Reading

Where do you usually get your news from? How credible are those sources?  How do you know that?

Reading daily newspaper can be a good habit for us to vary our knowledge in different social aspects, be updated with current news taking place on the global sphere and expand our vocabulary to a higher level. However, choosing a credible source is more and more harder especially when fake news has gone viral. Therefore, I have to carefully check the trustworthiness of any newspaper before getting piece of news or information. From my perspective, The New York Times and BBC are my wise choice to maintain my good habit.

According to Christina Nagler, an author of “ 4 tips for spotting a fake news story”,a news can prove its credibility if it is highly appreciated by a fact-checking website,.... ” The rise of fake news” also said that if we want to stop fake news spreading, we have to ensure that the websites or newspapers we read are legitimate by looking carefully at the domain name and the about us section .Therefore, from my point of view the New York Times and BBC are proned to be reliable. According to media bias or fast check, although the New York Times  favors the left, but highly factual and considered one of the most reliable sources for information due to proper sourcing. It was founded by U.S. journalist and politician Henry Jarvis Raymond and former banker George Jones. has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol NYT. The New York Times has had well respected journalists and editors such as A. M. Rosenthal, Maggie Haberman,... .According to media bias or fast check, BBC news can be highly appreciated on acccount of their proper sourcing information. BBC is an Britain public broadcaster which was founded by The British Broadcasting Company in 1922 .When reporting general news the BBC always sources its information and uses minimal loaded words in headlines such as this: Trump chief of staff John Kelly to leave White House job. When it comes to reporting on the USA and in particular President Donald Trump, there is a negative tone directed at Trump and his policies. In general, the BBC covers both sides of stories, with a slight bias in favor of the left. BBC has well reputed journalists and editors such as kate Adie.

What do you think are the dangers of fake news? Why do you think the world has come to this?

According to Christina Nagler, an author of “ 4 tips for spotting a fake news story”, readers circulated these false stories or news because of their eye-poping headlines in our social media and confirmation bias. The amount of fake news has significantly increased because of political motives. For example, in an electoral campaign,a candidate may belittle or incriminate their opponents. People also create fake news for the profit. In the article”The city getting rich from fake news” by Emma Jane Kirby, a group of adolescents in Macedonia making fake news because they can bring a huge amount of money for them to pursue material wealth. The most dangerous thing is that instead of giving them a bit of their mind or guiding these wrong-doing teenagers, the town mayor as well as their relatives encourage them or be indifferent because they can make their end meets. Fake news has provoke serious corollaries. First of all, people who read and trust fake news somehow can cause devastating effects . For example, in the case of pzzagate, a man decided to “self- investigate” a pizza parlor in Washington DC , armed himself, fired a shot and terrified bystanders after reading Clinton’s child abuse allegations in a newspaper. Secondly, a fake news or story can throw some political representatives or bussinessmen into turmoil and ruin their carrer. As a result, making up stories can make some citizens believe and follow, and also have a false look to some politics especially in an electoral campaign.
