotheses make sense," Detective Stone told them. "I'll have to investigate more."
