Chapter 2: Sticky Situation

We were in the Moon Pool, trying to figure out our next move.

"What's the plan?" I ask

"Plan for what?" Mimmi adds

"To change Evie back," Sirena says, "we can't leave her a mermaid."

"She's not a mermaid," Ondina says, "and she never will be."

"She still has a tail." I argue.

"That's not our problem."

"We need to stay focused on Zac," Mimmi says, changing the subject.

"Can't you see how hard this is for Evie?" Sirena asks, "Maybe you haven't noticed, but land people are around water all the time. They drink it, they wash their clothes in it,"

"Well, that's just silly." Ondina interrupts.

"Wherever Evie goes, she's at risk now."

"Every time she touches water, she'll transform." I add

"It's hard enough for Zac to keep his tail a secret. Do you want to give Evie the same problem?" Sirena asks us.

"Sirena's right. We should help her." Mimmi says.

"If you couldn't remove Zac's tail on a full moon, how are we supposed to turn Evie back?" Ondina asks "Anyway, like Mimmi said, Zac is the focus. Evie's low priority."

"Do you think she'd be a high priority if the Mermaid Council found out what you've done?" I ask.

"There is no need for the Council to know."

"You were the ones who changed her, now you have to change her back." Sirena says.

"Actually, there is something that we could try." Mimmi says.

"What is it?" I ask

"You and Sirena head back to the Grotto, We'll meet you there after we talk to Evie, then I'll show you."

Sirena and I gave each other a look before leaving the Moon Pool and torpedoing back to the Grotto.

"You think she has a plan?" I ask

Sirena nods, "Maybe they're talking to Evie so they can bring her here."

"And then we try and change her back. Where would she be?"

"Probably at the cafe. She has a shop there."

"Maybe I should go too, make sure they stay out of trouble."

"Be careful."

"Will do." With that, I dived back into the sea entrance and torpedoed to the cafe. After I got out and dried off, I found Ondina sitting at a table, so I joined her. "Hey," I say.

"What are you doing here?" she asks, "Did Sirena send you?"

"I sent myself. How are things going with Evie?"

"Mimmi's inside, talking to her."

"Hope it goes well."

Some time later, the cute guy from yesterday came over to us. "Hey, it's the coconut smoothie girls, what can I get you?"

"We don't want anything," Ondina says.

"We have some terrific specials, homemade right here."

"No,"

"Do you have any idea how inadequate this makes me feel as a waiter?"

"Not our problem."

"Not your problem," I say. "Sorry about her."

"It's alright," he says, "You know, I was wrong about you two, you're watermelon juice girls. I'll be right back."

"What was that about?" Ondina asks as he walks away.

"I could ask you the same," I respond, "besides, he's cute."

"He's a land boy."

"So?"

"So, you and him, not gonna happen. We're not gonna be here that long anyway."

"We'll see."

A few minutes went by before Zac showed up. "What are you two doing here?"

"Helping your girlfriend." Ondina responds just as Mimmi walks out.

"Manoa, what are you doing here? I thought you'd still be with Sirena." she says.

"She's crushing on land boys." Ondina answers for me, rolling her eyes.

"Really, Ondina?" I ask.

"We can go now," Mimmi says.

"And not a moment too soon." Ondina adds as they start to leave.

"Wait, what were you doing in there?" Zac asks them.

"I'm starting to think you girls don't like me," the other guy says. When did he get back?

"I wouldn't say that." I say, "The girls are just-"

"Manoa!" Ondina calls.

"Sorry, I have to go," I say before running after them.

~Back at the Grotto~

"You're back," Sirena says, "How'd it go with Evie?"

"We're working on it." Mimmi says

"Working on what?"

"Mimmi can do things you can't even imagine." Ondina says, as they get a few things and set them on the table.

"So why couldn't you make Zac lose his tail?" I ask

"The boy's connection to Mako must be protecting him."

"And Evie's change is recent," Mimmi adds, "She hasn't had enough time to build up her defenses."

"How's this?" Ondina asks, setting a large cylindrical vase on the table.

"Perfect." Mimmi says, and she started adding and mixing things into a bowl until it was a pink goop.

"How is that stuff gonna turn Evie back?" Sirena asks.

"Watch and learn," Mimmi says, getting an apple and setting it on the table. "Imagine this apple is Evie." She then scooped some of the goop and put it in the vase, now filled with water. She then started to use her powers on it and the goop formed into the shape of the apple. She zapped it again and the apple started to get covered in the goop before it and the goop in the vase turned into a banana.

"Told you she was good." Ondina says

Mimmi then zapped it again, the banana turning back into an apple and the goop in the vase disappearing. "And mermaid turns back to land girl."

"So how are you going to get Evie to come here?" I ask.

"We're not. The subject can be anywhere as long as I have their essence." Mimmi says, scooping more goop into the vase and zapping it again.

"Northern Pod mermaids know the best spells." Ondina says

"Northern Pod?" I ask, "Aren't they supposed to be dangerous?"

"We can be." Mimmi says, before using her powers on the goop again.

The three of us watched as Mimmi worked with it until it formed the shape of a mermaid. She then clapped and the goop stayed in the mermaid shape.

"Here we go." she says, before zapping it again. Suddenly, there was a bright flash.

"What was that?" Sirena asked.

"I don't know," Mimmi answers as the goop loses the mermaid shape, "Someone's trying to block the spell."

"Evie?" Ondina suggests.

"She hasn't had enough time to master her powers."

"Zac has. Fight him."

Mimmi tries again and things seem to be where they were before.

"What is this doing to Evie?" Sirena asks.

"Restoring her back to normal," Ondina responds.

"Then why is Zac blocking it?" I ask

"Do you want her fixed or not?"

"There's something wrong," Sirena says, running out of the Grotto.

"I'll come with you," I say, following her out.

When we made it to the cafe, we saw Cam look at us before disappearing to the back. We followed him and saw him blocking a door.

"Where's Evie?" Sirena asks.

"What have you done to her?" he responds.

"She's in there isn't she?"

"Sorry, it's off limits, especially to you two."

"If you don't stand out of our way, I'll turn you into a prawn." I say.

Cam doesn't move at first, but when I hold my hand up to use my powers, he quickly stands aside. We open the door and enter the back room to see Evie, in mermaid form and covered to the neck in pink goop, with Zac standing over her.

"Did you two do this?" he asks

"Of course not." Sirena responds, "Mimmi's in Rita's Grotto casting a spell. It's supposed to turn Evie back."

"Well it's not working. I'm going over there to stop them."

Zac left the room and not long after, we could hear someone talking to Cam, trying to get in

"Someone's coming in." Evie says.

"I'm on it," I say before putting my hand on her shoulder and cloaking along with Sirena.

"I'm still here," she says, and we become visible again.

"This stuff must be blocking our powers." Sirena says.

"What if I'm stuck like this forever?" Evie says.

"Don't let yourself think like that," I say.

"We'll find a way to fix this, promise," Sirena adds.

Evie let out a distressed sound and we could hear a female voice, I think they said her name was Carly, trying to get in. I quickly used my powers on the door so she couldn't get in until Evie was fixed. Suddenly, the goop disappeared and Evie's tail was gone. She and Sirena quickly stood up, and I stopped using my powers on the door before standing up too.

Carly was the first to enter, followed by Cam, and the cute guy from earlier today. Sometime, I need to figure out his name.

"Are you okay?" Carly asks.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Evie responds.

"Cam said you and Zac were fighting."

"It was bad," Cam adds, "that's what you said."

"Yeah," Evie says, "worst fight ever."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Carly asks.

"It was nothing, really. I overreacted. I decided to forgive him."

Cam rolled his eyes and left the room.

"That's great," Carly says, "you and Zac are a cute couple."

She and Evie leave the room, Sirena and I following. We went back to the Grotto, but Mimmi and Ondina weren't there, so we swam to the Moon Pool.

"So that didn't work," Ondina says.

"Don't worry, we'll figure something out." I say.

Another mermaid enters the Moon Pool, and when she surfaces, we see it's Evie.

"What are you doing here?" Sirena asks

"I was out swimming and decided to drop in," Evie responds.

"We're so glad you're okay."

"I am now. No thanks to you two and that stunt with the goop."

"Do you want to lose your tail or not?" Ondina asks.

"We were only trying to help you," Mimmi adds.

"Well it didn't work," Evie says, "so don't do it again."

"You have my word on that." Sirena says.

"And mine," I add.

"I want theirs as well," Evie says, "Next time you try something, tell me about it, and we'll work on it together."

"Why should we?" Ondina asks

"You want me to keep your secret, don't you?"

Ondina and Mimmi don't say anything, but give a small smile, and we all laugh a little.

"So, what's with your tail," Evie asks me, "never seen one like that before."

"No one knows for sure," I say, "It's always been like this."

We look up and see that it's getting dark.

"Well, I should get going, see you girls later," Evie says.

"Bye Evie," We all say as she leaves the Moon Pool, and we get ready to get some sleep.
