The Fall-English Standard Version 2016

Verses 1-7

Now the serpent was craftier than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'? And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch t, lest you die." But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." So, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

My thoughts: I just don't understand why God would place the serpent in the garden in the first place. If he is all knowing.

Verses 8-13

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called the man and said to him, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked. and I hid myself." He said, "Who told that you were naked?" Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The Serpent deceived me, and I ate."

My thoughts: Neither the man or the woman really understand what is right or wrong so honestly it shouldn't have been their fault that they were deceived. As God gives out his punishments, I don't think it's fair that either Adam or Eve gets punished. The one and only that should be punished is the Serpent because he willingly deceived them. (But honestly what the serpent said was the truth. God didn't want that).  This story doesn't show God as loving or compassionate or merciful. Not to me.

Verses 14 and 15

The LORD God said to the serpent.

"Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring: he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heal."

I like what these guys had to say. They don't believe the serpent was Satan. They think it was just a snake that was being control by Satan. That is very interesting too and therefore with that idea it wasn't the snake's fault either. There is also a creation museum in Kentucky. I would like to go to that, but Bible history doesn't always mean history because it doesn't always fit nicely with the history we learn in school.  I also like how they talk about saying die once and saying die twice. Saying it ones means instant while saying it twice means eventually.

Verse 16 To the woman he said,

https://youtu.be/h_zIJt0Kpes

I will surely multiply your *pain in childbearing;

*Itzavon: A rare word that appears in the Book of Genesis to describe the pain of Adam and Eve. Watch the video above to understand the "True" meaning of the word "pain" in this context.

in pain you shall bring forth children.

Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,

but he shall rule over you."

My thoughts: I like how he talked about this passage. This is the only translation that uses the word "contrary."  It's actually part of the curse for the man to rue over the woman. It doesn't have to be a husband. It can be any man that would take advantage. According to him this isn't godly, and we should go against the curse.

Verses 17, 18, and 19 And to Adam he said,

https://youtu.be/FR_XM1691hs

"Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you and you shall eat the plants of the field.

By the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

My thoughts: According to the first video I have about Adam's punishment, Adam was the first Adam and then Jesus will be the second Adam. This guy say that God isn't fair, he's gracious. The way he explained it is being "gracious" is being forgiving when we don't deserve it because we "sin all the time." So, Adam's sin is irrelevant to us now.  Personally, I don't agree with the mentally that we don't deserve forgiveness because I feel that it'll cause mental health issues and low self-esteem. According to the second video there are two groups of people. The Adam or the Christ. The Adam's path leads to judgement, which results in condemnation. The path of Christ leads to justification. God saves us in order for us to reign in life, that's it, to live life in spiritual victory rather than spiritual destruction.  I understand that now but since this is the Old Testament which is the Jewish Bible (The Torah), Jewish people don't believe that Jesus was the Messiah. They are still waiting for theirs, so I think this is just a different perspective. I am not going to say who is right and who is wrong because these groups of people have their own believes. Plus, in Christianity there are many denominations, so I don't like saying which one is the rue denomination because they all have their own perspectives. I just want to understand more about these stories and figure out what I believe in and what I agree with. I try to keep an open mind, and I do consider myself a spiritual person.

In the third video it is believe that actually Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve was claimed to be the one who have written the text about his parents. (To me that would make more sense than Moses written all five of the first books. Moses was alive yet during Geneses.  This was translated by King Solomon. Like how we learned about Lilith in the Quran, we would also learn about Satan before he became a fallen angel. I enjoy learning about the background of these characters as I am diving into these stories.

There is a longer version of Adam and Eve in the Latin and the Greek versions. I find that very interesting.

Verses 20 and 21

The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothes them.

My thoughts: Now Eve has a name.

Verses 22, 23, and 24

Then the LORD God said,

"Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat and live forever--" therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
