Speaking 9
Describe something you liked very much which you bought for your home.
You should say:
What you bought
When and where you bought
Why you chose this particular thing
And explain why you liked it so much.
I would like to tell you about a bookshelf which I bought three years ago when I passed the university entrance exam with flying colors. It is a large wooden bookshelf which has five layers and it is located in my room so that I can arrange all my books neatly there. For the top three layers, I arrange my academic books, and for two layers at the bottom, I put various kinds of English, French as well as story books like romantics, fiction and comedies and so on.
As I’m a bookworm, I find having it is so convenient because it allows me to look for my favorite books more easily. It would be great in rainy days when I stay at home, kick back on the sofa and feel lost in the real page turners. Since I have had this bookshelf, I feel that I have developed more interests in reading books and my reading skills and lexical resource are enhanced significantly. In my free time, I pay a visit to bookshops and purchase a lot of books for myself, display them on this bookshelf and read them in my leisure time. The bookshelf comes in handy for me and it’s like my fascinating place where I seek comfort when I am not in a good mood.
Question 1: What are the most popular types of children’s books in your country?
Well, the ones with many colorful images like comics could be children’s favorite books in our country nowadays. However, in this state-of-the-art world while the technology and Internet are dominating, children tend to read less and spend their time playing games online instead.
Question 2: What are the benefits of parents reading books to their children?
Totally parents should read books to their children, especially bedtime reading books. It not only nurtures their children’s soul about cultures and people in different places, but also establishes a close-knit relationship between parents and children.
Questions 3: Should parents always let children choose the books they read?
Although it seems as if letting kids choose their own reading material will ensure they get something they like, it doesn't always work. I think many of them need guidance. There are ways to prompt kids to pick out suitable books without taking over. Ask them which subjects they like, which previous books they enjoyed, who their heroes are, or which hobbies they enjoy. You also can toss in a few books you like and offer to read them aloud.
Electronic books
Question 1: How popular are electronic books in your country?
With 55 million internet and smartphone users, e-books are becoming more common in Vietnam’s publishing industry. However, as the commercial infrastructure for e-publication trade is still limited, there are more challenges than opportunities.
After five years of development, the e-book market is still at a moderate level with just a few well-known names such as Ybook and Alezza. The problem lies in distribution. In general, e-book developers only sell their own e-books and rarely sell books developed by others.
Question 2: What are the advantages of reading electronic books compared to printed books?
In my opinion, the most significant advantage of reading digital books is that, it makes our every reading experience hassle-free. As we all know, e-books can be accessed conveniently. We can actually read whenever and wherever we please. Therefore, more and more people have the opportunity to gather information and learn. For example, in the past, people need to buy books or borrow from the library in order to do their homework or to study but today they can study without bothering to go to other places because all they need is their smartphone or tablet.
Question 3: Will electronic books ever completely replace printed books in the future?
As much as e-books are super convenient, that is one of their only few advantages. When you are holding a physical book, it is always much easier to absorb the information - you can feel everything within a paper book much more, whether it be fiction or non-fiction, of any type. Therefore, I don’t believe they will ever be able to truly replace physical books.
With real books, readers can flip back and forth easily and mark pages with a paper clip or bookmark. They can refer back to something they may have forgotten, or even just go back and admire the foreshadowing which leads them to the plot twist they are currently at. However, e-books don’t always allow for such smooth browsing. They can be slow to respond, resulting in a lag when you try to flip through the pages.
