Chapter 12: Supersized
It was just a quiet day in the Grotto. Mimmi and Sirena had gone out to the cafe, Ondina was looking through a few things, and I was practicing my magic. We hadn't had any great ideas on what to do about Zac, and there wasn't much we could do with helping Evie until she can overcome the moon spell. However, tonight wasn't a full moon, so I continued to review my spells.
"I'm surprised you chose not to go with Sirena and Mimmi today." Ondina suddenly says.
"What do you mean?" I asked her.
"You know what I mean," she says, "I thought you would want to go see Erik."
"I see him every other day," I respond, "and besides, you also could have gone to see if Jasper was there."
"Why would I go to see Jasper?"
"I dunno, but you seem to hang out with him as much as I hang out with Erik." I pause for a moment. "Although, I can't help but feel like there's something else about them, something that they're hiding."
"And what could that be?"
Before I could answer, the doorbell rang. "I'll go get it," I say, exiting the Grotto. When I open the door, I see Erik standing there with our usual order of seafood from the cafe. "Hey," I say.
"Hey. David says sorry it's late." Erik says, handing me the box, and my hands brush against his as I take it. "My shift ends in an hour, and the sad thing is I have absolutely nothing to do for the rest of the day."
"That is sad," I respond, "maybe we could do something about it, together."
"Maybe. Well, I should get back. See you then?"
"Yeah, I'll meet you there."
As Erik leaves, I turn to take the box inside when Sirena rushes over.
"I need that back." she says.
"What?" I ask, "Why?"
"Bad fish." she says.
"They smell fine to me."
"It's the wrong box. David sent me here to get it back."
"It says 'Principal Santos.' What's going on Sirena?"
Sirena sighs before saying "Mimmi's lost her moon ring."
"How did that happen?" I ask
"We were using it to make crayfish bigger. We think it might have fallen in here."
Reluctantly, I helped her get some gloves before taking the box down to the Grotto to search for Mimmi's ring. Ondina of course was curious about what we were doing, and Sirena once again explained it to her. We had pretty much emptied out the box, but the ring wasn't there. Rita then came in and asked what we were doing, but this time I explained the situation. As I helped Rita clean up, Sirena and Ondinda started to get into a dispute about the situation.
"You don't think using magic on the crayfish might have been a touch, how shall I put this, stupid?" Ondina asks.
"It seemed like a good idea at the time," Sirena reasons, "I just wanted to do something nice for David."
"Why would you want to do anything nice for a land boy?" Ondina asks.
"He's not just a land boy. He's special!"
"How do you figure that, exactly?"
"Girls!" Rita intervenes, "This is no time to argue. Losing a moon ring is a serious matter. If Mimmi doesn't find it, she won't get another."
We looked at each other in silence, knowing Rita was right.
"Come on," I say, "let's check back at the cafe. Maybe Mimmi found it, or it's still there."
The three of us quickly left the Grotto and headed to the cafe, where Sirena lead us to the cool room. Mimmi wasn't there, and neither was her ring. Ondina and I still gave a quick scan of the area when Erik came in, asking what we were doing.
"Have you seen Mimmi?" Ondina asks.
"She was here earlier, but she left." he answers.
"Do you know where she went?" Sirena asks.
"Sorry, I don't. So Manoa, you up for a swim?"
"Maybe she found it and went back to Rita's" Sirena says before I could answer.
"We were just ast Rita's." Ondina says
"Where else could she be?"
"I guess we could go back and check."
"You girls go ahead." I say, finally able to chime in.
"What?" Ondina asks.
"Go, I'll catch up." I repeat, and Ondina leaves with Sirena. Now it was just Erik and I. "Sorry about that," I say, "Mimmi lost her ring, and we were trying to help her find it."
"Do you need to help them?" he asks.
I thought about it for a moment. I knew that we needed to help Mimmi find it, but I also said that we would hang out. "I probably should, but I don't know where else Mimmi's ring would be. I might be more help than needed. Race you to Mako." I say before taking off out of the cafe and heading to a nearby pier before diving in the water.
I sped over towards Mako as fast as I could, but this time Erik caught up to me and reached the island first.
"Looks like I won this time," he says when we surfaced.
"But I'll win next time," I say confidently.
"We'll see about that."
"Come on," I say, "there's something I want to show you."
We dove back under and swam around the Mako coast until we found what I was looking for and surfaced again by a large set of rocks near the beach. Looking around to make sure there was no boats around, I pulled myself out of the water and onto the rocks.
"What are you doing?" Erik asks.
"Welcome to one of my favorite places on Mako." I say, "I used to sneak away from the pod and come here on late nights, or just to have some me time. I don't come here as much as I used to, but when I did, I would make sure there were no land people around, climb on the rocks, and relax. Maybe sing a bit."
"I didn't know you were a singer."
"I'm not as good as Sirena. Besides, I always preferred to sing alone. I was thinking this could also be our hangout spot, just the two of us."
"That would be cool. I'd like that. Now come on before we get caught. I'll race you back."
"It's on." I say as I push myself off of the rocks and dive back into the water and we race back to the mainland. We made it back around the same time, so we called it even and I went back to the Grotto and found the girls with Zac. Ondina of course gave me a hard time about staying behind at the cafe, but I just ignored her.
Mimmi then told us how Zac helped her get her ring back. Apparently it was where David's brother stored all the seafood that was caught for the cafe, and Mimmi was caught looking through the boxes. Zac then showed up and helped her by cloaking and getting the ring when no one else was looking. When Ondina asked how he knew, Zac said he had a vision and saw where she was, and that he had been having similar ones for a while. Mimmi admitted that she had also been having visions similar to Zac's. None of us were sure about why just them, but our best theory for now was that Mako was giving Zac more powers than he knew. We chose to go with that for now, but we all knew that something else was going on, something big.
A/N: Wow, Author-Chan lives. Okay so not the most exciting chapter, and one I have been dreading, but I plan on writing a chapter for every episode, even filler ones like this. I struggled with writing this chapter because it was hard to think of something for Manoa and/or Jasper to do in an episode that is basically "Mimmi lost her ring while she and Sirena are playing with magic at the cafe. Will she find it? Oh look, she did, and she and Zac are sharing visions. What could that mean?" Anyway, the next chapter will be more exciting and plot centered. It will also be the last one for Mysteries of Mako. Don't worry, there will be a sequel! Until next time!
