Transport delays and long journey times are a widespread phenomenon in many cities today.
What are the causes of this problem, and how could the situation be improved?
Transport delays and lengthy journeys have been increasingly popular and causing bad consequences in most urban areas all over the world. There appear to be two main causes of this problem and some feasible solutions to it as I will explain here.
To begin with, the lack of investment or funding for infrastructure in the form of high capacity public transport and increased road space for private vehicles might be the primary factor that causes the lateness of transport. There are too many vehicles using the existing transport network, and congestion is inevitable. For example, traffic controllers in big cities like Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City frequently have to confront traffic congestion at transport hubs especially in rush hours. As a consequence, it is quite difficult and complicated to guarantee transport’s punctuality. Furthermore, a cause seems to be the problem of overcrowding in cities, whereby people migrate from the rural and settle in urban areas, putting strain on amenities, housing and above all on transport capacity. This means that an already stretched system is often pushed to a critical point, causing cancellations and breakdowns in the transport network.
To overcome the above mentioned limitations of transport, governments and individuals have to take several potential solutions. Firstly, governments should encourage more investment in constructing better infrastructure and improving road and landscape quality to ensure the smooth running of the transport. Secondly, local authority should put more effort in ameliorating public transportation and encourage citizens to commute to work to decrease traffic congestion. A final response might be the development of more flexible patterns of transport, such as communal car- pooling, which would reduce reliance on existing systems and private vehicles.
In conclusion, bad infrastructure and overcrowding have resulted in transport delays and transport frustrations. Therefore, possible solutions would involve better funding, and also innovations in ways of working and travelling to reduce the burden on the system.
