We will survive probably
We will survive probably” is the title of the Opinion which was written by Nicholas Kristof at the New York Times on March 6 2019. He has been a columnist for The New York Times since 2001 and won two Pulitzer Prizes . He wrote this article to share his thought that “ American democracy is too resilient for Trump to destroy”. He used mountain of evidence to strengthen his claim. Firstly, he highly appreciated the strength of American institutions and norms by extracting words of Representative Adam Schiff “ This is a moment of great peril for our democracy”. Secondly, Trump ‘s decision have to be considered by the Congress, Courts,...For example, Trump in 2017 told aides to block a merger between AT&T and Time Warner, apparently to punish CNN for its news coverage while helping Fox News. This was utterly inappropriate, so aides ignored him. Levitsky used to say:’Trump faced pushback on multiple fronts, including, very importantly, the electoral front in November 2018. So, yes, U.S. democracy is hard to kill”.
“We will survive probably’ can be considered as the author’s view than a fact. It shows Kristof ‘s perspective bwcause in the article, readers can see “ I think”, “ I hope”. Therefore, the article may not be neutral. The article can demonstrate Kristof bias towards the issue that “American democracy is too resilient for Trump to destroy. Therefore, this article can be a reference, issue’s approach toward an event or a fact because this article gives strong evidence to strengthen Kristof claim by giving thoughts, quotes of some politicians and scholars and has deep analysis .
Many scholars have been favored with Kristof idea. Besides, the separation of powers also support the idea of Kristof. The United States Constitution is deliberately inefficient. The Separation of Powers devised by the framers of the Constitution was designed to do one primary thing: to prevent the majority from ruling with an iron fist. Based on their experience, the framers shied away from giving any branch of the new government too much power. The separation of powers provides a system of shared power known as Checks and Balances. Three branches are created in the Constitution. The Legislative, composed of the House and Senate, is set up in Article 1. The Executive, composed of the President, Vice-President, and the Departments, is set up in Article 2. The Judicial, composed of the federal courts and the Supreme Court, is set up in Article 3. Each of these branches has certain powers, and each of these powers is limited, or checked, by another branch. For example, the President appoints judges and departmental secretaries. But these appointments must be approved by the Senate. The Congress can pass a law, but the President can veto it. The Supreme Court can rule a law to be unconstitutional, but the Congress, with the States, can amend the Constitution. Therefore, Trump decision can be hard to make into practice if it violates the constitution, law and policies of the U.S.
“We will survive probably” may be not a new subject because many journalists had written about this issue before. This opinion of Nicholas Kristof put emphasised on the current situation in America originating from many factors and Trump is not a prevailing one that leads to American crisis like some Trump antagonists used to say.
