Author's POV
Darkness...Yadhu felt being surrounded by darkness and cold...Is this what death feels like?... he asked himself. Why was he trapped in this infinite darkness? He tried to find a source of light to escape from the cold dark surrounding that he found himself in.
"Nandhu...Nandhu..." a distant call made him turn towards the sound direction...and he saw the light suddenly somewhere at a distance.
"Nandhu...wake up...you have to live...not for you...but for someone who you destroyed unknowingly...Death isn't a punishment...it's just a temporary escape...You have to repent and redeem yourself in your lifetime...Kanika is your redemption...death isn't. I know you are not a coward, and you will rethink your decision and choose life and save yours as well as Kanika's life," a woman's apparition spoke from the source of light, making him confused.
"Who are you?" he asked, trying to reach her...but the more he tried to go closer to her, the more her apparition started to fade away. Yadhu struggled harder and started running towards the light.
"Stop..." he screamed, and then his eyes fluttered open and stared into a white ceiling, sweating profusely.
"Nandhu...Nandhu..." he heard a soft but worried sound calling out for him.
"Arju...Arju...My Nandhu opened his eyes," he caught the same voice calling out to someone excitedly, making absolutely no sense to him. Slowly he realized that he was in the ICU, and there was absolute chaos around him as Yadhu heard Arjun calmly asking someone to leave as he needed to check on him. He couldn't make out what was happening around me as he felt his head bursting in pain.
"Please, Kani...go back to your room. Don't you want Nandhu to get well soon? I will call you back after I check his vitals," Arjun was talking to someone in a calm voice, which was quite unusual of him.
"Take her to her room," Yadhu heard Shrey's stern voice ordering someone.
"No, I will stay here. You are a bad doctor. You don't know how to treat my Nandhu...I don't like you," Yadhu heard a voice sneer at Shreya, and it took him a moment to realize that it was Kanika's voice.
"Kanika...This is a patient's room, and you are delaying his treatment," Shreya almost yelled at Kanika.
"I, too, am a patient...so I can stay here with my Nandhu. Arju, tell this doctor to go out if she doesn't like me being here," Yadhu heard Kanika's baby voice as she stubbornly threw her words at Shreya.
"Shrey...Let her be here. She won't trouble anyone, "Arjun cajoled Shreya and turned towards Kanika.
"You should not talk if you want your Nandhu to get well soon," Arjun coaxed Kanika, and Yadhu didn't hear her sound after that. Moments later, he found himself drifting off to sleep as the nurse gave him a shot.
Yadhu's POV
I felt like something fluffy was on my chest as I slowly came back to my senses. I opened my eyes, trying to adjust them to the light source in the room. A pain shot through my body, and memories seeped into my brain, making me restless.
Soon the mist that covered my eyes cleared, and I was fully conscious. My throat burned in need of some water, and my eyes wandered the room, stopping its path at Arjun and Shreya. Arjun looked at me with kindness and care while Shreya looked like she was ready to burst out at me.
"W-Water..."I almost croaked, looking helplessly at Arjun.
"Nandhu...You are awake," I heard a shriek near me, and soon I was wrapped by delicate arms, which made me realize someone was lying beside me.
"Kani, he is awake now...don't disturb him...Let me check him, "I heard Arjun's voice persuading Kanika, who had by now been holding me tightly.
"Does it hurt now, Nandhu?" Kanika asked, caressing my wrists which made the guilt deep inside me resurface to the fullest slowly. I looked at her, not knowing what to tell her. By the time, Arjun adjusted the bed and brought it to the sitting position with Kanika still clinging to me.
"Here...drink this," Arjun made me drink a cup of water, making my dry throat rehydrate.
"How are you feeling now? "He asked softly.
"I-I'm ok," I replied in discomfort, realizing that Arjun and Shreya would have by now realized that I was a vile man not fit to be their friend.
"Arju...Take this girl out now. I have to talk to Dr.Yadhunandhan ...in private," Shreya's rigid voice boomed impatiently, making me squirm in shame. She addressed me with my full name. That means she hates me ...my heart gripped in pain seeing her emotionless face.
"No...You go out. Nandhu is my friend...I will take care of him, "Kanika unwrapped her hands from around me and sat on the bed glaring at Shreya. Shreya glared back at her with equal intensity clenching her fists. It was evident from her actions that she was trying to control her emotions.
"Kani...Your Nandhu just woke up. Look at him...doesn't he look hungry?" Arjun told Kanika softly.
"He -He is hungry?... But where will we get chocolates for him?" she asked innocently to Arjun.
"No chocolates...but we should give him food if you want him to heal soon," Arjun told Kanika again, making her look at him in confusion.
"What are you waiting for? Let's go home and bring some food for Nandhu?" Arjun said to Kanika.
The moment she heard Arjun's words, Kanika excitedly stood up and pecked my forehead, squealing happily, "Nandhu...Arju and I will bring food for you. Take rest."
Arjun successfully took a happy Kanika out, leaving me with Shreya, who was looking at me angrily.
"S-Shrey...How long was I out? "I asked, looking at Shreya expectantly, but I felt my left cheek stinging in pain.
"It's Dr.Shreya Arjun for you, and dare you to call me Shrey again," she retorted angrily.
"Shrey...I know you hate me now because I'm an abuser, a criminal who destroyed an innocent girl's life...Why did you save me after learning this truth of mine? I don't deserve to live, "tears streamed down my eyes as I poured my heart out to her.
"Shut Up ...Yadhu...Just fucking shut up. You are right...I hate you...but not for the reasons you just stated...I hate you for trying to take your life...You are a freaking doctor, and you know better than anyone that every life is precious. And what do you think? All problems will end with your death? "she sneered.
"I-I..."I stuttered, not knowing how to answer her.
"Tell me, Yadhu...Will your death solve all the problems that you created? Just tell me what will become of Kanika's life after you are dead. Don't tell me the crap that you transferred your entire property and bank balance in her name. That girl doesn't know what money is or what property is. She knows nothing beyond chocolates. If someone gives her chocolates and asks her to give her thumb impression on those property papers, she will happily do so without a thought," Shreya stated angrily.
"Seriously, Yadhu...You thought that giving her some property is enough to save her life? "She nodded her head in disappointment.
"S-Shrey...I-I wanted her to live a comfortable life. I know I'm a sinner, and I wanted to give her justice by m-my death. But trust me, Shreya, if I knew that she was innocent, I wouldn't have touched her. I couldn't bring myself to look at myself without guilt and regret," I cried, reminiscing what happened between Kanika and me.
"Yadhu...I know you are guilty, and the most important thing is you realize the depth of your sin. But before entirely blaming yourself, just imagine that instead of you, someone else was in your place that eventful day. Kanika was already in that vile man's clutches, and she was drugged. I am one hundred percent sure that if it were someone else in your place, he would have not even bothered to help Kanika, neither would he have taken the responsibility of the deed. Circumstances became the villain in both of your lives. I'm not saying what you did is correct, nor am I supporting your crime. Your drinking habit brought you where you are right now," she said harshly.
"I-I'm ashamed of me...that's why I..."I paused, unable to look at her eyes.
"That's why you tried to take your life..." she completed for me.
"Your death will not give her justice, Yadhu...but your life can.", she replied.
"W-What are you saying, Shrey?" I looked at her in shock. "How can a low life like me give her justice by living?"
"By taking care of her for your entire life. Can you do that to redeem yourself? Can you dedicate your life to looking after Kanika instead of cribbing about your guilt and regret? And also, can you stop drinking? Are you ready to do that?" she questioned.
"Shrey...I am her culprit...I ...how can I be in her life..."
"That innocent girl thinks of you as your best friend. She even fought with me the entire time to just be with you from the moment she opened her eyes. Do you still think that girl will be able to give a statement against you in court? You tried to end your life just to escape humiliation...But what about her? She doesn't know what happened to her, nor does she know the pain and humiliation she would have suffered had she been normal. You are not my Yadhu...I only see a selfish coward who only thinks of his pain, guilt, and humiliation. You said you wanted redemption...then work your way towards redemption, "Shreya declared.
"Shrey...Trust me ...if it is possible, I will surrender my life at her feet. But I am not worthy of that. So what do you say that I should do to redeem myself? "I asked her as tears clouded my eyes.
"Marry her," she answered nonchalantly, making a shiver go down my spine.
