50- Memories
It's been more than a month since you got back from the States. It took you almost two weeks to get everything settled. Ray wasn't thrilled at all when you handed him your resignation notice. When he got over it, he told you that you're always welcome to come back. You thank him for all the opportunities that he's given you. It made you sentimental and you even cried on your last day.
Your friends from work throw a special going away party where they made a short video clip of you since you started. Pictures of you with businessmen and women who you did translations for slowly transitioning into more public assignments up to your last client, Yoongi.
Everyone teased you when a picture pops up of you and Yoongi during the press conference in New York. Your eyes were locked and both of you looked happy over a question that had been asked. You can almost remember how you felt back then. That was before things had gotten so complicated between you. You've never seen that picture before and Ray explains that Yoongi's company requested for that picture not to get published to avoid any kind of controversy. You've asked for a copy of that picture though, a memory of your special time with him before everything turned into a mess.
Kylee was still upset over your decision especially when she found out about your last encounter with Crystal. You guarantee her that you'll be fine. You have no choice but to accept this predicament and just move on with your life. JK promised you that he'll take care of your sister and that made you feel at ease about leaving her. She promised to visit you and you will do the same thing, as often as you can.
You made it clear to Elin that you don't want to hear any updates about Yoongi or Crystal. You also stay away from his friends although seeing Hoseok is unavoidable because of your cousin. Not once has he mentioned Yoongi to you. They respected your wishes.
Whenever you're alone, you think of how Crystal might be showing more by now. They probably know the gender of the baby too. Yoongi's parents might be excited to see their future grandson or granddaughter. You don't know what Yoongi intends to do with his relationship with Crystal either. You have no intention of knowing. You've cried enough and although you're still hurting, you continue to move on with your life. Love isn't very good to you because everything failed.
Working at the center turned into therapy for you. It's fun to teach everyone how to speak English. They take the lessons seriously and you're pleased with the results as they manage to understand and speak the language little by little. You tutor for their grandchildren too. It didn't meet the monthly wage you used to get back in the States but it's better than not having anything. It gave you time to be around your grandmother as much as you can.
*********************
"Wait for me Grandma." You call out behind your grandmother while carrying a heavy basket that had the vegetables she harvested from her garden. She's bringing it to the community center where she used to go when she was staying at your previous home. The house had sold recently but she visits her friends every week and today, she wanted to share her harvest to them. You had no idea your grandmother can be Ms. Congeniality because she is everyone's friend wherever she goes. Because of this, your arms were killing you from all the vegetables she will be giving away. You know you're just a few steps away from the entrance of the building, but it seems like it's farther as you carried the heavy basket.
Elin's dad religiously picks both of you up every week, drops you at the center, then you spend the night at their place. Elin drives you back home as soon as she finishes her work. This had been your weekly routine now.
"You should've let your uncle carry that. Look at you now. Such a stubborn child." She clucks her tongue at you.
"Uncle's arthritis is bothering him so I don't want him carrying things. Besides, I believe I got this stubbornness from you so you shouldn't be putting all the blame on me." You joke. The two of you have gotten closer after having spent so many hours together. You're happy about making the choice to stay with her.
"Try not to be too much like me or you might end up single and alone. I got lucky that your grandfather didn't give up on me. I hope you find someone just like him. You can't find him if you don't start looking for one." She pointedly looks at you.
"Nice try grandma, I am still not dating any of your friends' grandsons." For the past two weeks, she's been trying to discreetly tell you about how you should start going out again. That you should meet men and not hang out with a bunch of old people. You complain to her that it hasn't been that long since your last relationship ended.
You're not ready for anything yet. You were only open for one person before, unfortunately, he is not available anymore either. Your dreams of a happy ending have completely fallen apart when you found out he is fathering another woman's child. You push that thought away. You haven't told your grandmother about that yet.
Your grandmother moves towards you to help you with the basket as you were about to climb up the steps at the building's entrance.
"Grandma, I can do it, you might end up hurting yourself."
Your grandmother ignores you as she grabs one edge of the basket, lifting it up.
"Stop grandma." You tell her as you slowly placed the basket down on the ground so that she'd have no choice but to put her side down too.
"I have been carrying things way heavier than this before so don't you think that I can't do this." She argues with you as she lifts up the basket again.
"Unnie, that looks very heavy. Let us give you a hand." A woman calls out behind you and your grandmother.
Both you and your grandmother turn to the woman who just arrived. Your eyes move to the person next to her and your breath gets caught in your throat. It almost is impossible to believe that the person you're trying to avoid seeing is here at the center where mostly elderly people go. You look back at the person next to him, your first thought was that she's, his mother. She looks familiar to you.
Yoongi's eyes meet yours and his eyebrows knit together. You don't know if he's annoyed or surprised to see you. He does turn to your grandmother and bow politely at her.
"Go help the poor girl, Yoongi. That basket looks heavy." The old lady turns to your grandmother. "Unnie, is she your granddaughter you've been telling me about?"
"Yes, that's her. Y/N, this is Mrs. Kang. You haven't met her yet because she's been away. I'm glad to see you back Sun-An." Your grandmother looks at Yoongi then you see the recognition in her eyes. She remembers him because she then looks at you.
"I was supposed to go back last week but he won't let me." He looks pointedly at Yoongi. "This is Yoongi, by the way. We may not be related by blood, but he is more than a family to me. He cares for me more than my actual family. " She looks at him and you see how she appreciates what he is doing for her.
No wonder she looks familiar to you, you've met her before because Yoongi made you meet her. She is the owner of the building where the club is. Correction, she used to be the owner, since it's owned by Yoongi and his friends now. You still haven't heard the complete story behind that yet. She's the lady who allowed Yoongi to live and work at the building and treated him like a son. Even if you've met before, she didn't recognize who you are. You can't blame her; you've only met once, and it was more than eight years ago. You almost didn't recognize her until you heard her name.
You greet her politely with a smile. You did not bring up the subject of having met her before because you don't want to be in the awkward position of having to explain how the two of you met.
"Imo, you've met Y/N before." Yoongi reminds her. You did not expect him to say that. You thought that he'll just let it pass without reminding her.
"I did?" Mrs. Kang stares into space as if trying to recall when and where you've met. You see the pained expression on Yoongi's face as he watched her. She looks at you again and tilts her head. "She does look familiar."
"Really?" Yoongi asks.
"You have to remind me when and how I met her though." Mrs. Kang replies. She turns to your grandmother and asks. "I didn't know they know each other unnie."
Your grandmother who had been quiet all the while smiles at the other lady.
"I didn't know that he is the Yoongi you were telling me you wanted Y/N to meet."
You are startled to hear that one of the guys your grandmother is trying to set you up for a blind date turned out to be Yoongi. You throw him a sideways glance and you catch him staring at you. He immediately looks away and starts to walk towards the basket in front of you.
You move your right arm behind you because you didn't want him to see that you're wearing the bracelet he gave you. It is the only accessory you've been wearing since you broke your engagement. It means so much to you especially now that the memories and this bracelet are all you have left of your happy moments together.
His nearness made you get a whiff of his familiar scent. You feel the butterflies in your stomach as your heart starts to beat faster even though you know that you shouldn't be feeling anything for him anymore. He is still like a kryptonite to you, being close to him makes you weak.
"Y/N, please show Yoongi to the pantry. I'll hand them out later." Your grandmother tells you. She tried to look as if she said that unintentionally, but you know very well what she is trying to do. You haven't told her about Crystal yet.
Yoongi lifts the basket, and he turns to you. "Damn, you carried this?"
You gave him a smile and you see him pause for a second before he clears his throat. "Lead the way, I don't know where the pantry is." He turns to Mrs. Kang and your grandmother, and he gives them a polite bow as he follows you behind.
You greet Mr. Paik at the reception area, and your head turns towards the tv when you heard "Crushed" being played on it. You see a clip of his music video and a talk show comes on showing Agust D as the special guest. You turn to Yoongi behind you.
"That was prerecorded yesterday." He tells you.
Silence follows as both of you heads towards the pantry. You asked him to place it on top of the table and you thanked him after he did what you asked him. A pin can drop, and you'll hear the sound of it as silence fills the room.
Yoongi was the first one to break it. "Imo, is sick. The doctor diagnosed her with Alzheimer's which is why her memory isn't very good anymore. It's not in the advanced stage yet but eventually, it might get there." He clears his throat when his voice started to shake at the end of his sentence.
You know he is holding back his feelings as he told you the news. Mrs. Kang had been very good to him over the years, and she is family to him. You can understand why he's feeling emotional. You almost stepped forward to hug and comfort him, but you stop yourself. You can't be doing that to him anymore.
"I'm so sorry to hear that, Yoongi. If there's any way that I can help, just let me know"
His eyes search your face when you made him realize that you are still there for him if you need him. He felt the sincerity of your words.
"Thank you." He paused before he continues. "I thought you already went back to the States."
You knew this question would come soon. You try to answer truthfully but you know you'd have to hold back some information that you feel he didn't have to know.
"I did leave but I had to go back to take care of grandma. She wants to live alone, and I can't have her do that."
"That means you'll be here for a long time." He continues.
You shrug. "Only until I convince her to live with Elin's family."
Another awkward silence passed with the two of you trying hard not to be obvious that both of you are checking each other out. He has lost some weight, but he still looks great. His hair has gone longer now, longer compared to the last time you were together. You want to run your fingers through them again...no, you can't. You stop those thoughts. It's not going to do you any good anymore. You recall the last time you saw each other. He made you feel the distance between you has gone wide with Crystal in the picture.
You see the muscles in Yoongi's jaw tense as his eyes drop to your wrist. He's looking at the bracelet he gave you. You feel ashamed for having been caught. You probably look pathetic holding on to something even though you know he can't be yours anymore.
You stand straight and cleared your throat.
"We should probably go back. Grandma and Mrs. Kang might be wondering where we are."
Yoongi nods and follows behind you as you hurriedly left the pantry. You hear his phone ring, and he answers it. You didn't hear much except that he needs to be somewhere soon.
When you find your grandmother and Mrs. Kang, Yoongi tells them he needed to leave for a meeting for work. He turns to you, and he slightly bows his head in your direction. His eyes drop to your lips briefly and you can't help but do the same too. You feel your cheeks burn when he catches your eyes. His expression remains blank when he turned his back to leave.
