The free movement of goods across national borders has long been a controversial issue. Some people argue that it is necessary for economic growth, while others claim that it damages local industries.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
In the globalised world, free trade between nations has become a growing trend in the international economy. While some people think that this can make great contribution to the national economic growth, others state that it can be a threat to local industries. In my essay, I would like to discuss both views and state my own perspective.
Those who support free global trade believe that it can be advantageous to the economic growth. To begin with, free shipping policies can attract more foreign investment. Thanks to it, national businesses and enterprises can easily get access to a wide range of suppliers and consumers in other countries without or with paying lower taxes. Therefore, profit could be increased for both local companies and national economy. Furthermore, free cross-border trade in the world trade organizations not only tighten relationship between countries but also enhance profits for local industries. For example, without a trade embargo, countries in the EU can conveniently learn experience and help each other on different aspects and boost commercial import and export opportunities.
However, those who oppose free global trade think that it has damaged local industries to a certain extent. Firstly, free movement of goods has created the equal competitiveness between national and foreign businesses. Therefore, if product quality of local industry is not good, it will be replaced by another with better quality and reasonable price. Secondly, citizens can buy quite a number of imported products at lower cost thanks to free trade between nations. Free shipping policies could get consumers to have a tendency to buy stuffs made from other countries rather than domestic ones. As a consequence, local companies’ sales and profits may decrease if they fail to regulate price logically as well as improving the quality of the products.
In conclusion, free movement of goods between nations has long been a debatable issue between supporters and antagonists. In my perspective, I am in favour of the free shipping policies as they are necessary for the sustainable growth of the national economy and they have local industries care more about consumers’ needs and constantly develop their new products to add value to the national and global economy.
