People say that reading for pleasure helps people to develop imagination and better language skills than watch TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Recently, people have had a plethora of ways to acquire knowledge. Some believe that reading spurs individual imagination and language skills much more than watching TV. From my perspective, I am all in favor of this notion.

On the one hand, reading books and novels is an active form of learning, allowing people to create and memorize concepts more clearly and lastingly. To begin with, reading can help push readers’ creativity. For example, when reading fiction novels, readers can convert words into images described therein. Furthermore, the process of reading also enables learners to develop their language skills. Many English learners, for instance, choose to read English classic books to expand their vocabulary and comprehend the syntax.

On the other hand, watching TV is mostly a passive form of learning. First, it is almost unnecessary for viewers to put extra effort in thinking as the visualization is given and predefined by TV programs. With motions pictures, those who spend more time watching TV will be most likely to be lazy to conceptualize any originality in imagination. Second, prolonged exposure to TV may not help forge people’s language skills. Many studies have revealed that children staring at the TV screen may struggle to write long or well-structured stories and develop their linguistic ability.

In conclusion, I completely agree with the thought that reading can be far superior to watching TV in terms of creativity and language development since reading gives people total control of their minds. In a world flooded with information, the ability to control our thoughts is the key to improve ourselves.
