Chapter 1: The Seventh Cycle
"I know what we were taught about mermen, but you have to believe me. Zac's no threat, he's harmless."
I watched with Mimmi and Ondina as Sirena tried to convince Veridia and the Mermaid Council that the merman known as Zac was not the threat the Council said he was. From what I have heard, it's hard to decide if I agree with her or not.
"Sirena, we've had this discussion." Veridia says, "If he wasn't a threat, the pod would not have fled Mako."
"But he's our friend, just ask Nixie and Lyla."
"They've gone to join the search for a new home. The pod can't stay here in the open ocean."
"Zac proved himself. He destroyed the Trident." Sirena argued.
"There are things you don't understand. Tonight the merman will enter the Seventh Cycle of the Moon. His connection to Mako will deepen. He won't be able to control himself. Like it or not, he is an enemy. To All mermaids."
With that, everyone left, leaving just the four of us. I was the first to swim towards Sirena, Mimmi and Ondina following.
"We have to do something about this merman." Ondina says.
"We tried," Sirena responds, "he was in the Moon Pool during a full moon and he didn't loose his powers."
"Maybe he wasn't in there long enough," I suggested
"Exactly. you may have tried, but Mimmi, Manoa, and I haven't." Ondina adds.
"Ondina, whatever you are suggesting, the Mermaid Council will never agree." Mimmi points out.
"I know. That's why we're not going to ask them."
"Alright," Sirena says, "You three can come, now follow me."
With that, we dived under and followed her as we torpedoed away. When we surfaced, we were in a place similar to the Moon Pool.
"What is this place?" I asked, looking around.
"Somewhere safe." Sirena responds, taking off her Moon Ring and setting it on the edge.
"Is the boy here?" Mimmi asked.
"No." Sirena turned to us, "There's something you need before you meet him."
The three of us watched as she pulled herself out of the water. Next thing we knew, Sirena had legs. She wore a white top, a denim miniskirt, and white sneakers.
"Legs?" Ondina asked, clearly not too fond of the idea.
"If you're going to talk to Zac, you've got to get them too." Sirena responds before putting on her Moon Ring. "But first, you'll need some clothes."
She quickly left the room and returned moments later with a pile of clothes and sorted them into three groups, one for each of us.
"So, who's first?" she asked.
Mimmi and Ondina looked at each other while I didn't hesitate to take off my moon ring and pull myself out. When I was dried off, I got dressed in a light blue shirt and denim shorts, with Sirena's help, and sat down to put on some white flats. Mimmi then got out and put on a black floral dress with white sneakers, and Ondina followed last with a pink tank top, aqua shorts, and light blue sneakers.
With that, Sirena went back into the other room, while the rest of us followed, supporting each other as we tried walking for the first time. Seriously though, land people make it look too easy.
"I don't understand how land people move on these stupid things," Ondina comments as Sirena helps us down some steps.
"A mermaid lives here," Mimmi says as she looks around.
"Her name's Rita," Sirena informs us, "she's a friend."
We then notice a fluffy white cat walk over to us and sit down.
"CAT!" Mimmi and Ondina scream before bumping into each other, while I look at Sirena to see if i'ts harmless.
"Hey Poseidon. I've missed you," Sirena says, picking up the cat and petting it. "He won't hurt you. Poseidon's a friend like Zac."
"Where's the boy?" Ondina asks as Sirena sets the cat down.
"You do realize land people are different." Sirena points out. "Just follow my lead and try not to do anything to stand out." That last part sounded more like a question than a statement.
"We'll fit in just fine." I say
We followed Sirena to a place called The Ocean Cafe, and our walking has improved greatly. 'So this is what it looks like on land,' I thought to myself.
"That's him," Sirena whispers to us as she quickly points to a guy with dark hair and a blue and black striped tee.
"Him?" Mimmi asked.
"He's not going to be a problem," Ondina adds.
"I'll introduce you," Sirena says as we start to approach him.
"Sirena!" a male voice says
"David! it's so good to see you."
While she was talking to the land boy, the three of us sat down in front of Zac.
"Sirena says you're harmless." I say.
"Excuse me?" he asks
"If you do what we tell you, you'll be fine." Ondina says
"And everything will go back to normal." Mimmi adds.
"Oh, so you three are-"
"I'm Ondina, she's Mimmi, and that's Manoa."
"Hello," Mimmi and I say together.
"We're here to solve your problem," Ondina says, "you go back to being a land boy, the pod returns to Mako, everybody's happy."
"Except I'm happy the way I am." Zac says
Before we could say anything more, a boy with a light purple shirt came over to us. Oh my Neptune was he cute.
"Hi, what can I get you?" he asks. I guess he works here.
"Fish burger, thanks." Zac says.
"Ladies?" he asks, looking at us.
"What?" Ondina asks.
"Something to eat? Something to drink?"
"Whatever you recommend." I say in an attempt to break the confusion.
"Alright, I bet you two are coconut smoothie girls, then. Serves in a coconut shell with a straw and a cute little umbrella. I'll be right back with that." he says before leaving.
"As I was saying-"
"Guys, I appreciate you coming all this way," It was Zac's turn to interrupt Ondina, "but there's really nothing to worry about." With that, he got up and went inside the cafe.
Onina and Mimmi got up and followed, but I chose to stay and wait for them to come back, or until Sirena told us we had to leave. Not long after, Zac and Ondina returned and sat down.
"Maybe we haven't been clear." Ondina says.
Zac tries to get up and move, but is suddenly forced back down. Ondina must have used her powers.
"Tonight, you're going to do exactly what we say." she adds.
"The thing is," Zac says before using his powers on us as we hold on to the table, "I like to make up my own mind. I don't take orders from you."
All I did was watch the two as the other guy came back with our drinks. Ondina and I gave him a small smile before turning our attention back to Zac.
"I think it might be better if you went home." he says
"That's what we're trying to do," she responds.
I then notice that the tables around us started to shake.
"Ondina, maybe you should stop." I say, but she didn't seem to hear me. "Seriously, both of you, you're going to draw attention to us." Just as I said that, the drinks in front of us splashed us.
"Are we-"
"Yes."
The three of us quickly got up, jumped over the edge and in the water. When the bubbles cleared, Zac gave us a what the heck look, but Ondina just torpedoed away. I then noticed Zac was staring at my tail before looking at me. I simply shrugged before torpedoing after Ondina.
~Back at the Moon Pool~
"I told you to be careful." Sirena scolded, looking at Ondina and I specifically.
"He attacked us!" she responds
"You started it." Mimmi and I say
"The boy is not going to listen to us," Ondina says, "we have to look after him tonight."
I look up through the volcano and notice the sky darken. "It's getting dark. Where will he be?"
"Probably at the cafe," Sirena answers, "I'm gonna be singing."
"Why?" Ondina asks.
"David asked me. He's written songs about me I'm supposed to be rehearsing."
"Do that. We'll meet you there." Mimmi says.
"Don't do anything without checking with me first," Sirena instructs before leaving.
"I'm heading out, too. See you at the cafe." I say before leaving as well.
~Later that night, THIS HAPPENED~
I sat with a few land people as we all watched Sirena sing. The song was not like anything I've heard her sing before, but I loved it. I might have to look into the music land people listen to while I'm here. Ondina later came in and sat by the wall. When Sirena finished her song, we all started applauding before she started singing another one. Some time later, I saw Mimmi come in and sit by Ondina. They were talking about something, but I couldn't tell what.
Sirena finished her song and I noticed Zac quickly leave the cafe. Sirena and I stood and walked over to the brown-haired girl he was with and a boy with blond hair.
"Zac's being drawn to Mako," the girl says, "we can't let him go there."
"Come on," Sirena says before the four of us leave.
Zac was standing by where we jumped off earlier today, and the four of us walked over to him.
"Zac?" Sirena asks
"I need to get to Mako." he says.
"You said you had it under control," the girl says.
"Come back with us." I say.
"Yeah, man, it's too dangerous." the boy adds.
Zac turns to face him. "This has nothing to do with you."
"I know we've had our differences but you need to come back inside."
"Don't tell me what I need!"
"Look, take it easy-" the boy was suddenly thrown back, and we turn to see that Mimmi and Ondina had used their powers on him.
Zac took his chance and ran to the pier, the girl calling after him.
"You want him to go..." Sirena says, disappointed, as Mimmi and Ondina race after Zac and dive into the water.
"What are they gonna do to him?" the girl asked us.
"I don't know, they didn't tell me." Sirena responds, "Manoa?"
"You know as much as I do." I answer.
"Cam, come on, we're going after him." The girl says while walking away, but the boy, Cam, just shook his head. "Whatever happened between you two, get over it." she adds, "Zac needs our help."
"We'll come with you," Sirena says, only to be stopped by David.
Cam and the girl ran to a boat and got on while I dived into the water and torpedoed to Mako. When I made it to the Moon Pool, I saw something green surrounding Zac, and Mimmi and Ondina seemed to be controlling it.
"What are you two doing!?" I asked, looking at them, and back to Zac.
"Getting our home back." Mimmi answers, not looking at me.
"And you didn't tell Sirena or I what you were doing?"
"Sirena wouldn't have allowed it and you would have told Sirena." Ondina responds.
"Stop it, or I will." I say, holding my hand up.
The two mermaids ignored me and looked up at the moon.
"Get ready," Mimmi says, "Now!"
They zapped it again and I watched as the thing seemed to close in on Zac, but then the girl from the cafe popped up.
"Zac," she says.
"Evie, what are you doing here?" he asked
Shortly after, the thing disappeared and Evie was knocked out.
"Evie! What have you done? Evie!" Zac started to panic.
Mimmi and Ondina took this time to leave, while I moved closer.
"Stay back!" Zac says, trying to force me away.
"If you haven't noticed, I haven't done a thing to you all day. At least let me try to help out this time." I respond, sounding offended.
"How?"
Before I could answer, the moon passed over and Evie woke up.
"Zac, are you alright?" She asked, hugging him.
Deciding not to ruin the moment, I left and went to find the others.
~The Next Morning~
I waited with Sirena as Mimmi and Ondina swam into the Moon Pool.
"What happened last night?" she asked
"Nothing." Ondina responds quickly, "Mimmi's potion didn't work."
"I don't understand," Mimmi adds, "he was hit with the force of fifty moons"
"Maybe the girl affected it's power." Ondina suggests.
"What girl?" Sirena asks
"Zac wasn't the only land person in the pool that night," I say.
"Evie? She was in the Moon Pool under a full moon?"
"You don't think..." Mimmi starts, and the four of us swim out to try and find her.
When we did find her, she was at the Marina with Zac, so we surfaced by a boat close by and watched.
"You sure you're okay with the whole...water thing?" Zac asks her.
"How many times do I have to tell you, I'm totally fine," Evie says before reaching for a hose and spraying water on her hand. "See?" Right after she said that, she fell into the water. When she came up, she had a tail. "Zac!"
"Evie," he says calmly.
"What have you done?" Sirena says, looking at us, then back at them.
