Traits and Territory:
Most Common Eye Colours: Amber and Yellow, although Hazel isn't uncommon either.
Common Pelts and Patterns: CliffClan needs to blend into the rugged, sandy, bare landscape of their territory. To suit that, most cats in the Clan have ginger, tan, brown, or other pale, natural colors that allow them to hunt more easily. They often also have large ears, long limbs, and thin fur to regulate summer temperatures, with their pelt thickening in colder seasons.
Personality: CliffClan doesn't like to fight nor cause drama; they are content with simply existing in their own little world, with no other Clans around them. They're known to be compassionate and accept Loners and Wanderers in very easily. They are elusive to other large groups and Twolegs and are proven to be very intelligent, to compensate for how many challenges they have to face from their home, and the wildlife and weather in it every day. Their non-confrontative nature allows them to live peacefully but sometimes causes problems when they're being pushed by other groups of cats, or hostile wildlife.
Trademark: Elusive and Intelligent
Voice: Even and calm, although sometimes raspy and croaky in the summer due to the heat and dryness.
Territory: Modled around the Badlands around Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, CliffClan's territory is nothing short of brutal. With hardly any plant life, besides Prickly Pear Cacti, small bushes, sagebrush, thin, scraggly grasses, and stunted trees, only one river (Red Deer River) flowing through the jagged cliffs and deep gorges of the land, and dusty, dry sand covering every surface, the cats of CliffClan have to learn to adapt to these harsh conditions every day. Winds on high ledges blow so hard, that they knock cats off of their paws, and the ground is full of jagged, sharp stones. There are layers of different colored sandstone in the Hoodoes and cliffs, which add life and color to the barren landscape. The river that runs through CliffClan's territory is shallow and thick, clay-filled mud lines almost every bank, making another dangerous trap for any cat that isn't careful. There are crayfish, and small, hardy fish in it, but they are only available to the cats brave enough to take a swim. Crayfish are a treasured treat to kits and are traded like currency. At the banks of the river, around two minutes from camp, in a rare patch of shade, there's a herb growing patch, protected by Cacti. Herbs are scarce, so any that are found are immediately transplanted and cared for in the regulated patch.
Images Similar to Their Territory:
Camp: Nestled in a hollow between two large cliffs, lies a camp, made comfortable by moons of hard work, and weekly upkeep from dedicated Guardians. The sand is soft, crushed into fine powder by hundreds of paw steps treading across it daily. One large cottonwood tree, one of the only trees able to grow in such a dry place, holds the Medicine Den, with herbs and nests for the sick under the roots, and the nests of the three Healers in a hollow in the trunk. Directly across from the cottonwood tree, is a large stone pillar, flat at the top and tapering in the middle. The leader sleeps in a nest on top of the pillar, under the stars; a sacrifice he chooses to make, leaving himself vulnerable to the elements, and keeping his Clan safe and warm. If the weather is really extreme, he sleeps in the roots of the Medicine Den.
The dens are made of a skeleton of branches, gathered from the scraggly trees near the riverbank, and the cottonwood tree, and re-inforced with thick layers of mud gathered from the river. The heavy amounts of clay in the mud create a solid, thick shell, that is rainproof and keeps the sun out. It tends to crack when hot, so repairs must be made often.
The nursery is extra thick and protected with cacti, due to the coyotes who often try to sneak into camp and grab a quick meal.
Flash-Flooding is extremely common in the Badlands, because of the rarity and ferocity of the storms. Because of that, a trench has been dug through the camp, leading to a small pool, that fills up and offers water for moons to come. There are large rocks all over the camp that CliffClan cats enjoy sleeping and sunbathing on, and kits love playing hide-and-seek among them.
Most Common Cause of Death: Accidents relating to the terrain and wildlife; Such as being swept off of cliffs in the harsh wind, infection from cacti spikes being stuck in hard-to-reach places, being attacked by coyotes, becoming stuck and drowning in mud, and falling onto sharp stones. Essentially, death is a mixed bag for these cats; Mortality rates and injury rates are high, and death occurs randomly. Everything is out to kill CliffClan, which is why they do not have a large Clan.
Favourite Prey: Voles, mice, and desert birds. Crayfish and trout are also rare and tasty treats.
Biggest Enemy: The Terrain and Wildlife
Biggest Allegiance: The many Wanderers and Loners that roam the land, occasionally sheltering with CliffClan for a while, or choosing to join them.
Borders: None. Nothing but empty land for miles.
Weather: The weather is very wild, and unpredictable in the Badlands. One moment it will be sunny, the next there will be a horrible, violent storm, and the next, everything settles, and it's back to normal. There are four seasons, which are commonly referred to as 'Bloom Season' (Spring) Sun Season, (Summer), Frost Season, (Fall) and Snow Season, (Winter). Bloom Season and Sun Season are hot, dry and dusty, and Frost Season as well as Snow Season are cold, devoid of life and prey, and brutal.
My OCs from CliffClan: None Yet
Special Fighting Techniques:
-Dust Toss: Cats will pick up a pawful of loose sand or dust, and hurl it into their enemy's eyes, momentarily blinding them.
-Cactus Ambush: A cat being chased by an enemy will lead them into one of the many patches of cactuses scattered all over the territory.
-Out of Reach: When being chased, a cat may jump onto one of the many tall, stone pillars, and create a gap between them, and the predator. Works especially well with canines, but not so well with felines.
Unique Herbs:
-Cactus Flesh: The flesh from a certain kind of Cactus can be used to treat infection, and fever and help with sore throats. Found in lusher areas of the Badlands, characterized by having small, pink flowers in the warmer seasons. (Made Up)
-Sagebrush Root: The root of young, healthy Sagebrush can be picked, dried and chewed to aid with stomach problems. In high doses, it can induce vomiting. One of the most plentiful herbs in the Badlands, characterized by its low-growing, hardy spread of branches, and flat, fragrant, silvery leaves.
-Yellow Sweet Clover: The petals and leaves from healthy Yellow Sweet Clover can be chewed into a poultice to help heal surface wounds. The taste is- ironically- bitter, which is why it's not commonly eaten. Usually found in shade, or near water, characterized by its tall stalks and sunny yellow flowers.
Religion and Beliefs: When a CliffClan cat dies, they enter The Territory of Stars. The Territory of Stars is much like StarClan and shares many similarities. The spirits that rule the afterlife are gracious and generous, welcoming to anyone who has stayed in CliffClan for any number of moons. However, if a cat is proven to be too evil and malicious to be allowed into The Territory of Stars, it will first undergo a multi-day trial that leaves no stone in their life unturned. If, even then, they are proven to be unworthy, they fade away. No afterlife, no conscious thoughts, nothing. A cat as evil as that deserves no dignity of an afterlife, in their eyes.
Special Code and Rules:
1: To lead CliffClan, the leader has to be prepared to make sacrifices. Such as giving up space in dens to warriors, not eating or drinking as much as their Clanmates in times of starvation or drought, stepping in the way of a fight to save whoever is in danger, but also knowing when to stand down. The leader is a precious and valuable position, only for the most worthy among CliffClan's ranks. The leader receives the ability to revive theirself five times after death.
2: There must be at least two Healers in the Clan at any given point.
3: Cats proven to be a danger to their Clanmates must be exiled for at least a moon.
4: CliffClan must respect their own borders, not wander too far, (It's easy to get lost) and respect the dens and territory of Wanderers.
5: Every life is equal and important, be it prey, Clan Cat, Wanderer, or Wildlife. Treat everything you come across with respect, unless it's actively trying to harm you.
6: Don't kill for the sake of killing, start conflict for the sake of starting conflict, or make useless arguments.
7: Be wary and alert; There are dozens of things in the Badlands that can seriously injure, or kill a cat. Never let your guard down completely, and be ready to flee or fight at any moment.
8: The wastage of water or food is strictly prohibited. They're so valuable to the Clan, that purposely wasting it can result in punishment.
9: Guard your Clanmates with your life, and defend them to the death. Teamwork is important, and bonds must be kept strong, and not let sour.
Clan Legends and Stories:
How CliffClan Came to Be:
Long ago, a tiny town lay, sleepy in the center of the Badlands. It was peaceful and calm, and the Twolegs there lived a simple, if not difficult life. Many kept cats for the sake of the rat and mouse problem that plagued the town, and cats were treated as very valuable. But over time, as is typical for many small towns, the town stopped growing. Its residents slowly died or moved away, occasionally leaving behind their pets, including cats. The number of feral cats grew and grew, and the number of Twolegs sank and sank until It was a Ghost Town. Many cats didn't make it long in the harsh new world, devoid of their human companions. But those who did, came back stronger. They developed powerful muscles, thick pelts and paw-pads, and fur that matched the sandy landscape. A few cats stayed in the ruins of the town, as it rotted and fell into ruin, but most eventually took flight, and started their own lives. About three years after the last Twoleg left, a cat named Sorrel took charge, and started a grow a colony. Once she had around 25 cats in total, all the way from tiny kits, to frail elders, she set out, following the muddy, shallow river until it became wider and deeper. The journey was ardurous, and extremely dangerous, and by the time they neared the end, there were only 15 cats left.
Sorrel was beginning to lose hope; She couldn't find a camp suitable for the cats she'd grown to feel responsable for, and everyone was weak and tired. Then, for a few nights in a row, Sorrel had dreams; The spirits of cats she'd once known took pity on her, and came to her, giving her messages of hope and motivation, and instructions on where to find their new home. Thankful, and confidant that she could carry her Clan to safety, they pushed through the last stretch and found a camp, perfect for all of their needs. It had a river right nearby, hunting was better than many other places they'd passed, and the camp had plenty of places for dens.
Once they were settled in, Sorrel received one final dream. They came to her, delivering her the ablitiy to revive herself five times after any kind of death. They gave her the name Sorrelstar, and instructed her on the naming ceremony of her warriors, and the code she was to follow. They gave her the chance to name her Clan, and she chose CliffClan. The spirits declared themselves as The Territory of Stars, and didn't appear to Sorrelstar again until her death, many years later. Over the years, that code changed and evolved, but the basic rules stayed. And thus, CliffClan was born.
